CREIL, FRANCE (BRIDGE & AIRDROME)from the Journal of Stanley M. Claster

An easy six-hour mission to France almost turned into a disaster. Officials atMolesworth decided to only partially fill the gas tanks of the B-17s apparently to save fuelfor longer trips. The Arnold crew took off at 3:11 p.m. aboard the Bonnie B along with 37other planes. They bombed through cloud cover using the British GEE-H ground stationsto obtain the bomb release navigation position. Stanley Claster described it as a "lousybomb run" in his notes, probably because of the weather.

Afterwards, the Arnold crew encountered meager but accurate flak while flyingover Rouen. The partially filled gas tanks began to run dry while the Bonnie B was headedhome over the English Channel. Two engines conked out and the other two enginesbegan sputtering as the plane approached the English coast. Arnold headed for thenearest landing field he could find, a Polish exile fighter base located adjacent to thebeach. The captain ordered the crew to put on their Mae West life jackets in case theyhad to ditch in the water. John Surrell recalls Stanley Claster saying over the intercom,"just a few hundred more yards." Luckily, Arnold was able to land the B-17 safely on theshort runway before completely running out of gas. Just like when they landed at Nutt'sCorner, Northern Ireland, base officials had to send a fuel truck out onto the runway tosupply enough gas so Arnold could taxi off the landing area.

The crew enjoyed talking to the Polish airmen. John Surrell remembers StanleyClaster telling the Poles that the first place the Arnold team bombed was Posen, Poland.Other crew members suggested he change the subject since some of the Polishservicemen might have been from Posen. After the Bonnie B was partially refueled, thecrew flew to a nearby US bomber base at Ford. The Arnold team spent the night there, and flew back to Molesworth the next day. Official records indicate five other planes in theformation also landed at other bases in England because they ran low on fuel. AnotherB-17, with No Name, ditched in the English Channel, but the crew was rescued. Twocrewmen aboard the Paper Dollie died from injuries sustained while bailing out overSouthern England when the crew could not find a place to land before they ran out of gas.The plane crashed at Bishop's Waltham.

Mission 210 - 13

American Red Cross Clubmobile and B-17E "Phyllis" aka "Tugboat Annie" #41-9020. Assigned to 303rdBG(H) Headquarters and used for formation assembly and tow target work. The only B-17E at Molesworth.

Major Louis "Mel" Schulstad was on a short night cross country flight to Kings Cliffie, home of the 20th Fighter Group, whose P-51's protected our bomber formations. He wasaccompanied only by Capt Harry M. McDaniel who sat in the co-pilot seat. On hisdownwind landing leg he unscrewed the landing gear warning light which was minus it'sgreen shade and was causing a cockpit glare. He was making a normal landing when allfour propellers were chewing into the concrete runway. Maj Schulstad, known as "MisterSafety" in his role as operations and safety officer, in the process of lowering the aircraftflaps, had inadvertently raised the landing gear with no operative warning light. The "DumbAccident" also occurred with an inadequate crew. The embarrassing belly landingoccurred at 0037 hours in B-17E #41-9020 Phyllis.
