At first blush, one would not think there would be such a high level of quality, diving into more than 500 images and narrowing down the field to 67 choices for a show [some artists were removed from the exhibit after initial selections - vaa], but there was. Out of 135 entrants there were 134 good ones at least, but the selection process is what it is. In order to present good examples from such a wide spectrum of different media in a diverse group exhibition, without bias regarding materials and technique, some very good artists were indeed not included in this offering. My apologies. So to the artists, please feel free to hang the juror in effigy, I’ll pose for the picture or statuary as it may be, free of charge.

Some artists have more than one work in the show. This was done not so much because these pieces were my favorites, but more conclusively, that the works appeared to be created in succession, and needed several examples to communicate the artist’s intention. I believe this contributes to the viewer’s enjoyment of the exhibition as a whole, and art shows were meant to be enjoyed. Also I might add, I did have a couple of favorites.

All works were chosen for the show based on facility, integrity, and originality. While craft alone would not be enough to win the day, without the facility to communicate the mind and heart in a manner others would be moved to dwell on, the voice of the artist will not be considered much less heard. When the artist takes the longer journey to expression it shows, and draws the patron into a unique awareness of the artists’ making.

It is equally inadequate just to be original. Every mother’s child is an original. The integrity to purposely decide to draw, or not to draw, to render a meaningful line, or to leave out what is not needed, with brevity and courage, is a powerful thing. With nothing to prove to anyone, the well-considered artists stand before their work and see a reflection so unique it becomes a fingerprint of his or her soul. When this happens, an undeniable originality emerges and the artwork and the artist have integrity.

The realization by the artist of that emergence results in the one-of-a-kind originality not arrived at while considering current trends or emulation. Artists of all disciplines find success when they recognize comprehend, and become fully self aware of their unique essence. The best ones will know it, and recognize it when it happens.

“Third Monday” Critique Nights

Art Supply on Main2711 Main Street

Houston, Texas 770026:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join VAA on the Third Monday of every month for our critique sessions at Art Supply on Main. VAA critiques are opportunities for artists to share their work with other artists. These are peer cri-tiques in which everyone is invited to show work and discuss the work of others. You don’t have to bring work in order to show up. Work can be in any medium and artists may bring 1 to 10 pieces. Participants will be allowed as much time as possible depending on how many people are showing work. Artists are encouraged to bring current pieces/projects they wish to discuss with others and get feedback on concept, technique, presentation, etc. Drinks and snacks are provided (feel free to bring and share, too). VAA members and non-members are welcome to come. There is no fee.
