38th Annual

Shawano Folk Music Festival

In MemoriumThis year’s Festival

is dedicated to the

memory of Joyous Bowen. Joyous was

involved in the arts

in Shawano for lon-

ger than most of us

can remember. She

worked for 37 years to bring the

Shawano Folk Music Festival to life

(one of only two volunteers who

could claim that record). She sang,

danced and rode her motorcycle

cross country whenever she could.

In her 90’s she bought a mountain

dulcimer and learned to play it. We

lost Joyous last September, and we

will miss her.

We also say goodbye to JamesDurst, singer, songwriter, social ac-tivist who sang at the First Year of the Shawano Folk Music Festival in 1979.

We’ve all lost other friends and family.

This weekend, sing for all of them.

Pond View Glen, UnpluggedThis year, we’re not wiring the Pond View Glen stage for sound. It’s the way

we used to do it years ago, and it’s still a good idea. Pond View Glen is a

small, intimate space, perfect for things that want a quieter sound. It’s the

room sound, the sing-in-the-car sound. It’s folk music. It’s unplugged.

“We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams.”

minded Michiganders – Michael Beauchamp and Laurel

revivalist fervor with the playful creativity of starting

from scratch. Whether rendering a traditional tune or

one of their many original com-

positions, the duo infuses each

Tom PeaseTom Pease is familiar to most children in Wisconsin

– and to anyone who’s been a child or lived with one. His

performances for children and families are energetic, a

little wacky, and totally un-

forgettable. Full of laughter,

movement and music, we all

sing and dance along with

him, following his lead as

we wave our arms and make

funny faces. His concerts are

also full of respect for his au-

dience, fellow musicians, the

environment and the music

itself. Tom comes from Am-

herst, WI. This is his 18th ap-

pearance at this festival and

we’re happy he’s back. More
