ST STEPHEN MARTYR CATHOLIC CHURCH
"My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?" Today's Gospel
parable is unsettling in several ways. The various images of rejection, mistreatment, and
violence paint an unpleasant picture. Guests refuse to come to a feast, servants are killed,
troops are dispatched. The King continues to try to fill his dinner hall, and then when some-
one finally does show up, the King throws him out for wearing the wrong clothes. What is
going on here?
The message would have been a poignant one for his Jewish listeners. As the chosen peo-
ple, they were the first to receive the "invitation" to share in the kingdom of God. But the
chief priests and elders were uninterested in accepting Jesus and his authority; thus they didn't show up for the feast. But what
about those who did come? Something is expected of them as well. Donning a "wedding garment" is like being properly
prepared to enter God's kingdom. Just showing up isn't enough.
Here it's important to pay attention to the details. The King first calls his poorly dressed guest "friend." The approach begins with
mercy and kindness. But the man gives no defense for himself, and displays no desire to change. It's as if he doesn't really
care to be there at all.
The question this raises for us is whether or not we are "dressed" appropriately. We may hang around the banquet hall--going
to church, professing to be Christian--but are we sincere guests of the King of kings? Do we truly accept Christ's teachings and
live by them, or are we just showing up? The splendors of the invitation Christ gives us should not be taken for granted. We are
called to share in a royal feast. May we all be grateful guests.
TURKEY DRIVE This year the St. Stephen Community Out-reach Program has the task of feeding 200 needy families from the cities of Monterey Park and Alhambra during the Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas holidays.
We are asking that you help them with this challenge and sup-porting their 3rd Annual Turkey Drive.
Starting next Saturday October 21st we will begin asking for donations to help support this cause. For every $15 donated, a feather will be placed on a cardboard turkey with the donor’s name which will be located in the Ves-tibule area of the church during the months of October and November.
Donations can be make by using the envelopes provided in the pews. Envelopes can be placed in the collection basket during Mass or delivered to the Parish Office directly.
Thank you in advance for your support!

No
nuestra fe y amor y dar frutos abundantes. ¿Lo haremos? ¿Tenemos vestido nuevo para la invitación?

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY 2017-2018 SCHOOL STUDENT NON-
DISCRIMINATION POLICY The school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of
Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color, national origin, and/or ethnic origin
to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to
students at the school. The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disa-
bility, medical condition, sex, or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of
educational policies and practices, scholarship programs, and athletic and other school-
administered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit
participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single-sex schools. While the
school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services
may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued
enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student's emotional, academic,
and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student's
needs. This Catholic Elementary School publishes the above policy in the staff and parent/
student handbooks, public relations/recruitment brochures and in other publications such
as the parish bulletin and school newspaper. The school also publishes applicable griev-
ance procedures in the staff and parent/student handbooks.
