One Group B-17 bombed with the 351BG. The Low Group dropped 239 500-lb. M17 incendiary bomb clusters from 11,000 feet. The High Group dropped 478 100-lb. M30 G.P. bombs from 13,000 feet. One aircraft jettisoned an M17 bomb over Germany. Clouds of 6/10 to 8/10 density covered the Continent. Visual bombing of the primary target was permitted through a break in the clouds. No flak was experienced at the target. Meager and accurate flak was encountered en route. Three aircraft sustained flak battle damage. From one to five enemy fighters were observed, but there were no attacks or claims. Friendly fighter support was good. There were no casualties and all aircraft returned safely to Molesworth after 10 hours, 38 minutes of flying. 1Lt. Deane Barnes, lead ship co-pilot with Col. Travis, reported, "Some of the boys saw our bombs and said it looked pretty good. We had a break in weather over the target just long enough to make a good bomb run and get our bombs away. A few minutes later would have been bad. We didn't have any opposition at all." Capt. George Mackin, pilot of the other lead ship, said, "I had to pinch myself to believe it — 700 miles over enemy territory and not a single enemy fighter. I'm not certain how the bombing came out. We had poor visibility and a short bomb run." S/Sgt. Charles L. Heathershaw, waist gunner saw the bombing and said, "Our Group dropped their bombs right in the center of the target and the Group behind us seemed to be doing a good job, too." The ball turret gunner, Sgt. Vernon Parrish, also got a good look when the bombs were dropped." The bombs from our Group spread all over the target area when they hit," Sgt. Parrish said. "When we left, the place was a mess of smoke and dust." On this mission photographs were taken of the new part of Stalag Luft 3, the German POW camp at Sagan, Germany. 2Lt. N.B. O'Beirne was flying in #42-31340 Miss Liberty 360BS-D. The tail wheel was not properly checked prior to landing and collapsed when it hit the runway. The aircraft was badly damaged.

ELEVEN HOURS IN THE AIR— AT LOW ALTITUDES11 APRIL 1944 — MISSION #134

Ed Miller’s Memories and Recollections

Seventeen hundred miles (1,700) over enemy territory required flying time ofeleven hours. Today was the first time that the Thomas Crew lead the 360th BombSquadron. The higher up’s have finally realized that we have a top-notch crew. Thatshould be pretty clear as everybody that flew with us knew that we flew pretty damn goodformation. I say “we’ as Tommy let me fly quite a bit — we switched off every 15 minutesas I recall, especially after he had gained confidence in my ability to fly pretty goodformation.

Today the 8th Air Force put up 643 B-17s and 241 B-24s to bomb six FW-190sand Junkers assembly and components plants very deep in Central and EasternGermany. These bombers were escorted by 13 fighter groups from the 8th and 4 fightergroups from the 9th Air Force’s 3rd Division.

These targets for the 1st Air Division were Sorau, Cottus, Stettin and Arnimswalde. For the 2nd Air Division they were Oschersleben and Bernberg. And for the 3rd AirDivision were Politz, Stettin, Trostock and Arnimswalde. The 303rd Bomb Group put upa full group and two separate squadrons. The main group was lead by Captain GeorgeMackin, Commander of the 358th Bomb Squadron. 1Lt Earl N. Thomas lead the LowSquadron in aircraft #42-31060 “Poque Ma Hone” which was borrowed from anothersquadron. 1Lt LeRoy E. Daub of the 359th Bomb Squadron lead the high Squadron inaircraft #42-31483 “Bonnie B.”

Adverse weather conditions prevailed over the western part of Germany. Theenemy contrived one of his most severe and well-coordinated defenses marked by theskillful handling of a considerable number of twin engine day fighters in the Stettin areaand single engine fighters in the Hannover-Oschersleben area. Flak was moderate andgenerally accurate. 51 B-17s and 12 B-24 bombers and 16 fighters were lost. Fighterclaims were very high today as many of the German pilots wanted to fight. Claims were115 destroyed, 11 probably destroyed and 88 damaged, but 63 of those destroyed wereon the ground.

The 2nd Air Division flew a northerly route which crossed the Danish peninsula butour part of the mission followed the same route that we have taken so many times beforewhen we went to Berlin. In fact, Colonel Travis, who lead the 41st CBW CompositeGroup, reported a big river right south of Berlin to be in an overflow stage. Across thewestern part of Germany, we flew at 16,000 feet and experienced intense and accurateflak around the Hannover area, but slipped around the large concentrations of anti-aircraftbatteries for the rest of the way. Three of our aircraft received serious flak damage.

At the target the Group dropped down to 11,000 feet to bomb the F-190 assemblyplant outside of Sorau, Germany. Cloud cover was about 6/10s but the lead bombardier,1Lt Charles C. Armstrong of the 358th Bomb Squadron picked out the target and reportsfrom our gunners, who viewed the results, indicated it was pretty well covered with ourbombs.

But eleven hours, even though it was at a lower altitude, was a long time to becarrying around those heavy “flak vests.”
