Washington 2004 - 2005
Information on the 2004 - 2005 program year current as of April 29, 2005
AmeriCorps: This year AmeriCorps will provide more than 2,300 individuals the opportunity toprovide intensive, results-driven service to meet education, environmental, public safety and otherpressing needs in communities across Washington. Roughly three-quarters of all AmeriCorps grantfunding goes to the Governor-appointed Washington Commission for National and Community Service, which in turn awards grants to nonprofit groups to respond to local needs. Most of the remainder of thegrant funding is distributed by the Corporation directly to multi-state and national organizations through acompetitive grants process. Other individuals will serve through AmeriCorps*VISTA, whose membershelp bring individuals and communities out of poverty by serving full-time to fight illiteracy, improvehealth services, create businesses and increase housing opportunities, and AmeriCorps*NCCC (NationalCivilian Community Corps), a 10-month, full time residential program for men and women between theages of 18 and 24. In exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members earn an education award of upto $4,725 that can be used to pay for college or to pay back qualified student loans. Since 1994, morethan 12,000 Washington residents have qualified for Americorps Education Awards totaling more than$46,600,000.
Learn and Serve America: Learn and Serve America provides grants to schools, colleges, and nonprofit groups to support efforts to engage more than 12,000 Washington students in communityservice linked to academic achievement and the development of civic skills. This type of learning, calledservice learning, improves communities while preparing young people for a lifetime of responsiblecitizenship. In addition to providing grants, Learn and Serve America serves as a resource on serviceand service-learning to teachers, faculty members, schools, and community groups.
Meeting community needs in Washington. More than 32,000 people of all ages and backgrounds arehelping to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and increase civic engagement through 150 national service projectsacross Washington. Serving with national and local nonprofits, schools, faith-based organizations and other groups, thesecitizens tutor and mentor children, coordinate after-school programs, build homes, conduct neighborhood patrols, restorethe environment, respond to disasters, build nonprofit capacity and recruit and manage volunteers. This year, theCorporation for National and Community Service will commit more than $33,700,000 to support Washingtoncommunities through three national service initiatives:
Senior Corps: More than 18,000 seniors in Washington contribute their time and talents in one ofthree Senior Corps programs. Foster Grandparents serve one-on-one as tutors and mentors to more than 5,300 young people who have special needs. Senior Companions help more than 1,500 homeboundseniors and other adults maintain independence in their own homes. Retired and Senior VolunteerProgram (RSVP) volunteers conduct safety patrols for local police departments, participate inenvironmental projects, tutor and mentor youth, respond to natural disasters, and provide other servicesthrough more than 1,800 groups across Washington.
Together with the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation for National and Community Service is working to build aculture of citizenship, service, and responsibility in America.
