Dear Friends of Canal Alliance,

We are so pleased to share this listing of our donors for July 2008-June 2009. This is our way to formally recognize you for your commitment and support. On behalf of the whole community, we thank you.

It is been a year of adversity, for individuals in the community, for our organization, and for you, our donors. But we are pleased to report that in the face of this adversity, we have seen a lot of success.

Canal Families are staying in place, getting work, and continuing to support their children. People here in the Canal have a spirit of survival and resiliency. With the support they receive from Canal Alliance, they are not just hanging on, they are thriving. Consider:

n Canal Youth Won the Green Effects Award from Sunchips® and National Geographic®. Canal youth designed and implemented a program to reduce litter and improve recycling with recicladors and giant tricycles.

n Canal Leaders are Everywhere. In recent years, more than 50 people have completed leadership training. Some are Promotoras, providing peer education on health, employment, parenting, and many more topics. Others are Concilio leaders taking on roles in the broader community, in San Rafael’s Disaster Preparedness CERT team, at the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, and on the Board of Marin Organizing Committee, to name a few. The Canal’s “voice” is being heard.

Canal Alliance has a balanced budget. Like our clients, our organization has demonstrated resiliency and ingenuity. We have been strategic, and have managed to avoid deep cuts that would have weakened our organization. Without expanding our programs, we have increased our successes with some remarkable innovations. And we have thought about how we will re-tool when things do turn around, so we will be ready. Some highlights:

n Canal Alliance served more than 3,000 families this year. They received 7,486 bags of food, 35 individuals passed their citizenship exams, 700 attended our English classes, 250 came to computer training, 1,200 received case management, sixty 6th-12th graders came to our after-school youth program and 26 college students received scholarships.

n The Family Empowerment Program was born. This fine tuning of our existing approach to youth and family case management enables us to provide intensive, wrap-around support to families with children in our youth programs. These families have made a significant commitment to their children, and we have made a significant commitment to them.

Individual donors gave more this year than ever before. Even as you felt the economy’s impact, you managed to find in your hearts the ability to support us at a higher level. You dug deep, you came through. That is why all of our successes are your successes, too. Thank you.

When I was looking for a new home for some of our baby gear, I called the Canal Alliance. It occurred to me that my friends from the Southern Marin Mother’s Club would want their gently-used and much-loved baby things go to families

in need. It’s been a wonderful relationship. Canal Alliance is always so grateful of the generosity of the Southern Marin Mother’s Club and the moms are appreciative knowing that their baby things are being put to such good use locally.

The congregation of St John’s Church in Ross is pleased to support the Canal Alliance as part of our Outreach Funding and Mission. The Alliance’s support of the local

community in need is a wonderful example of sharing God’s love with one another in a selfless and caring manner. We fully support and appreciate all that the Canal Alliance does to help and unite our community.

The Rev. Sarah Davis had made modest gifts to Canal Ministry between 1993 and 1999. This year we learned that we were among the beneficiaries of her Sarah A. Davis Charitable Remainder Trust.

A former Navy aviation mechanic, drill sergeant and Peace Corps

worker, Rev. Davis had been a deacon in the All Saints’ Episcopal Church. According to Richard Schaper, Gift Planning Officer, Episcopal Diocese of California, among the achievements of which she was most proud were the gold medals in swimming she earned at the Gay Games in Vancouver when she was already well into her middle years. For decades the medals were prominently featured on the wall of her three-story San Francisco Victorian that enjoyed wonderful views of the Marin Headlands and Mount Tamalpais.

When Sarah sold her home to move into a retirement center, the charitable remainder trust that she created with a portion of the sale proceeds provided her with a steady income for her monthly expenses until her death this past winter.

With the end of her need for income, the principal of the trust was distributed to the eight different ministries that she had selected including Canal Alliance.

Canal Alliance is most appreciative of Rev. Davis’ thoughtfulness and generosity and for the skillful legacy planning provided to her by the Episcopal Diocese of California.
