From our minister to students... Summer blockbusters is a phrase many of us have heard
throughout the years but probably never really put much thought into. Every year, movies are released by major studios with the hopes that they will be the next big hit. It always amuses me that around late win-ter/early spring every year, you will hear the same phrase worded slightly different in several different movie trailers. You will hear something along the lines of, “(Movie Title) is going to be the biggest movie of the year” or “(Movie Title) promises to be the one movie you cannot afford to miss this summer.” The projected expectations of these movies by these studios are typically much grander than they actually turn out to be. Very rarely is a movie the “must see” that they promise us. Movie studios have lofty expectations of movies breaking all kinds of records and receiving all kinds of awards and very rarely are these expectations met. However, on occasion, they are.
I read an article just yesterday (7/22/19) stating that a record that had been held for 10 years had been broken. In December of 2009, the movie Avatar was released, and it broke the record for the most money ever made in theaters. Not only did it break it, it crushed it. It beat the previous record holder by over $600 million by taking in 2.788 billion dollars. If you’re anything like me, you cannot even begin to fathom how much money that is. I feel it is safe to say that the studio’s financial expectations were met. That record lasted for 10 years before being broken just within the last couple of weeks. Avengers: Endgame was released back in April and it just surpassed 2.79 billion dollars from theater revenue. Again, more money than I can even begin to think through…
All throughout life, we have to deal with expectations. Some of these expectations are placed on us by others and some of these ex-pectations are placed by us. No matter where it originated, oftentimes these expectations go unmet. With Christ, however, He never disap-points. He always exceeds. When our desires match up with His, He will always deliver. He will never abandon us. He is always right there with us. In fact, Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear of be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” The Lord our God will never forsake us. He always fulfills His promises. He always exceeds expectations. Everything else in the world is capable of letting us down. Jesus, however, never will.
