THE MOST RELIABLE NEWSPAPER AROUND YOU
New Light of MyanmarMotion picture will be able to emerge as a new competitive
value-added innovation only when art, economy and
technology are combined perfectly
YANGON, 29 Dec
Myanmar Motion Picture
Academy Award-Present-
ing Ceremony for 2012
took place at Thuwunna
National Indoor Stadium-1
on Waizayanta Road in
Thingangyun Township,
here, this afternoon.
Of 17 movies shown
in 2012, academy awards
went to the winners for their
outstanding performances.
Then, the Academy
awards ceremony followed.
Union Minister for
Information U Aung Kyi
delivered an address at the
ceremony. He said:
It is everybodys
knowledge that motion pic-
ture is recognized world-
wide as a high-value crea-
tive industry in knowledge
economy. Creative industry
is different from conven-
tional one. Whereas the
latter manufactures conven-
tional products with sub-
stantial capital, machinery
and labor, the former has
its essence in individual
creativity, skill and talent
founded upon innovationand cultural knowledge.
Therefore, each artist
must have unlimited re-
sources of intellectual crea-
tivity and skill, insight and
inspiration. Motion picture
will be able to emerge as a
new competitive value-add-
ed innovation only when
art, economy and technol-
ogy are combined perfectly.
It is everyones knowledge
that cosmetic outputs will
not create a sustainable
business in local and for-
eign markets. Therefore, it
is important that artists and
technicians attract more lo-
cal and foreign investment
into lm industry to ensure
its competitiveness in the
future.
As part of the govern-
ments reform process, the
Information Ministry has
undergone some adminis-
trative changes. In the past,
public services delivery was
centralized and now it has
been handed to institutions
concerned. This move is
bound to result in a shift
from dependence on com-petence of civil servants to
reliance on institutions con-
cerned which are to take on
greater responsibility.
The Information Min-
istry will stand as a fa-
cilitator for public services
delivery and fulll such
institutional requirements
as copyright protection,
capacity building, antitrust
measures, plus provision of
legal coordination in regu-
latory framework and ethi-
cal issues and preservation
of tradition.
It is my honour to take
this opportunity to express
my rm belief that since
Myanmar Motion Picture
Organization has complete
freedom to choose Academy
award winners as of 2013, it
will achieve signicant suc-
cesses and greater support
in providing services to the
public from now on.
Chairman of Myanmar
Motion Picture Organiza-
tion U Lu Min spoke on the
occasion. He said:
While the country is
witnessing a series of re-
forms, our world of arts is
also moving upward. Ac-
cording to desires of the
members of our industry,
the executive board of My-
anmar Motion Picture Or-
ganization was formed via
free and fair elections on
10 April, 2012. We all are
united and exerted our all-
out efforts in the start.
We all are responsible
for the future of our world.
It is of vital importance for
our industry to have a lm
law that protect the industry
and lay a specic platform
for the future. So, I would
hereby like to urge the fel-
low members of lm indus-
try to focus on the emer-
gence of the lm law.
We for our part must
strive to reach a level worth
such congratulation and the
state should also support us
in our bid to progress. We
ourselves believe that we
will be the ones that could
contribute to the good of
the nation.
All in all, I would like
to bring a theme of the pre-
vious SEA Games success-
fully hosted by our country,
We can do! If all of us ex-
ert our efforts, we could de-velop our industry. I cant
do alone. And no one can.
But we can do.

Apple CEOs 2013 pay
steady but sees part of stockaward shrink
SANFRANCISCO, 29 Dec
Apple Inc (AAPL.O)CEO Tim Cook earnedroughly the same in 2013 as
in 2012, but lost part of hisperformance-based stockaward during a year in whichintense competition and mar-
gin pressure bludgeoned the
iPhone makers stock.Cook took home $4.25
million, including a base
salary of $1.4 million and aperformance bonus of $2.8million, roughly on par with2012, the company said in a
preliminary proxy statementon Friday.
But he gave up about
7,100 shares tied to an an-nual performance-dependentaward, based on shareholder
returns from 24 August of2012 to 25 August, 2013.Apples stock lost a quarterof its value over that one-yearperiod.
The company also ad-
vised shareholders to votedown a resolution by activ-ist investor Carl Icahn, who
proposed the iPhone makerbuy back $50 billion worth of
shares in scal 2014. It wasthe rst time the companyhad publicly voiced its re-sponse to Icahns demands.
Apple argued on Fridayit has already returned $43billion in dividends andshare repurchases over the
rst six months of its roughly$100 billion capital returnprogramme.
The dynamic competi-tive landscape and the com-
panys rapid pace of innova-tion require unprecedentedinvestment, exibility andaccess to resources, Applesaid in advising shareholders
to reject Icahns proposal.Known for decades of
strong-arm tactics, includ-
ing proxy ghts, Icahn has
repeatedly made it clear thathis proposal is not a sign thathe stands against Apples
management. The billionairehas discussed the issue with
Cook in past months, arguingvia tweets that a buyback ofas much as $150 billion iswithin the companys means
and would prop up its stock.Reuters
scientist with Berlins Se-curity Research Labs, toldReuters ahead of a highly
anticipated talk at a confer-ence in Germany that his rmdiscovered the issue while
reviewing security measures
implemented by mobileoperators around the world.
Nohl also told Reutersthat the carriers had failed to
fully address vulnerabilitiesthat would allow hackersto clone and remotely gain
control of certain SIM cards. Those vulnerabilities were
pointed out in July. While the German cryp-
tologist criticized carriersfor failing to implement
technology to protect cus-tomers from surveillance aswell as fraud, he said he does
not think they did so underpressure from spy agencies.
I couldnt imagine it is
complicity. I think it is negli-gence, he said. I dont wantto believe in a worldwide
conspiracy across all world-
wide network operators. Ithink it is individual lazi-ness and priority on networkspeed and network coverageand not security.
A spokeswoman for theGSM Association, which
represents about 800 mo-bile operators worldwide, said she could not comment
on Nohls criticism beforeseeing his presentation onthe topic at the Chaos Com-
munications Congress inHamburg, Europes biggest
annual conference on hack-ing, security and privacy
issues.Nohl uncovered the
issue while working on aproject known as the GSMSecurity Map, which evalu-
ates security of mobile opera-
tors around the globe. Themap, which can be found
at www.gsmmap.org , ispartially funded with a grantfrom the US governments
Open Technology Fund,according to Nohl.
None of the carrierssurveyed had implementedmeasures for thwarting a
method that allows the NSA
to eavesdrop on most mo-bile calls by unscrambling
a widely used encryptiontechnology known as A5/1,Nohl said.Reuters

4G handshake a giant leap
for beidou serviceBEIJING, 29 Dec While
newly licensed 4G serviceswill speed up Chinas mobile
networks, navigation expertssaid the speed will openthe way for a major leap inelectronic navigation using
Chinas homegrown Beidousatellite system.
A modern information
system needs three parts the navigation system to pro-vide timing and positioning
services, the communicationsystem to transfer informa-tion and the computing
system for data processing, said Li Changjiang, chief
commander of the Beidou
system.4G will help promote
the use of the Beidou sys-tem, he said.
The government granted
4G (or fourth generation)
high-speed network licensesto the countrys top threetelecom carriers in early De-
cember. The networks, whichwill extend to 340 cities by2014, are immensely fasterthan the previous generationof mobile technology.
The 4G networks willaccelerate data transfer, and thus broaden the use of
navigation services, Li said. One example is the use
of navigation satellites to
monitor vehicle ow on aparticular stretch of highway
or on a city street. In the past, networks
overloaded easily in high-trafc areas, but with 4G,the speed is fast enough forreal-time measurement of
trafc, he said.Xinhua

TOKYO, 29 Dec Japanese automakers willramp up production earlynext year because theyexpect a big increase in car
purchases before a salestax hike in April, media re-ported on Sunday. ToyotaMotor Corp (7203.T) willincrease domestic outputin January-March by about10 percent compared withthis month, the Nikkeibusiness daily reported.
Toyota has alreadytold its parts suppliers thatdaily output in January-
March will total around14,000 vehicles, the Nik-kei said without citing thesource of its information.
For December the au-
tomaker had planned toproduce about 12,500 carsper day, the newspaper said.
In January, Honda Mo-tor Co (7267.T) will operatetwo of its domestic plantstwo days longer than origi-nally scheduled to meet de-mand for one of its smallermodels, the Nikkei said.
Mitsubishi MotorsCorp (7211.T) and Suzuki
Motor Corp (7269.T) willalso keep domestic pro-duction lines running threedays longer than originallyplanned in January to meet
demand for newly intro-duced sub-compact models.
Japan will raise its 5percent sales tax to 8 percentin April to help pay for ris-ing healthcare costs. The taxincrease has prompted con-sumers to bring forward pur-chases of homes, cars, otherdurable goods and luxuryitems before they becomemore expensive.Reuters

Countrys hepatitis B vaccines are safe: WHO
BEIJING, 29 Dec Chi-nas vaccines are producedand regulated in accordancewith international stand-
ards, and the hepatitis Bvaccination programme isvital in safeguarding chil-dren against the illness, ac-cording to the World HealthOrganization.
Bernhard Schwartland-er, China representativefor the international healthbody, made these pointsduring an interview with
China Dailyon Thursday.Given that the hepa-
titis B virus is still around, its important for babies to
get vaccinated, he said. The WHO Beijing of-
ce met with the National
Health and Family PlanningCommission on Thursdayto discuss the latest devel-opments surrounding inci-dents in which 11 newbornshave died after being inocu-lated against hepatitis B.
According to
Schwartlander, its difcult
to establish a causal link be-
tween the vaccines and thebabies deaths since nearlyall infants in China receivethe vaccine as part of a verysuccessful vaccination pro-gram. Statistics from thecommission showed thatmore than 16 million babieswere born in China last year, and 90 percent of them werecovered by the program thatoffers hepatitis B vaccina-tions free of charge.
Without the immu-nization coverage, theremight be a rapid increase ofthe disease, Schwartlanderwarned. China initiated the
hepatitis B vaccinations in2002 under a nationwideimmunization program thatbegan in 1978 and aims toprotect children from pre-ventable diseases.
The vaccines, whichguard against more than10 diseases, are all manu-factured domestically, saidZhao Kai, a vaccine expert
and academician with theChinese Academy of Engi-
neering.Schwartlander calledthe programme very suc-cessful, saying that hepa-titis B prevalence amongChinese children under theage of 5 is now below 1 per-cent.
But he conceded thatsome risks from the vacci-nation cannot be avoided.
According to the USCentres for Disease Controland Prevention, hepatitis Bis a very safe vaccine, andmost recipients have noproblems with it. Severeproblems are extremely
rare. Dangerous allergicreactions are believed tooccur about once in 1.1 mil-lion doses.
Medical education isimportant for the public tofully understand the benet
and risk of the vaccine, thusenabling them to make theright choice, Schwartland-er said.Reuters
Small changes in kids fast
food meal cut calories
NEWYORK, 29 Dec Changes made last year toMcDonalds Happy Mealsselections for children maybe helping kids to cut calo-ries, according to a newstudy. We were curiousto know how diners mighthave changed what theywere ordering in order tomake up for the reduction ofcalories, Andrew Hanks, one of the studys authors, toldReutersHealth.
Hanks is a post-doc-toral research associate inthe Department of AppliedEconomics and Manage-ment at Cornell Univer-sity in Ithaca, New York.
That was the componentwe were really interestedin because theres evidenceof compensation when yourcalories decrease, he said.
In addition to addingapple slices, the new Hap-py Meals contain a smallerportion of French fries andnon-fat chocolate milk wasoffered along with 1 percent-fat white milk. McDonaldsstill offers the same entrechoices for the meal fourchicken nuggets, a ham-
burger or a cheeseburger. But the change in side itemsresults in 98 fewer caloriesper meal, researchers say.
They had access totransaction records for June,July and August of 2011
and 2012 for 30 McDonaldsrestaurants located through-out the United States. Theyfound 232,424 transactionsthat included the purchaseof a Happy Meal.
They looked at wheth-er the reduction of caloriesin the new version of theHappy Meal caused con-sumers to order more ham-burgers and cheeseburgersversus the chicken nuggets, which are lower in calories.
But they found that theselection of chicken nuggetsremained the same about61 percent. More chocolatemilk was ordered, 20 per-cent compared to 16.5 per-cent before the meal change, but since it was a new of-fering, its not possible todetermine if the additionalorders were due to caloriecompensation or restaurantpromotion, they report in thejournal Obesity. More whitemilk was also ordered, risingfrom 5 percent of orders to6.5 percent, and regular softdrink orders dropped from58 percent to 52 percent.
The researchers dontknow how much of the food
was consumed, whether ornot children ate more laterto make up the difference incalories or how many of themeals were ordered by thechildren or by the parents.

Monte Paschi shareholders delay cash call, topexecutives may quit
SIENA, (Italy), 29 Dec
Italys third-biggestbank Monte dei Paschi diSiena was forced to delaya vital 3 billion euro ($4.1billion) share sale to raisecapital until mid-2014 be-cause of shareholder oppo-sition, plunging its turna-round plan into uncertainty.
The banks chairmanand its chief executive maynow resign after their planto launch the cash call inJanuary was defeated at anextraordinary shareholdermeeting on Saturday due tothe vote of Monte Paschistop shareholder.
The worlds oldestbank needs to tap inves-tors for cash to pay back4.1 billion euros in state aidit received earlier this year
and avert nationalization af-
ter being hammered by theeuro zone debt crisis andloss-making derivativestrades. The unprecedentedclash between the lendersexecutives and its mainshareholder a charitablebanking foundation withclose links to Siena politi-cians casts a pall over atough restructuring meantto revive its fortunes.
Chairman AlessandroProfumo, a strong-willedand internationally respect-ed banker who was former-ly the chief of UniCredit, said he and CEO FabrizioViola would decide in Janu-ary whether to step down.
These are decisionsone takes in cold blood andin the right place, Profumo
said at the meeting. What
I have on my mind is a 3billion euro cash call be-cause we need to pay back4 billion euros to taxpay-ers. Today this is uncertainand at risk, he told a Pressconference. Viola, sitting athis side, told reporters hewould do everything sothat the ship does not sink, but that he could not takeresponsibility for mistakesmade by others.
A board meeting isscheduled for mid-January,a bank spokesman said.Profumo and Viola hadalready secured a pool ofbanks ready to guaranteethe rights issue, but onlyif it was carried out by theend of January. They saiddelaying it would make
fundraising harder because
it would likely coincidewith a string of cash calls byother Italian and Europeanlenders triggered by a sectorhealth check, and could pre-cipitate the Tuscan banksnationalization.Reuters

Connecticut police release Newtown
massacre documentsNEWYORK, 29 Dec
Connecticut state police
released a trove of docu-
ments and video on Friday
tied to their investigationof the massacre at Sandy
Hook Elementary School
last year that killed 20
children and six adults.
The documents in-
clude footage of the
school facade, including
close-up images of bullet-
shattered windows, and
a video tour through the
cheerfully decorated homethe shooter, 20-year-old
Adam Lanza, shared with
his mother, Nancy Lanza.
The 14 December,
2012, shooting rampage in
Newtown marked one of
the deadliest gun violence
incidents in US history.Lanza, who also shot and
killed his mother before
driving to Sandy Hook and
forcing his way into the
school he once attended,
killed himself as police ar-
rived on the scene.
Twenty rst-graders,
ages 6 and 7, and six staff
members lost their lives.
The tragedy rockedthe suburban town of
27,000 people and sparked
a national debate about
school violence and access
to rearms.
Much of the material,
which was posted on the
website Cspsandyhookre-port.ct.gov, has been re-
dacted, and none of the
images that speak to the
carnage unleashed that
day are visible.
I hope that the re-
lease of this report, though
painful, will allow those
who have been affected
by it to continue in their
personal process of heal-ing, and will provide help-
ful information that can be
put to use to prevent such
tragedies in the future,
Commissioner Reuben
Bradford said in a let-
ter introducing the docu-
ments.The release comes
about a month after the
state Division of Criminal
Justice released a report
on Newtown that conclud-
ed Lanza had acted alone,
and that his motive may
never be known.
The documents offer
an eerie look into the life
of the shooter, including
an assortment of rearmsand targets riddled with
bullet marks.
One lengthy video
shows the interior of Lan-
zas spacious Newtown
home off-white couchesand chairs, brightly color-
ed rugs and framed family
photographs. Dirty dishes
are in the kitchen sink and
a telephone blinks with anew message.
In a message sent out
on Thursday, acting su-
perintendent of Newtown
public schools, John Reed,
warned families of the re-
lease and the likelihood of
media coverage surround-
ing them.

Strong earthquake shakes Cyprus
NICOSIA, 29 Dec A
strong earthquake shook
Cyprus late on Saturday
afternoon, but there were
no immediate reports of in-
juries or damage.
The tremor was felt all
over the eastern Mediterra-
nean island, especially by
people living in high-rising
buildigs.
The Cyprus Geologi-
cal Department said the
quake struck at 5:20 pm
local time (GMT1520)
and measured 5.8 on the
Richter scale.
Its epicenter was 210
kilometres north of the
capital Nicosia at a depth
of 61 kilometres under the
sea between Cyprus and
Turkey close to the city
of Antalya, where reports
said it was also felt.
Cyprus lies in a par-
ticularly active seismic
area and smaller shocks are
quite frequent. Several de-
structive quakes struck the
island in the past. In 1953,
a magnitude 6 tremor de-
stroyed several villages
in the western part of the
island, leaving 40 people
dead and injuring about
100 more.
In 1996, an even
stronger quake of magni-
tude 6.5 shook the entire
island but despite wide-
spread damage only two
people were killed and 20
injured.

Boost role of traditional
medicineBefore western medicine was introduced, tra-
ditional medicine has been handed down from
generation to generation in each and every coun-
try. Traditional medicines have been used to treat
numerous human diseases, wounds and injuries.
Every plant can be used for medicinal pur-
pose, as the saying goes. Plants have been used as
herbal medicines for healing as they have several
benecial effects on the human health. With ad-
vancement in medical treatments, use of tradition-
al medicines has become popular and production
standards have kept development. The main dif-
ference between traditional medicine and modern
medicine is that the former is required to be taken
for a long time while the latter can cure disease
quickly and recovery is usually quick. Provided
that traditional medicines are produced through
scientic methods and research ndings, it can im-
prove quality of traditional medicines and lead to
an increase in use of traditional medicines.
As most of western medicines are able to kill
viruses and bacterium that can cause disease, they
can ensure quick recovery. Potency of traditional
medicines will become effective if herbal medi-
cines meet scientic standards. As every western
medicine has some side effects, it is not suitable
for long-term use while traditional medicines are
found with low level of side effects. Thats why, sci-
entic production of herbal medicines will help en-
courage a wide use of traditional medicine drugs.

KATHMANDU,29 DecNepal has entered into anew political deadlock as
the government and thePresidents Ofce are at
odds over calling the rstmeeting of the ConstituentAssembly (CA), sourcesfrom both sides said to
Xinhua on Saturday. As per the constitu-
tional provision, the prime
minister would call the rstmeeting of CA but the Pres-
idents Ofce is saying thatconstitutional provisions
should be amended to em-power them to call the rstmeeting of CA.
Currently, there is not
the post of prime ministerin the country but InterimElection Chairman Khil Raj
Regmi who assumed powerin March for holding the
Nepal at odds over calling frst
meeting of constitution drafting bodyelection is undertaking allthe jobs of the prime min-ister.
Regmi is saying thatthe governments right to
call the rst meeting shouldnot be infringed. In 2008,then Prime Minister GirijaPrasad Koirala called the
rst meeting of CA whowas also undertaking thetasks of the head of the
state.But, the government
and the Presidents Ofcehave interpreted such tra-
dition in a different way.Government ofcials saidKoirala at that time calledthe rst meeting of CA in
the capacity of the primeminister, while ofcialsfrom the President s Ofce
say Koirala called the meet-ing as the head of the state.
Both the governmentand Presidents Ofce areholding legal consultations
on the same issue but therehas not been any agree-ment. The Presidents Of-
ce also reasons that thereis international tradition for
a president to call the rstmeeting of CA.
On Friday, AdvocateBiswas Acharya moved to
Supreme Court demandingan immediate invention toensure that the president
call the rst meeting of CA.
He said that the head of thestate should call the meet-
ing of CA as it is an interna-tional practice.
The petitioner arguedthat allowing the head ofthe government to call the
rst meeting would set awrong precedent.Xinhua

Selena Gomez suffering

LES, 29 Dec
Pop star Selena
Gomez is re-
portedly suffer-
ing from lupus,
an autoimmune
disease. She
had to cancel
several tour
dates for Asia
and Australia
to address the
disease, said a
source.
Originally,
it was reported
the 21-year old
wanted to take some time
off for herself and be with
her family, but the latest
buzz is that Gomez is suf-
fering from lupus, reports
femalerst.co.uk.
Lupus can harm the
skin, kidneys, heart, nerv-
ous system and blood cells.
Selena was reportedly
diagnosed with the disease
a couple of years ago and
she has suffered multiple
ares recently that cause
facial swelling, extreme fa-
tigue, headaches and joint
pain.
Selena has been
going full throttle the past
few years and her lupus is
really catching up with her
right now, said a source.
She knows that she
needs to take some time
to address the disease and
look after herself better if
she wants to live a full and
healthy life, the source
added.

Hollywood male stars who
impressed with their fashion
sense in 2013LOS ANGELES, 29 Dec
During 2013, there were
some Hollywood male stars
who, almost effortlessly,
grabbed eyeballs for their
fashion sense. A few of the
them are listed below:
Will Smith: Even at
the age of 45, Smith looked
good in simple silhouettes,
pops of colours and evensome sneakers.
Justin Timberlake:
The singer once known for
curly locks, straightened
his hair. The pop icon also
chose suit and tie for most
events.
Andrew Garfeld:
When not in Spiderman
superhero red and blue
suit, The Amazing Spider-
Man star looked fabulous
in casual wear. He was
often spotted in sporty jack-
ets, baseball hats and skin-ny denim.
Ryan Gosling:The
actor made the red carpet
exciting by showing up in
velvet suits, saddle shoes
as well as trousers. His eve-
ryday wardrobe also looks
cool. It is full of jackets,
vintage t-shirts and boots.
Justin Theroux:
The timeless combination
of motorcycle jackets, avia-
tor sunglasses and tattoos
can come off as cliche; but
Theroux makes it look likehes the one who invented
it. The groomed brows
complete the look.

Cardiff City caretaker man-ager David Kerslake saidhe had no plans to enter

While Tom Huddlestones
rst goal for Hull City meansa trip to the barbers for the
midelder this week, man-
ager Steve Bruce thinks hispart in Saturdays 6-0 win
over Fulham could help puthim on the plane to Brazilwith England next year.
Former ManchesterUnited stalwart Bruce strug-gled to recall a more com-
plete mideld performancethan that Huddlestone, whowas celebrating his 27th
birthday, produced in thePremier League rout at KCStadium.
The lads stood andapplauded Tom when hewalked into the dressing
room and that doesnt hap-pen often, Bruce told the
Hull Daily Mail.
I dont often pick outindividuals but I dont thinkIve witnessed a performance
as good as Ive just seen fromTom He gave a masterclass
of how to play in mideld. He had the lot: free-kicks,passing range, goals, a shot
from 40 yards. He hit thepost and the bar... hes just anoutstanding footballer, abso-
lutely outstanding.Ive been fortunate to
have played in some good
teams but I cant really
remember an individual per-formance as good as he pro-
duced today.Huddlestone, who
joined Hull from Totten-
ham Hotspur for ve millionpounds in August, vowed to
grow his hair until he broke ascoring drought dating backto April 2011 and celebrated
by having a lock cut off hisAfro on the touchline.
The famously no-non-
sense Bruce was less thanimpressed by the celebration ridiculous, he called it
but respectfully suggestedHuddlestone might be justthe sort of player England
needed in their squad for nextyears World Cup in Brazil.
Who am I to talk about
(England manager) RoyHodgsons job? he asked, before continuing: But its
going to be hot and humidand horrible conditions toplay in and you need techni-
cians.Is there anybody in the
country who plays off bothfeet like him? Week in, weekout, hes producing perfor-
mances not quite to thestandard of todays buthes a fantastic footballer
who could be one of thosethat makes the squad.
