President Carol Riley called the meeting to order and asked for eye contact. Always a teacher. Denny Meyer led the pledge. PP Dick Matti inspired us with fact that food fuels service. PP Stephen Morgan introduced guests: Jane Ferrara, Executive Director of the Navy League, and Alma Gracki, a submarine repair specialist. No Welcome Song leader, thus no song sung. PP Chuck Braden is anxious to get out of of town and wants a nice Rotarian to take care of his 2 Cats and predatory fish. House sitters can use his cars and put mail in laundry basket. Evidently he gets a lot of dirty mail. Active duty: Monday, 9/30 to Tuesday, 10/15. Call 808-265-6955. Back To School Service Project at Walmart, Saturday, 27 July, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm needs 10 more volunteers. Contact PP Stephen Morgan. The Rotary Foundation’s Byzantine Structure Reminds Us the Rotary was Founded as Federation of Local Clubs, Not a Massive Worldwide Charity: Thus, half of all donations return to the District and from there to individual clubs under the SHARE option. When you donate to The Foundation the District matches your sum dollar for dollar, but then passes it forward to R. I. where they match the combined sum by 50 cents on the dollar. Every dollar you donate becomes $2.50 in the process. If you do not designate as SHARE, however, it goes into the World Fund with no returns to your local club. This funds the major projects of The Foundation with the allocations being made its Board of Directors.

This was described by our guest speaker, Rich Zegar, who came to show us how our donations fund Vocational Training Teams (VTT) in the Romania’s Craniofacial Malformation Project. Unlike the former Rotary Group Study Exchange Program which sent District Rotarians overseas to help in a joint project that emphasized social networking, the VTT sends teams of experts to train, in this case, Romanian doctors how to remove malformations in the faces of local citizens the the latest plastic surgery techniques. For the patient this is life transforming. For Rotarian doctors this shares expertise. For Rotarians in clubs in three continents, we together were able to trigger miracles. Our donations were a part of these accomplishments. And you probably thought that you were merely being generous. SERVICE ABOVE SELF means that you extended your reach internationally. Congratulations. You did not just roll up your sleeves to help, but you actually grew beyond your sleeves. PP Dave Livingston won the drawing again, but failed to personally enrich himself, but got a watch and nudged Rotary service worldwide. To celebrate the fact we recited the Four-Way Test and adjourned. Respectfully submitted by one-finger Bob sent from my iPhone, PP Bob Tellander, Scribe

WEEKLY REPORT — WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2019

ROTARY AND SHELTERBOX PARTNERSHIP

Rotary International announced on 3 June a three-year partnership renewal with its disaster relief project partner, ShelterBox. For al-most 20 years, this unique humanitarian alliance has supported families with a place to call home after disaster.

Rotary is a global network whose members take action to make a lasting difference in their communities – and worldwide. ShelterBox provides emergency shelters and other essential items to support families who have lost their homes in disaster.

What began as a local connection with one Cornish Rotary Club has led to an international movement that’s provided 140,000 Shel-terBox family tents or 390,000 ShelterKits worldwide to date (a val-ue of over £54 million).

First adopted as a millennium project by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in 2000, the support of Rotary members and clubs around the world saw ShelterBox become Rotary’s Project Partner in Disas-ter Relief in 2012. Since then, the partnership has helped transform ShelterBox into an internationally recognized disaster relief charity, supporting families with emergency shelter after disaster.

The partnership extends far beyond financial support. Around 1,000 Rotary members are involved in ShelterBox as volunteers, staff or response team members. And clubs worldwide offer valuable, prac-tical assistance to help ShelterBox reach more families fleeing dis-aster or conflict.

This has recently included support for families in Malawi flooded from their homes by Cyclone Idai and communities in Lombok dev-astated by the 2018 earthquake and tsunami (quotes and details at the end of this release).

“ShelterBox has been Rotary’s Project Partner in Disaster Relief since 2012, and we are excited to renew the partnership for another three years,” says Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko.

“Through this project partnership, Rotary members around the globe can collaborate with ShelterBox to support communities in desper-ate need of emergency temporary shelter and vital supplies follow-ing natural disasters,” adds Hewko. “Additionally, Rotary and Shel-terBox will continue to expand cooperation efforts through prepared-ness training and stockpiles of prepositioned aide in disaster-prone regions.”

My name is Ferry Zandvliet from The Netherlands. In 2015 I survived a terrorist attack in Paris. I was inside the Batalcan theatre where during a rock concert 89 people were killed and over 300 were shot. I managed to survive and escape the venue. I tried to hide under dead bodies and finally escaped the attack crawling to the exit while there were 3 terrorist shooting at me. A horrible night off course

but it changed me for the better. I had a lot of anger inside me after what had happened but I decided to put my anger into action!

Since a few years I am a motivational speaker and I am sharing my story to the most diverse crowds. In the end my story is about how I dealt with this setback. And don’t we all have setbacks?

I gave several presentation for the Rotary in my home country The Netherlands. Amazing people who do amazing work all over the world!

Regards from The Netherlands and have a great day!
