National Alliance on Mental Illness

NAMI, The National Alliance On Mental Illness, was founded by 4 families in 1979. It is largest grassroots mental health

organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI advocates for

access to services, treatment, support and research and is steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness and building

a community of hope for all those in need.

FAMILY TO FAMILY

• For family members, partners, caregivers and friends of someone living with a mental illness

• 12-week course; offered in Monroe, Wayne and Genesee Counties taught in Spring and Fall

• Family to Family is also offered in conjunction with the Veterans Administration for family members, partners, caregivers and friends of Veteran’s living with a mental illness which includes module on PTSD.

• For parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses

• Meets once a week for 6 weeks • "This is the best program for families with children. It answers so many

questions for parents. It can change and improve so many lives."

• Fun, practical 6 week course on nutrition, exercise, meal planning and personal awareness

• "This course has literally been a life saver. It has opened my eyes to better understanding my illness and methods of recovery I did not know about before taking the course."

Examples of Additional Community Outreach• Educational Community Presentations by NAMI Rochester Staff and Volunteers to

any group such as Strong Psychiatric Nursing Department Staff members; Churches, Kiwanis Club, Civic groups and others

• Ongoing Individual Telephone and In-Office Family support services and referral services during regular business hours (9am-4pm Monday through Friday).

• We are a referral Service to other agencies appropriate for the inquiries we that receive

• Monroe County Mental Health Court Representation each Thursday afternoon to assist the needs of individuals and family members within the Criminal Justice system

• Representation on the Monroe County Office of Mental Health Criminal Justice Sub Committee Monroe

• Representation on the Monroe County Office of Mental Health Community Services Board
