EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT:

Our thanks to all who attended the Live Recording Session at Rose Lehrman ArtsCenter at HACC on June 15th - the event and the recording were very successful. Wehad over 160 people attend and they made a very inspiring audience for Jonathan & me.The resulting CD will be out this fall.

We had a great time at the Harrisburg Arts Fest this year - thanks to all who came by andplayed - the music was great and we made a lot of new jazz friends that weekend!

If you would like to volunteer some time at future CPFJ events, please contact ourvolunteer coordinator, Leslie Beamer, at [email protected] or (717) 790-9672. .Ifyou are interested in helping to underwriting any CPFJ events, please contact the officeat your convenience.

The Brubeck Tribute Concert will now be part of our 2013 Fall Concert Series and willbe held on Saturday, September 25th at the new Pollock Center for the Arts in CampHill, PA. Updated information is in this issue and tickets are available on our web site inThe ViBE. We thank Tom & Donna Weik for funding this great event which will featureCyrus Chestnut's Trio and young alto sax star Sharel Cassity. A full evening of Brubeck'smusic and rare video footage of the original Brubeck Quartet will be presented. We willhave a V.I.P. Meet the Artist reception following the performance. If you are a sponsormember of CPFJ this event will be included in your Fall Series tickets - please be sure torenew in time to get your tickets!.

Our annual Jazz Camp, June 19-21 at Messiah College was the best yet - 67 studentsattending and a very inspired final performance in the splendid High Center. Ourthanks to Chuck Rhodes & ABC-27 for covering the Camp in his newssegment. Chuck even sat in on drums with the Camp Faculty band and got a standingovation from the students. The video clip is available for viewing at ABC-27's web site.

Please review the concert/club pages in this issue and get out often to support theestablishments that are hosting jazz and support our talented area jazz musicians.

We are seeking new Board Members for CPFJ - if you have an interest in serving, contact the CPFJ office - 717-540-1010. We also need active committee members for ourMembership, Youth & Marketing committees.

Thanks to all for helping to keep CPFJ moving forward!

CPFJ proudly announces a special concert in tribute to the memory of one of America's jazz icons - DaveBrubeck. The pianist and composer who helped make jazz popular again in the 1950s and ’60s withrecordings like “Time Out,” the first jazz album to sell a million copies, and “Take Five,” the still instantlyrecognizable hit single that was that album’s centerpiece, died in December, 2012, one day before his 92ndbirthday. In his long career he became best known for his famous Quartet that featured drummer JoeMorello, bassist Eugene Wright, and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond.

CPFJ is thrilled to have our featured performer Cyrus Chestnut arranging a full evening of Brubeck's musicfor his Trio & he will bring special guest alto saxophonist Sharel Cassity to help relive the original BrubeckQuartet sound. Video segments of the original Brubeck Quartet will also be shown.

Cyrus began his musical career at the age of six, playing in church in Baltimore, MD. While in Maryland he studied at the PeabodyConservatory and went to Boston to get his degree in Composition from Berklee College of Music. He has since been a majorforce on the internationa jazz scene having toured and performed with a wide range or artists including Bette Midler, FreddieHubbard, Chick Corea, Isaac Hayes, Dizzy Gillespie, Betty Carter & opera star Kathleen Battle.

We are also excited to host this performance in the new Grace Milliman Pollock Performing Arts Center - 340 North 21st Street,Camp Hill, PA 17011 - a facility that is part of the Camp Hill School district conveniently located just off the Hwy 15 Bypass.

Tom Weik, a long time CPFJ Corporate Member, suggested having this event and is underwriting the concert in memory of hisfather, Wilbur Z. Weik, who introduced Tom to jazz when he was a boy.

We will host a V.I.P. Meet the Artist reception following the concert - tickets are available from our web site -www.friendsofjazz.org or by phone 717-540-1010.

. Jazz violinist Christian Howes grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where he studied classically from the age offive, performing as a soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at age 16 and later receiving his bachelor's degree inPhilosophy from the Ohio State University. At age twenty, a “cultural intervention” occurred when Christian had the opportunityto perform at regular gospel church services and it became his mission to become a violinist with a strong voice in jazz. Since his shift 21years ago, he has gained great notoriety from critics and players alike as one of the world's most respected jazz violinists. Christian was afavorite of the late guitar legend Les Paul, with whom he worked for 11 years. An in-demand violinist on the New York scene, He collaborateswith a bevy of top shelf jazz artists, including Greg Osby, Dafnis Prieto, Dave Samuels, Spyro Gyra, and a 4-year chair in BillEvans' “Soulgrass” band. In 2013, he was voted among the top three violinists in ' 2012 Expanded Critics Poll. In August 2011,Christian was ranked as the #1 “Rising Star” violinist in the Downbeat Critics Poll and was a nominee for the Jazz Journalists Association's“Violinist Of The Year” in 2011. In 2012, he received the Residency Partnership from Chamber Music America for his work in outreach withorchestral He regularly tours throughout Asia, Europe, and the U.S. as a leader of his own groups and a soloist withorchestras. FREDDY COLE QUARTETOn at IN The CPFJ is proud to welcome T ,featuring piano/vocals, bass, drums, guitar. Living jazz legendLionel Frederick Cole was born in 1931, the youngest of Edward and Paulina Nancy Cole’s five children. His three elderbrothers - Eddie, Ike and Nat (twelve years Freddy’s senior) - were all musicians. Freddy began playing and singing inChicago clubs as a teenager. Although he was ready to hit the road at 18, his mother intervened and he continued hismusical education at the Roosevelt Institute in Chicago. Freddy moved to New York in 1951, where he studied at Julliard and found himselfprofoundly influenced by John Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. It was back in New York that Freddy successfully laid the groundworkfor a career that continues to flourish to this day. He developed a vast repertoire of songs in Manhattan bistros and concurrently began tosupplement his live performances with television and radio commercial jingle work. Freddy recorded several albums for European and Englishcompanies during the 1970s that helped him develop a loyal overseas following. He developed a stand-up act, a better rapport with audiences, and learned to sing in other languages. He plays piano and sings and performs live with guitar, drums and upright bass. He has emerged fromthe awesome shadow cast by his elder brother, Nat King Cole. In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday thanthat of his brother and his timing swings a little more. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable, and articulate – are among the most respected injazz. Cole’s career continues to ascend as he has moved into the front ranks of America’s homegrown art form with a style and musical

On Wednesday morning, June 19, a band of 67 hopeful young jazz musicians from Central Pennsylvania and beyondgathered at Messiah College for the 2013 CPFJ Jazz Camp. Attendees ranged in age from eight years old to twenty-one.After checking into their dorm rooms and meeting roommates, the campers were introduced to the Camp faculty, led byCyrus Chestnut. Each camper was evaluated to determine his or her level of experience and was assigned to a group ledby one faculty member. For the next two days, campers participated in Master Classes, individual instrument tutoring, improvisation and nightly jam sessions. On Thursday, area TV personality Chuck Rhodes brought a camera crew todocument the camp on his "Out & About" news segment. He interviewed many students and faculty and ended up sittingin with the faculty band - for those who aren't aware, Chuck's an experienced musician as well as our area's long timefavorite weather guy. The footage can be viewed

The Camp culminated on Friday evening in a final concert at the beautiful new Parmer Hall in the High Center for Worshipand Performing Arts. Each group performed a number which included solos by all participants. It was clear that parents, grandparents and members of the public were amazed and delighted with the level of talent on display that evening. Oneparent wrote that, "As parents, the final concert was a joy to experience! It was so wonderful to see each student have sucha passion for not only playing, but performing as well. " To close the evening and the Camp, the faculty performed twoamazing numbers.

This Jazz Camp was groundbreaking in the number of campers (67) and the breathtaking new facility at Messiah College.Campers were reluctant to leave...many suggested that next year's Camp be longer. Our deepest thanks to Ben Olewine,Kristen Olewine Milke and the Olewine Family Trust for underwriting the Camp again this year. We are also grateful for thegenerous scholarship funding provided by Rosemary Barrett, The Hall Foundation, Penn National Insurance, and PhoenixDesign Associates of York.

As always, our thanks to Dr. William Stowman and his staff at Messiah, and to Cyrus Chestnut, Jonathan Ragonese, KirkReese, Steve Meashey, Jeff Stabley, Ryan Sweer, Mitchell Stowman, Andrew Loose, Garrett Krohn and Brittany Taylor...ourbrilliant faculty.

We look forward to presenting the Camp again next year at Messiah and hope that you will consider donating scholarshipfunds for needy students in the coming year.
