A finger stall protects you from being cut by the leader on the cast.

Use a shock leader and elastic marker.

Use heavy mono or braid to create the shock leader and have at least three turns around the spool when your rig is level with the rod spigot ready for casting. To achieve more power and prevent slicing your finger, a finger stall is a must-have for distance casting.

Helicopter set-ups or lead clip-style rigs are pretty reliable for distance work, although I do prefer the latter. A tournament shaped lead coupled with a short, semi-stiff hook-link will also improve distance and help to avoid tangles. You can also use a PVA mesh stick set-up to keep the rig streamline, or if using a PVA bag put the entire rig and lead in a small bag - both of these options will avoid tangles and make sure presentation is correct when you do get out there.

A lot of the time, when distance fishing, it is critical to hit exactly the same spot every time, especially if you want to bait up with a spod. Remember that the distance you can fish at is ultimately restricted by how far you can get your marker float out. There is no point going long and not knowing the depth/conditions that are out there! So use a really decent 3.75lb rod for your marker. There is a tendency for anglers to pay out less money for a marker rod, but if you are planning to go long it is a vital tool and you will have to splash the dosh to get a good one.

A further tip is to pick a far-bank feature to cast in line with and use a bright marker elastic on your line to ensure you hit the same distance on each cast. There is marker elastic on the market but I use Hi-Viz green pole elastic - it is cheaper, better and doesn’t restrict the cast in any way. Keep your rod tip high so the line is free flowing on the cast. You can decide not to use a marker to assess the swim but you are only really then left with fishing the chod rig method.

When you do present baits at range, bite sensitivity can be reduced, particularly with monofilament mainlines. There is more stretch and movement in mono, and finicky bites can struggle to register. To improve this, especially in windy conditions, it pays to use a bobbin that can have extra weight added to it. The new Kodex Bobbinz don’t just look the business, they are also very functional as they feature additional weight loadings, allowing you to stay flexible about how much mass to load onto the body. Extra weight helps to keep your line running more directly to your rig, so shy bites can be registered more quickly and not be missed.

Don’t be put off if you feel that others around you can cast further with less effort. You don’t need to look like a body builder to achieve big distances – it comes with practice, the right rod, the right set-up and developing timing and hand speed.

Top TipIf the bottom is weedy I do not pin down the line at distance, but will always do so if on gravel or silt. It is then essential to make sure you use a light-weight back lead that will release on the strike. The IQ 10g back leads are brilliant and you can adjust the release tension, so they will drop off. The last thing you want is a back lead dangling while trying to play a fish at distance. I would rather lose a back lead than lose the fish!
