You are not experiencing Deja Vu, this month we are again proud to present 3008Docklands as our insert magazine following on from our October issue instalment. Truth be known, there were simply too many great things happening at Docklands in November that we wanted to share on a larger scale with our readers.

To begin with, Docklands will host the Chronicles of Narnia Exhibition, which is bound to draw interest and crowds from far and wide in this amazing exhibition at Waterfront City opening this November and on throughout summer.

With the council elections now over, Lord Mayor Robert Doyle and Deputy Lord Mayor Susan Riley are keen to get on with implementing their plans for the Docklands Precinct and to see Docklands continue to grow into a premier part of Melbourne to live and work at and a wonderful tourist destination attraction for local and international visitors.

On the topic of working towards promoting Docklands, we welcome Clive Dwyer as the newly elected Chairperson for Destination Docklands. Clive brings extensive experience in tourism, events, and business development and will no doubt contribute, along with the rest of the team at Destination Docklands, to the bright future of Docklands.

Cadel is back on his bike for the race that stops Docklands as Suit Up and Ride takes to Waterfront City again this month with funds raised supporting the vital work of Orygen Youth Health Research Centre and their range of programs aimed at assisting young people affected by mental illness. It’s a fun event and an annual favourite for an important cause.

Just 8 weeks to Christmas so rather than scramble around in traffi c or frustrated in busy shopping centres why not take a stroll along Harbour Esplanade on Friday afternoons from late November for Docklands Twilight Market – make a night of it - a spot of shopping, music, interesting wares and literally a hop, skip and or jump away from some of the best dining and after work venues in Melbourne.

SThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition is opening at Waterfront City this November.

This state-of-the-art entertainment and educational experience offers visitors the opportunity to tour scenes from the famed literary world of Narnia. Through authentic costumes, props and set dressings from the magical Narnia fi lms, visitors will enter a three-dimensional world that combines the wonders of science with aspects of fantasy.

Once inside The Chronicles of Narnia Exhibition, visitors will encounter several fun, hands-on elements including:

• A replica of the White Witch’s Throne where visitors can sit and feel the chill of the icy throne. A nearby display describes the impact of climate change on our planet and investigates whether our planet could be frozen for 100 years like the world of Narnia.

• An interactive frozen waterfall, icy to the touch, with a display on the science behind why water freezes.

• A model of King Miraz’s Castle, which offers visitors the opportunity to build an arch and learn about the principles of its design and structure.

• An area highlighting the mythical creatures of Narnia, which allows visitors to create their own creatures featured in the fi lms.

• A large-scale map of Narnia’s world, which highlights locations from the famous story.

• A metal armour suit and swords that can be touched and lifted to experience their tremendous weight.

• A working catapult that demonstrates how the medieval device can hurl an object great distances.

Visitors will also come face-to-face with characters and

creatures from Narnia, including Reepicheep, a Minotaur, and Centaurs as well as costumes of key characters, including the White Witch and the Pevensie children. A recreation of C.S. Lewis’ study, where he wrote the Narnia adventures, is also shown in the exhibition.

In their fi rst joint venture, Charter Hall and Flagship Property Holdings revealed plans in October for the launch of 685 La Trobe Street, Melbourne.

Situated on the last remaining offi ce development site available in the Dockland’s Stadium Precinct, the 12-storey offi ce building has received

development approval and is designed by award winning architects Bates Smart

The highly effi cient, 37,000sqm A-grade offi ce building boasts 3,300sqm fl oor plates, the largest of any readily available offi ce building in Docklands while the signature feature of 685 La Trobe is its butterfl y-shaped design which creates two landscaped plazas, two generous wings of offi ce space and a large central hub space that unites the building.

Some of the many benefi ts of Bates Smart’s plan are the large, effi cient fl oor plates which can be divisible into neighbourhood working areas as typifi ed in activity-based workspaces, to encourage collaboration and productivity. There is also increased access to natural light across each fl oor and an increase in the number of highly sought after corners – eight

rather than the standard four.

The building’s façade makes clever use of different glass textures and fi nishes, with fl ashes of brushed aluminium vertical spandrels providing a clever contrast.

Located 500m from Southern Cross Station, 685 La Trobe is directly linked to Melbourne’s major transport hub via the Etihad Stadium Concourse, as well as having a tram stop at its doorstep on La Trobe Street. A 1,100sqm retail space at ground fl oor is expected to attract strong interest from potential

food and beverage tenants, providing even greater amenity and activation to the popular stadium precinct.

The building has been designed to meet 5 star Green Star and 5 star NABERS Energy ratings and comprises 137 car spaces, a dedicated mezzanine for 250 bicycles and associated change facilities with potential for a bike retail facility adjacent to the bike storage and end-of-trip facilities.

Tour de France champion, Cadel Evans and cycling legend Matt Goss will be suiting up again this year for Melbourne’s quirkiest cycling event: Suit Up and Ride.

At Suit Up and Ride, teams of fi ve compete in a time trial sprint on Melbourne Bike Share bikes, around a short course at Waterfront City in the Docklands, the catch is they must wear their suit, or regular offi ce attire or outlandish team outfi ts.

In the past there have been miners on bikes, nurses, fi remen, advertising spin doctors in white coats, a team in recycled boxes and real estate agents bedecked in auction fl ags! The course is a short, fl at 1Km along New Quay at the Docklands-so you don’t need to be a lycra-clad speed demon to participate! There are great prizes for best dressed!

Mark Seymour of Hunters and Collectors

fame will be entertaining the crowd after the racing.

Suit Up and Riders will also be able to take home their very own free Tour de France personalised cycling photo of them “fake leading” the peloton thanks to a green screen set up in the Frank Health Insurance marquee.

Over the last two years Suit Up & Ride has raised over $200,000 making it a vital source of funding for Orygen Youth Health Research Centre (OYHRC) which is led by 2010 Australian of the Year, Professor Patrick McGorry AO.

Critically it allows OYHRC to implement programs and provide support for young Australians most in need. The money raised by Suit Up and Ride so far has been directly responsible for the following:

• Funding research into treatment options for young people, with regards to suicide prevention

• Funding research into trauma and e-youth mental health initiatives

• Directly supporting the development of the Family Peer Support Program that helps families with a newly diagnosed son or daughter

• Vital support for the vocation and social recovery research project into the benefi ts of returning to work or education, as research has found that having a job is associated with a range of great health and life outcomes for young people recovering from a mental illness.

The Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development, Wendy Lovell, visited Gowrie Victoria’s Harbour Family and Children’s Centre at Victoria Harbour on Friday 19 October to learn about the current Braille program the centre undertakes for Micah Cheung.

Micah came to the program with a visual impairment. At the time, Gowrie Victoria didn’t have the facilities or program to support a visually impaired child. With the assistance and infl uence from Vision Australia, and excellent commitment from Gowrie Victoria management, a strategy and program was developed to support, include and educate Micah.

The children in the centre have also embraced the program, and it forms part of the education curriculum that centre manager Michelle Gujer encourages: “We wanted to include this as part of what we do and Vision Australia have supported us to make Micah’s experience a happy one, where he is included and considered all along the way.”

For Vision Australia Early Childhood Educator, Sue Harley, Gowrie Victoria stands out in the sector: “This is the only centre that has embraced true inclusion. They demonstrate how important literacy and numeracy is in early childhood education.”

For The Harbour Family and Children’s Centre’s Pedagogical Leader, Cerri May, “The children have embraced the Braille program. Children don’t discriminate, or lower expectations. Adults do that. It has been as important to education the employees as much as the children. And it can be simply about not leaving things lying around.”

The Minister said of the program: “Gowrie Victoria are doing a fantastic job here with Micah and they are doing a great job with his education.”

Maria Vesterinen, originally from Finland moved to Melbourne in 2009 and for the past two years has made Docklands her home with her partner.

Maria came to Melbourne travelling on a working holiday visa and was fortunate to get accepted to Monash University where she is currently a 3rd year Bachelor of Fine Arts student

Maria will make her artistic debut at Louey & Lane Gallery where her exhibition, Unlocked features photographic works and sculptures and is now open to the public. “The exhibition explores the childlike wonder we all used to have about the world and prompts us to still have that same excitement in search for new knowledge. The imagery used is easy to relate to and thus makes the approach to the work smoother” said Maria

The photos and the sculptures are highly charged with nostalgic symbolism which reference secrets and hidden knowledge. “The works promote strengthening ones knowledge of the world, without forgetting the fun and wonder the journey for new answers can be” adds Maria.

Exhibition until 21 November
