Embryonic stem cells (ESC) have been in the news

since 1998 when stem cells obtained from a human

embryo were first successfully grown in vitro. And as

ESC were shown to have the ability of becoming virtually any

cell type of the body, this achievement inspired many promis-

es and raised much expectation. Could injection of ESC lead

to improvements in various degenerative diseases? Would it bepossible to grow organs invitro for the purpose oftransplant? Could wemanipulate the geneticmaterial of embryonic stemcells in order to repair faultygenes in an organ?

But as ESC were fuelingmuch hope, research withESC became rapidlyencumbered by serious eth-ical considerations. First,the source of human ESChas to be human embryos.The idea of growing humanembryos with the intent ofdismembering them after a week or so inorder to grow ESC is obviously question-able. Second and more worrisome is the factthat culturing human ESC could open thedoor to human cloning in order to grow actu-al organs. But aside from these ethicalissues, the main issue is that in spite of all

the promises of ESCresearch, nearly 10 years ofresearch have delivered lit-tle in term of successful andsafe ESC-based ther-apeutic approach.

But, while much ofthe world focused ondevelopments inESC research, anoth-er breakthrough dis-covery was beingmade by numerousscientific teamsthroughout theworld. Adult stem

cells (ASC), the stem cells presentin the body after birth, were alsoshown to have the ability of becom-ing virtually any cell type of the body.ASC placed on brain, liver or mus-cle tissue will rapidly become brain,liver and muscle cells. At first, because

ADULT STEM CELLSASC are difficult to grow in vitro, manybelieved that they had little potential, buta series of in vivo studies rapidly estab-lished that ASC have enormous potentialin the body.

This discovery then spurred the conceptthat adult stem cells, having the ability ofbecoming any cell type of the body, mightconstitute the natural renewal system ofthe body. Studies using various novel sci-entific tools like Green Fluorescent Protein,which allows visual tracking of stem cellsin the body, showed that when an organ ischallenged it causes the release of com-pounds known to trigger stem cells releasefrom the bone marrow. The organ thenreleases compounds known to attract stemcells, and the released stem cells travel tothat organ. As they reach the organ in need,the stem cells migrate in the organ, prolif-erate and become cells of that organ, pro-moting tissue renewal.

This process takes place everyday of our lives,and constitutes the natural innate renewalsystem of the body. As stem cells travel inthe body, they participate to maintainingoptimal health throughout the body.

Alittle over two decadesago, a new herbal supple-ment named Aphanizomenonflos-aquae (AFA), an aquat-ic botanical, made its appear-

ance on the marketplace. Rapidly, AFAbecame popular for the wide variety ofhealth benefits reported by consumers. Overthe years we identified the presence in AFAof various bioactive compounds such asphycocyanin, a strong natural anti-inflam-matory compound, a polysaccharide sup-porting immune function, andphenylethylamine (PEA), a molecule knownas “the molecule of love,” which increasesmental clarity and provides a sense of well-being. Nevertheless, in spite of the identi-fication of these various components, manyhealth benefits reported by con-sumers remained unexplained.

At the turn of the 21st century, databegan appearing in the scientificliterature describing the potentialof embryonic stem cells (ESC).ESC were shown to have the abil-ity to become any kind of cells inthe body. Soon after, studiesrevealed that adult stem cells (ASC)also had the ability of becoming vir-tually any kind of cells in the body.When this discovery was made,we hypothesized that ASC con-stituted the natural renewal sys-tem of the body, and we publishedthis hypothesis in the journal, MedicalHypotheses (October 2002). Our idea at thetime was this: if ASC indeed constitutedthe natural renewal system of the body,with ASC being able to become any cell typeof the body, then supporting this processcould lead to a wide variety of health ben-efits. Given the broad spectrum of benefits

reported by AFA consumers, we simplyhypothesized that AFA was supportingaspects of stem cell physiology.

With this idea in mind, we initiated a seriesof laboratory experiments and soon dis-covered that consumption of large quanti-ty of AFA (greater than 5 grams) increasedthe number of circulating stem cells by upto 30%. As we pursued our investigation toidentify the compound in AFA responsi-ble for this effect, we actually identifiedtwo specific compounds supporting both therelease of stem cells from the bone marrowand their migration out of the blood intotissues. We then proceeded to concentratethese compounds out of AFA, achieving 5:1concentrates for both compounds, and

dred signed up before the pre-launch conference, and isapproaching 2000 distributors in his organization now. A vet-eran of both the good and bad in direct sales, Phyl had workeda HVAC job, but “I was always talking to people on the jobabout the money I was making in network marketing. My bosssaid, ‘Either you need to do that fulltime or stop talking aboutit on the job.’ So I quit. That was three years ago.”

It wasn’t always easy after that big step. “My wife and I andour three kids lived in a trailer,” he says. “But StemTech hasbeen very good to us… We just moved into a three-bedroom,two-bath house with roses all around. I like to call it ‘The housethat StemTech Built.’” And Phyl has some big goals: “Nowthat we’re in this house, I plan to buy a second one, and rentthis one out. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Marijke Longcame to the United States in her 20’s. With a degreein architecture, Marijke was well positioned for a

Incorporated.” These long-time friends and past network mar-keting partners give whole new meaning to “Fast Start”: Theysigned up fourteen personallysponsored distributors and a totalof 23 distributors in 24 hours.How did they do it?

“Phyl Franklin called me andasked me if I’d heard about stemcells, and would I listen to an 8-minute call. Network marketing is bigbusiness all over the world.Here in North America, a per-son interested in direct selling

has thousands of choices ofcompanies, product linesand sales methods. Even ifyou decide that you want abusiness that can improvethe lives of your customersand yourself, you still havethousands of network mar-keting organizations tochoose from.

You could choose a com-pany that sells cleaning products. You rea-son that everybody needs them, perhapsthe company’s been around for years, andyou might be able to make a living.

Janet says she was “born into theentrepreneurial spirit”: In 1954, her par-ents packed up the kids and moved from

Michigan to California, where they took overa bankrupt mushroom farm, turned itaround, and made it a great success over thenext 30 years. “I’ve always dabbled in net-work marketing,” Janet says, pointing outthat she has always been looking for “theright company, where I can make an out-standing residual income, have fun, andmake a difference in the lives of others.”

She continues, “StemTech is that com-pany. This is the easiest business I’ve everdone. Never before have I had people say,‘Thank you so much for telling me aboutthis product!’” Janet, a former teacher, saysshe’s been a student of nutrition “forever,”and has always been drawn to alternativesto traditional healthcare.

She and her husband David both lovehelping people, so StemTech is ideal forthem. While Janet does the “work” of build-ing the business, David always supportsher every effort. When they are not focus-ing on business building, the Vettes enjoyhosting dinner parties where they serve“healthy and yummy meals,” includinghomemade muffins and breads that start offwith flour that Janet grinds herself. Andwhen she gets away from the phone that isthe center of her StemTech communica-tion system, Janet loves to send old-fash-ioned hand-written letters to family andfriends.

When Ron Koerner went to thePre-Launch last fall, he was stilla little skeptical about the whole

stem cell thing. But he had been friends withRay Leonard, “a venture capitalist whodoesn’t do things unless they’re worth it,”and Ray had said that StemTech was thereal deal. At the Pre-Launch Ron heardChristian Drapeau and Ray Carter speak,and he knew that Ray Leonard was righton the money. He enrolled FastStart, andheaded home with six bottles ofStemEnhance.

Ron’s stepfather was definitely not enjoy-ing the greatest quality of life. Brianne was promoted to District ServiceManager, with responsibility for oversee-ing six health clubs in the Greater LosAngeles area. Her district was ranked firstin the State of California among over 40 loca-tions. She then “found her true calling” andbecame the Customer Service Manager foran LA-based direct selling company thatmarketed consumer health care products.In this position, she hired and trained allcustomer service representatives and han-dled distributor inquiries. Intrigued by theopportunity to participate in the start-up ofa new, dynamic company, she relocated toPhoenix, where she assisted in the creationof a direct selling venture, selecting vendorsand software systems while managing cus-tomer service and data entry.
