Printing from moveable type was first inventedin China in the 1040s. The earliest surviving worksbelonging to Bi Sheng. The earliest surviving Europeanletterforms are Greek (scratched in stone). In time, thesethin, primarily straight lined forms with open apertures,developed thicker strokes, their apeture lessened, andserifs were created. These forms were the basis for thethe formal lettering of the Roman Empire.
