Kathe Heuman Breast and Uterine Cancer Survivor SAU Graduate Audit Coordinator Kathe Heuman and RENEW. Kathe is second on the left, second row. Kathe Heuman helps students with new beginnings, and watches them leave as part of her everyday job as Graduate Audit Coordinator. A new beginning, a new chapter in life, is where Kathe remembers herself being after one of her many fights with cancer. It was a time she con- sidered her life, “a second chance.” Kathe was diagnosed at age 36 with breast cancer, just a year into her job at SAU. She discovered a lump on her breast, June 1985, and went to see a doctor who told her to just, “keep an eye on it.” Kathe monitored the growth. After a year, she was encouraged by others to get another opinion. After seeking a re-evaluation, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and was quickly scheduled for surgery, and six months of chemotherapy. The surgery and chemotherapy were successful in eliminating the cancer, and Kathe was cancer free. A year and a half after completing chemotherapy, however, Kathe returned for a routine chest x-ray, which found cancerous tumors on both of her lungs, and a suspicious mass on her liver. Doctors, once again, scheduled Kathe for chemo- therapy to eliminate the tumors, but this time for two years. During her treatments Kathe still worked at the SAU Registrars of- fice. At work it was difficult both physically and emotionally.
