    Application Note

    1. Connect a type K mini-connector into the TC inputo the DPC and connect tothe thermocouple input othe transmitter (Figure 1). Itis necessary that you use thecorrect type o mini-connec-

tor or this connection to theDPC.2. Connect the center two ter-

minals o the DPC to the con-nections on the transmitterwhere loop power is applied(Figure 1).

Note: I you preer to use houseloop power rather than supplyingloop power rom the DPC, connectthese two leads in series with theloop supply to the transmitter.

    3. Once your connections aremade, starting rom the DPCpower up state (or measurescreen), select the mA but-ton to measure milliamps(Figure 2).

    Figure 1.

Calibrating a 2 Wire ThermocoupleTransmitter with the Fluke 750 SeriesDocumenting Process Calibrators

The transmitter in this example is a 2 wire trans-mitter (needs loop power). The input stimulus orthis device is rom a type K thermocouple with aninput range o 100 C to 300 C at 0 % and 100 %.The output drawn against loop power is 4-20 mAat 0 % and 100 % with a tolerance o 0.25 %. Thesteps below show how to: 1) perorm a three point

ascending (3) As Found (pre-adjustment) test at0-50-100 %, and Tag the results, 2) adjust thezero and span (span = 100 %) o the transmitter, then 3) perorm a three point ascending As Let(post-adjustment) test at 0-50-100 %, Tag thoseresults and review them in memory.

The precision sourcing and measurementcapabilities o the rugged Fluke DocumentingProcess Calibrator (DPC) make it an ideal choiceor the calibration o process instrumentation. The ollowing examples show how to address trans-mitter calibrations quickly and eectively using theFluke 753 or 754 Documenting Process Calibrators.

    9. Once the DPC has completedthis evaluation, it will displaythe post test summary screen

with the SOURCE, MEASUREand ERROR columns. Failuresin the error column will bein reverse video (Figure 8).Depress Done.

    11. At this point, select Adjustand the DPC will source 0 %and measure or 4 mA to

0.25 %. As long as the errorexceeds .25 % the error win-dow in the measure hal othe screen will be in reversevideo. Adjust the zero on thetransmitter until the error isless than 0.25 %. Next, selectGo to 100 % and adjust thetransmitter span in the sameway. You may also Go to50 % to check linearity atmid-span.

    12. Ater adjustment is complete, select As Let, Done andAutotest. Watch the 0-50-100 % evaluations. I theadjustment was successul, all the errors in the post runsummary should be in normal

    1. Make the RTD sourceconnections, S1, S2, S3 andS4 (omit S3 and S4 or 2 wireRTDs and S4 or 3 wire RTDs;

S4 is only needed or 4 wireRTD sourcing).

    2. Next, connect the loop powerand current measurementconnections, C1 and C2.

    3. Once the connections aremade as per the diagram inFigure 11, enable the loop24 volt power rom the setup

screen, source the pertinentRTD or the speciic transmit-ter being evaluated, and setthe measure mode to mA.

    Figure 11.

3 and 4 Wire RTD Sourcing for the Fluke 750 SeriesDocumenting Process CalibratorsOne o the most requently asked application questions pertaining to

the 750 Series Documenting Process Calibrators is, How do I hookup the test leads to the DPC to source 3 and 4 wire RTDs? For 3 and4 wire RTD measurement, the DPC has embedded hookup diagramsthat easily show you how to connect the DPC. However, or 3 and 4wire RTD source, the DPC does not oer that assistance.

The example shown below (Figure 11) depicts the hookup or a 3and 4 wire Rosemount 444 RTD Transmitter. You will need an addi-tional pair o TL22 test leads and AC20 industrial test clips to completeall the connections necessary or this application. In order to doublethe available connections to the source terminals on the DPC, you alsowill need to utilize the short black jumpers supplied with the Docu-menting Process Calibrator.

Calibration of an I to P (Current toPressure) with the Fluke 750 SeriesDocumenting Process Calibrators

A common device in the Fluke DPC workloadis the I to P. The I to P device is used to con-vert electrical loop analog control o 4-20 mAto pneumatic analog loop control o 3-15 PSI.

    The device in this example is an I to P withcurrent input values o 4-20 mA or 0 % and100 % with output range o 3-15 PSI or 0 %and 100 %, +/- 2 %. This step-by-step exam-ple describes how to: 1) perorm a three pointascending (3) As Found (pre-adjustment) testat 0-50-100 %, Tag the results, 2) Adjust thezero and span (span = 100 %) o the I to P,then 3) perorm a three point ascending AsLet (post-adjustment) test at 0-50-100 %, Tagthose results and review them in memory.

Since you want to source acurrent, depress mA. DepressENTER which chooses SourcemA when given the choice oSource mA or Simulate Trans-mitter. When the DPC respondswith ????? asking or a current tosource, depress 4 and ENTER.

    5. Next depress the MEAS/

SOURCE button once and youshould be in the split screenmode (Figure 15).

    1. Connect the pressure moduleto the DPC. Connect the inputo the P to I and the outputo a pressure hand pumpto the input o the pressuremodule using a T connector(Figure 20). I you are using adierential pressure module, ensure (or this example) it isa 15 PSI module and connectto input labeled H.

Calibration of a Pressure Transmitter(Pressure to Current or P to I) withthe Fluke 750 Series DocumentingProcess Calibrators

A common device in the Fluke DPC work-load is the pressure transmitter or P to Idevice. The P to I device is used to convertpneumatic analog loop control signals o3-15 PSI or other measured pressures toelectrical loop analog control signals o

4-20 mA. The device in this example is aP to I with pressure input values o 3-15PSI or 0 % and 100 % with output range(drawn rom loop power) o4-20 mA or 0 % and 100 %, +/- 2 %.In this step-by-step example we will:1) perorm a three point ascending (3)As Found (pre-adjustment) test at 0-50-100 %, and Tag the results, 2) adjust thezero and span (100 %) o the P to I, then3) perorm a three point ascending As Let(post-adjustment) test at 0-50-100 %, tagthose results and review them in memory.

At that point using the handpump, pump until the DPCdisplay is reasonably closeto 3 PSI and depress AcceptPoint. Now the DPC shoulddisplay Go to 9 PSI. Again, using the hand pump, pumpup reasonably close to 9 PSIand depress Accept Point. When the DPC responds withGo to 15 PSI pump to that

value and Accept Point. It is important to understanda key eature o the DPC atthis point. When the erroris being calculated on themeasured mA by the DPC,it will make the calculationbased on the deviation othe amount o pressure beingsourced. What this means is,

i you are sourcing 3.120 PSI(1% o span above nominal),the DPC will look or a mAreading o 4.160 mA (also 1%o span above nominal). Inorder to make a proper evalu-ation o the device you needonly to get reasonably closeto the nominal pressure val-ues with the hand pump. Theremaining source pressureerror is compensated or bythe DPC during mA measurecalculations.

    10. Once the DPC has completedthis evaluation, it will displaythe post test summary screenwith the SOURCE, MEASURE
