FROM THE RECTOR 31 August 2014

Dear Friends, In the gospel this Sunday Peter is again at the centre of the story. He had just recognised Jesus as the Messiah; now he rejects the idea of his passion and death. Rejecting Peter’s remonstration as a temptation, Jesus speaks to his followers in every age: only by following him on the way to the cross will they come to true life. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: Lord for thy tender mercy's sake by Richard Farrant (c. 1525-1580) dates from the mid-sixteenth century and probably dates from the reign of Edward VI (reigned 1547-1553) when syllabic motes (with one note to a word) replaced complex Latin polyphony as the linga franca of the English Church. Farrant was an almost exact contemporary of the more famous Thomas Tallis. Alta beata Trinita is an anonymous Italian composition dating from the fifteenth-century. Its Italian text is usually translated as 'High and blessed Trinity, by us always adored. Glorious Trinity, Marvellous unity, You are savory manna and all that we can desire'. The War March of the Priests is the most famous extract from Felix Mendelssohn's (1809-1847) incidental music to a production of Jean Racine's tragedy Athaliah (1691) staged in Berlin in 1841.

St John’s Inaugural Festival of Music: Countdown, 3 weeks until 20 and 21 September. Something for everyone! Don’t miss a minute of the worship, music, hospitality and fellowship. Are the dates in your diary?

Caritas: Come and join us for a Games Night and supper. If you have a favourite game that can be played in one hour please bring it along. There will be something for everyone.

St John's Op Shop will be held next on Saturday 6 September, 8:00 to 11:30am. Help is needed, please, for:

o Thursday – emptying Op shop storeroom and stocking tables, 3:00pm. o Friday – setting up and displaying stock for sale, 9:30am. o Saturday – putting away and cleaning, 11:30am

We urgently need extra help during the trading on Saturday also, as a number of our workers will be away. Please contact Robyn Couch (0414 645 338) or the Parish Office (9971-8694 Mon-Fri, 9:00am-1:00pm) if you can help.

Rosters – Rosters – Rosters!!! With our “Rosterer-In-Chief”, Bev returning from overseas soon, rosters for the next 4 months (October 2013 to January 2014) are soon to be prepared. We will be in touch with those on the current rosters list. It is imperative, though, to meet the need for more people to volunteer for helping generally, particularly at the Sunday services which they attend (especially 10:00am), on the Tuesday/Friday cafe, and with weekly church cleaning and grounds upkeep. It is important also to know if you are intending to be away and your availability for the Christmas services. If you can help, please contact Beck Whelan or leave your details at the office for her to call you. Happy Birthday: Ken O’Donell (4th), Grace Mackay (7th)

Wedding Anniversary Congratulations Lynette and Tony Johnson (2nd)
