A large number of students from many schools across the country got together in different towns to compete in their particular sport. The ‘A’ Netball team has arrived back from Nelson after a very busy and successful week at their South Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament. As usual, this was a very big gathering with 32 teams in the ‘A’ grade, 32 in the ’B’ grade and 10 teams in the ’C’ grade. Schools taking part ranged from Fiordland in the deep South up to Collingwood at the top of the Island. Our girls left Milton on Saturday 20 th and travelled to Hanmer Springs where they stayed the night. The following day they continued up to Nelson. The tournament began on Monday 22 nd and over the next four days, the girls played nine games. Of these games, they had seven convincing wins and two narrow losses. They finished the tournament in second place in ‘C’ grade. This is an excellent achievement for our girls, and means the team next year will play in ‘B’ grade. They also had the least number of goals scored against them in their grade, and Amanda Williamson was once again selected as one of the Talented Payers at the tournament. All of the girls were involved in fundraising for several months before their trip and thank everyone who supported them with this. Mrs Tapp, Mrs Gilling and Ms Bryant accompanied the team as their managers. Our congratulations to the players; Amanda Williamson, Julia Gilling, Lucy Pringle, Ashley McDiarmid, Elese Lloyd, Abby Harrex, Daniele May, Gina Hall and Sam Allan and to their coach, Nikki Milford.

Milton Kindergarten News Go Team Go! We are fortunate to have a sports coach come in and work with the children of Milton Kindergarten. This is a highlight for many of the children’s week and for some of them they get to spend time working in small groups for quality learning. This involves a range of physical and ball skills, as well as opportunities to practice the all-important social skills that they learn while at kindergarten. The range of activities varies from individual skills where they work on personal goals to team work where the requirement is to work together for a common goal. This has been a huge success whether they are on site in the kindergarten or utilizing some of the communities’ resources. With this new program we can promise fun, challenge and some very tired children at the end of the day!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora Year 10 Camp After a delay due to the weather, the Year 10 students went on an outdoor education camp to Tautuku last week. Thanks to the efforts of teachers and volunteer helpers, students were able to participate and contribute in the various activities designed to be enjoyable whilst gaining confidence in meeting new challenges. Mathletics Students took part in a Mathletics competition held at the Dunedin Town Hall on Monday evening. It is pleasing that we have students being involved in this activity thus extending the boundaries of their mathematical understanding and knowledge. The preparation and organisation for the event by our mathematics teachers is appreciated. Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Katoa Wayne Edgar Principal

What a beautiful day for the cross country last Thursday. It was worth the wait to get the nice spring weather and it certainly made the day more pleasant for both the children and the spectators. Thank you to all the parents who came along to support us. The children did really well and we were proud of them. Congratulations to Aimee and Leah who got first and second in their race. Kelsey was third in her race. On Monday a team of four students will go down to Clinton to take part in the South Otago Cross Country – Kelsey Carter, Tegan Tapp, Milli Geary and Jorjah Mason-Waru.

What’s been happening at St Mary’s? International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Testing in SCIENCE Some of the Year 5 – 6 children sat the ICAS Science test. Students from St Mary’s School – Milton achieved outstanding results when they participated in Mathematics ICAS tests this year. Those student’s whose achievements were outstanding, were rewarded with Certificates of Credit. The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools provide extensive independent evaluations of student’s skills, knowledge and understandings in the core learning areas. ICAS tests are conducted annually across Australia, NZ and 11 other countries. These skills and understandings are important indicators of success in school and beyond. All students from St Mary’s School – Milton are to be congratulated on their significant achievements. The following children received Certificates: CREDIT – Liam Grant, Matthew Hebert, Richard Scott, Sarah Williams Trip to the Otago Museum St Mary’s school children had two fabulous days at the Museum. The instructors, did a great job of engaging everyone in the activities about Egypt and ‘cultural currencies’ around the world; leading into our barter and trade unit at the end of this Term. The Rooms 1 and 2 children had fun participating in the mummification process, and having their ideas about Egypt come to life so dramatically. They were also able to experience the Egyptian creation stories in the Star Lab. Then, they were put into ‘villages’ and ‘tribes’ to show how the bartering and trading process works. The Rooms 3 and 4 children learned about the Greeks and Romans. The teacher for the day taught the children about how the Greeks and Romans lived. They got to be archaeologists and even tried to piece together broken pots. Their morning ended with a race to find out as much information as they could about a secret person living in Greek times. They had to figure out who they were by using clues from around the gallery and working together as a team. In the afternoon they also worked with the Museum teacher again to learn about barter and trade. They learned about how money wasn’t always used and they had to trade items that they thought were valuable such as a whales tooth and fish hook. The children all represented St. Mary’s very well, with help from the many parents who gave up their time to assist.

Mana Wahine Day “He Wahine He Taonga”. Held at Milton Country Club 18th August 2011 We were fortunate to have health promoters from Public Health South (Breast and Cervical screening) and Cancer Society sharing their wealth of knowledge amongst all. Massage by Tuami Ora services proved to be very popular with everyone keen to get the ‘kinks’ worked out! Well done to the rangatahi who did the nails and hair grooming, ladies took the opportunity to spoil themselves, sit down and relax while they had their nails and hair groomed. Wow! and Milton Primary school juniors kapahaka group delighted the crowd with their great kapahaka performance. Many thanks to Nga Whanau O Tokomairiro for the great lunch served, and to work this off Zumba demonstration which ladies were happy to join in. Many thanks to Westpac, and Public Health South, for the great prizes, which were used for “Quiz time was great” the giveaways on the day were well received from the ladies. Tokomairiro Waiora Inc would like to thank everyone that participated on the day.

Miton Garden Club On Monday 8th August the AGM was held in the Senior Citizens Rooms. After general business and the President’s Report, Office Bearers were elected for the year. President; Val Cullen, Vice President; Frances Grant, Secretary; Jenni McIntosh, Treasurer; Sheila Steele, Committee; Isobel Robinson, Helen Pierce, Leonore Pringle and Coral Beattie. With all the business attended to Mollie Tiffany gave an interesting talk on Shanghai, which she and husband Colin had visited earlier in the year. With a population of 20 million people this is an amazing culture shock for us to begin to comprehend. Customs, lifestyle and food so very different from our own and as they were staying with their family nine storey’s up in an apartment block. They had a chance to experience the day to day living and sights and sounds night and day of this vast city. Mollie continued answering questions and showing photographs as we all enjoyed afternoon tea and a general get together. Raffle winners were Ngaire McGrouther and Ngaire Smith. On Monday 12th September we are travelling to visit gardens at Waihola with afternoon tea at Jenni McIntosh’s home. Transport leaves Elizabeth Street at 1.30pm.

Book Review Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi Recently the graphic novel or comics format has been used to tell stories that are both provocative and personal. One of the most celebrated of these is Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis. Persepolis is an autobiographical story that tells of Satrapi and her family’s life in Iran in the early 80’s after the rise to power of a fundamentalist Islamic Government. Satrapi, a young girl at the time, has to deal with abrupt changes in her life. The story is told in a clear narrative style that relates the events and transformations that take place in her country. Her parents while liberal are forced to adopt fundamentalist garb and views in public, while trying to live a life of intellectual freedom in private. Satrapi observes this dichotomy in both words and pictures. The first chapter is about the re-introduction of veils for females and she shows this and the changes that follow through an egocentric child’s eye. Other chapters tell of her country’s history and other events that occur under the repressive rule of the government, and the subsequent war with Iraq. Satrapi’s pictures are seemingly primitive and child like but their simplicity juxtaposed against the brutal events that happen present a chilling story that is both effective and moving. The pages have a compelling sense of design and the cramped panels and the black and white art serve to underscore the repressive regime that Satrapi lived under. Any colour would have added an air of sentimentality to the narrative and this would have undercut the story’s impact. As Satrapi ages, the chapters become more loosely linked together but still have a tremendous cumulative impact. The graphics in the narrative are both shocking and emotional even if the dialogue and narration are more restrained. The chapter entitled The Key shows the world view of Fundamentalist Islam and also examines its spirit of martyrdom. Persepolis has been critically acclaimed and has won many awards since its publication in English. It is a moving account of a world in turmoil and the experiences and emotions of those involved in the turmoil. This graphic novel is suitable for adults and older teenagers and is a compelling and emotional read. Persopolis will be available to senior students at the Tokomairiro High School Library

Euchre Report

Playcentre Report Kia ora and welcome to our article on activities and learning at Milton Playcentre. Over the past week or two, we have all been busy meeting new children and parents into the centre which is wonderful. It’s so great for the children to meet new friends and for all of us to get to know the parents. The weather has been so kind to us with the sun shining and warm days, outside play is first on the list, after our parent help does an outside safety check which is part of our centre. There has been a lot of experimenting with paint colours and the children are using different objects and textures to create. We have started to plant certain vegetables in our raised gardens for our residents, giant Rabby and his friend Squeek the guinea pig. We have also purchased a brand new swing so now the children have more choices on which swing to play on. Also at the front of our building there is a new gate which we must all remember to close at all times. We have another cell phone number that is available for cancellations and any other things. Its 027 418 2310 besides our centre phone number of 03 417 4687. Call in anytime for any enquiries and speak to our friendly staff. Our centre hours are: 8:45 till 12:45 for all the children. WINZ SUBSIDY AVAILABLE. 20 hours free available for 3 - 5 year olds.

Cross Country On the 21st of August, the children of Milton Primary School had our Cross Country. At 10 o’clock everyone went over to the showgrounds so we could view our course. The first race was at 1.30pm and that was the Year 1 boys and the races finished at about 2:40pm. When people were coming up to the finish line the large crowd of people watching went wild!!! There were some very close finishes and everyone was exhausted at the end of their races. Despite the recent spell of wet weather the grounds were in reasonably good condition although it was muddy in places. Some of our classmates and friends are going to the South Otago Cross Crountry in Clinton to represent our school. Because of this, training and running practice is still carrying on. We are sure our representatives at Clinton will make us proud. GO MILTON!!!

Golf Report

On Saturday the 27th of August the Milton Junior Football Club held their end of season prizegiving at St Mary’s School hall. The day started with the traditional 12th Grade versus the rest free for all game which featured some parents, in particular some fathers, well past their prime reliving their past glories. Fortunately for Milton football the children have had a great season of football thanks to the efforts of their coaches and supportive parents. Club President Jason Walker thanked all parents and supporters for attending and presented the awards. He also made special mention of the support of local business Tiffs Engineering for helping build and donating some materials for the construct ion of our new goalposts. He also thanked the Milton Rotary Club for awarding the Football club a $500 grant. Also thanked were Tiny’s Butchery, Milton SuperValue and Tokomairi ro High School grounds keepers Tony Foster and Mick O’Connor for their support. A special presentation was made to Jason and Shelley Walker for the huge effort they have put in this year towards the Club. As well as being busy parents, Jason is a Corrections Officer and St Johns volunteer and Shelley is working towards a Diploma in Education and will qualify as a teacher later this year. Thanks guys!

This Year’s award winners are: Midgets – Most Improved Player – Ryan Clark. Coach: Julie Anne Mallon 8th Grade – Most Improved Player – George Lerew Coach: Brangka Munan 10th Grade – Most Improved Player – Hoani Wipaki Coach: Jason Walker 12th Grade – Most Improved Player – Rachel Thompson Coach: Chris Herring Senior Sportsperson of the Year – Clark Trophy – Callum Scoon Junior Sportsperson of the Year – Meg Clark On a more personal note, as I watched our children receive their certificates I was struck by the thought of how little time we have with them at the age where they’re happy to sit crossed legged on the floor of a school hall. In a very few short years they will be out there in the big, c razy wor ld fending for themselves. So to all you parents who become involved in your children's lives and sporting or cultural activities, thank you and well done. It isn’t always easy with bills to pay and time off hard to come by, but the payback is immeasurable. It’s been fun writing this regular blurb, see you all next year. Brangka
