Short History of 3D Scanning

• 1850’s Photogrammetry. Basically as soon as photography was invented then methods use the photographs were developed to interpret distances

• 1950’s: First came the Touch or Contact Probe aka CMM Coordinate Measuring Machine. 1st commercial unit introduced in Britain in 1951.

• 1980’s- early 1990’s: Some of the first light scanners became available . One of the first applications was capturing human forms for the animation industry.

• Mid 1990’s: Early commercial units became available in the mid 90’s. They were very costly $250K+ requiring high end computer hardware to operate Unix Workstations $50-100K. Manual operation. Operators would take still shots then merging all scans into a single point cloud, editing it to remove all holes, noise and flaws, then surfacing or spline sectioning the point cloud automatically or semi-automatically

• 2000’s: With the usual cost of technology dropping the main development focus has been on improving the intermediate steps required to get the data from the scanner to a complete 3D model, including direct importation of the point cloud data into CAD systems such as SolidWorks and ProE.

• Over the last 10-15 years there has also been much commercial effort to develop fully automated systems. These are the first automated inspection systems.

Technology of 3D ScanningTRIANGULATION• Emits a laser light• Uses Sensors(Camera) to read Laser Crosshairs• Uses the principles of a Triangle to calculate distance and

position• Uses Reflective Targets for positioning • Two Types of Systems

– Optical Profilometer, fitted on an arm– Portable 3D Scanner

CONS• Line of Sight, Viewing Cone• Range (12”-15”)

PROS• Accuracy • Speed

Technology of 3D ScanningWHITE LIGHT SCANNING• Emits a Polarized light pattern or a Coded light pattern • Uses Sensors(Camera) to read returning patterns of light• Uses the principles of a Triangulation and Photogrammetry to

calculate distance and position• Decodes returning patterns of light to digitize object• Two Types of Systems

– Polarized Light Pattern (Fixed)– Coded Light Pattern (Handheld)

PROS• Range (within 3ft. or further from object)• Speed • Accuracy

CONS• Range (within 3ft. or further from object)• Part must be White
