The Department of Tourism in Jammu & Kashmir is a promotional and regulatory organization.In 1988, the State o!ernment spe"ified the duties and fun"tions of the Dire"torate of J&K Tourism as #ell as J&K Tourism De!elopment
$orporation. %ll "ommer"ial a"ti!ities su"h as operation and management of
a""ommodation in all Tourist $entres at Srinagar and Jammu Tourist $omplees, 'uts and
Tourist (ungalo#s at !arious resorts #ere entrusted to the JKTD$.
32.2 The Department "arries out the tas) of o!er all planning, promotion pu*li"ity and
mar)eting, regulation of tra!el trade in terms of J&K registration of Tourist Trade %"t,
19+88-.
32.3 !er the years, the organizational stru"ture of the Department has undergone a
drasti" "hange. The ma/or restru"turing in"luded "reation of t#o separate dire"torates for
the t#o di!isions *esides "reation of 10 e# De!elopment %uthorities for ma/or tourist
destinations. Su*se2uently 0 more De!elopment %uthorities #ere esta*lished raising their total strength to -3.
32.4 The Tourism Department at present is administrating its programmess"hemes

4ØTo ensure lo"al parti"ipation of the people in tourism a"ti!ities, espe"ially in
esta*lishing A"o5tourism 7ro/e"ts.
5Ø To pro!ide in"enti!es to the lo"al sta)e holders and
"ondu"t "apa"ity *uilding programmes for the lo"al ser!i"e
pro!iders. &
6Ø:ost importantly, to ensure planned de!elopment as per land use indi"ated in the
master plan, to *e dra#n.
32.5 The Dire"torates are operating their offi"es at different resortstourist pla"es in all
the three regions #ithin their respe"ti!e territorial /urisdi"tions. (esides, si offi"es outside
the State lo"ated at e# Delhi, Kol)otta, %hemada*ad, 'ydera*ad, $hennai, and :um*ai
are loo)ed after *y Dire"torate of Tourism, Kashmir.
32.6 The JKTD$ underta)es "ommer"ial a"ti!ities li)e "onstru"tion of a""ommodation
fa"ilitiesrunning of "afeterias restaurants, organization of food festi!als and tour and
tra!el a"ti!ities in and outside the state.
32.7 The SKI$$, *esides pro!iding "onferen"e fa"ilities, also "ondu"ts *usiness
a"ti!ities li)e do"umentation, internet fa"ilities et".
32.8 The J&K $a*le $ar $orporation is responsi*le for "onstru"tion of passenger
rope#ays and "hairlifts in the State. The $orporation is su""essfully running the
prestigious ulmarg ondola pro/e"t.
32.9 The >S$ So"iety is responsi*le for maintaining the famous >oyal Spring olf
$ourse lo"ated in the foot hills of =a*ar#an o!erloo)ing the *an)s of Dal <a)e. The golf
"ourse re"ei!es the golfers from all o!er.
32.10 The Tourism Department, J&K also pro!ides finan"ial assistan"e to Ja#ahar Institute of :ountaineering and ater Sports #hi"h is one of the *est mountaineering
institutes of the "ountry responsi*le for imparting training in ad!enture tourism and
"ondu"t of mountaineering epeditions in and outside the state.
