DO NOT FEAR

Stanley Francis Rother was born in Oklahoma. He recognized a priestly vocation in his teens, but after five years in the seminary he was turned away. His bishop believed the best priests are not necessarily the intellectuals, but the most committed, so he enrolled Stan in another seminary where the young man studied diligently.

After ordination in 1963, Father Rother served five years in parishes before volunteering for mission work in western Guatemala.

He ministered to people's spiritual needs, learned the Tzutuhil language, and taught people to read, write, and do basic math. He built a small hospital. Right-wing elites and the military ruled Guatemala. They blamed the Church for "Civil unrest."

In 1981 beatings, tortures, and murders escalated. Yet Father Rother stayed because he believed Jesus' words, "Do not be afraid of those who kill de body but cannot kill the soul" (Matthew 10:28). He was shot by a death squad. His body lies in Oklahoma, but his heart is buried among the Tzuthhil people.

Junio 24, Celebraremos la natividad de San Juan Bautista y Junio 29, tendremos la festividad de San Pedro y San Pablo.

NO TENGAN MIEDO Stanley Francis Rother nació en Oklahoma. Reconoció ya desde la adolescencia su llamado al sacerdocio, pero después de cinco anos en el seminario lo despidieron. Mas, su obispo creía que los mejores sacerdotes no eran necesariamente los intectuales, sino los comprometidos, por eso matriculo a Stan en otro seminario donde el joven estudio diligentemente. Después de su ordenación en 1963 el padre Rother sirvió cinco anos en parroquias antes de ofrecerse para una misión en la región occidental de Guatemala. Allí atendió las necesidades espirituales de la gente, aprendió el idioma Tzutuhil, y enseno a leer y escribir, y también matemáticas básica. Construyo además un hospital pequeño. La elite derechista y los militares que gobernaban Guatemala culpaban a la Iglesia por los "disturbios civiles." En 1981las golpizas, las torturas y los asesinatos escalaron. Con todo y eso el Padre Rother se quedo porque creía en las palabras de Jesús: "No teman a los que solo pueden matar el cuerpo, pero no el alma" (Mateo 10: 28). Fue asesinado por un escuadrón de la muerte y su cuerpo yace en Oklahoma, pero su corazón fue enterrado en el pueblo de Tzutuhil. Copyright-2010- World library Publications. RREEFFLLEEXXIIOONNEEMMOOSS SSOOBBRREE LLAA PPAALLAABBRRAA DDEE DDIIOOSS "No les tengan miedo, " nos recuerda jovialmente el Evangelio de esta semana (Mateo 10: 26). Entendido; pero del dicho al hecho hay un gran trecho. "No tengan miedo a los que matan el cuerpo, pero no pueden quitar la vida" (10:28). De acuerdo; pero tenemos la tendencia a apegarnos mucho a nuestro cuerpo y abrigamos la esperanza de conservarlo por un poco más de tiempo. "No teman, pues ustedes valen más que todos los pájaros" (10:31) Pero también mas vale un pájaro en mano que cien volando. Tendemos a aferrarnos a lo que tenemos. La realidad es que la mayoría de nosotros no somos Jeremías, que dijo creer hasta el punto de alienar justo a casi todo el mundo a su alrededor. Ser como Jeremías resulta demasiado intimidante algunas veces. Dicho en breve, a nosotros nos gusta nuestro cuerpo tanto como nuestra alma y por eso dejamos que nuestros temores se interpongan en nuestros esfuerzos para llegar a ser los cristianos que deseamos ser. No obstante, el esfuerzo desmedido de Jeremías nos sale de vez en cuando. Defendemos lo que es justo sabiendo que, si no lo hacemos, tal vez nadie lo haga tampoco. Por eso decimos lo que debe decirse, quizás sin proclamarlo desde las azoteas, pero al menos desde el portal del espíritu en donde habita nuestra alma. Reflecting on God’s Word

"Fear no one," this week's Gospel blithely reminds us (Matthew 10: 26). Understood, but also easier said than done. "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul" (10:28). Okay, but we tend to grow attached to our bodies and hope to keep them a while longer. "Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows" (10:31). But also one sparrow in the hand is worth two in the bush. We tend to go with what we have. The fact is that most of us are not Jeremiah, who said what he believed even to the point of alienating just about everyone around him. To be Jeremiah can sometimes just too intimidating. In short, we like our bodies as well as our souls, and so we let our fears get in the way of being the Christians we wish to be. Nevertheless, every once in a while the Jeremiah strain in each of us show itself. We speak up for what is right, realizing that if we do not, perhaps no one else will either. And so we say what must be said, maybe not shouting it from the housetops but at least from the porch of the spirit in which our soul dwells.
