It is been a great pleasure for me personally to work on this issue of 3002East Melbourne, joining our MagMedia line up of insert magazines for the first time and hopefully on a permanent basis.

Growing up in Kew, East Melbourne was a gateway to the city for me and many a school excursion and weekend was spent in the beautiful Fitzroy Gardens. East Melbourne holds many memories for me, some of my happiest and saddest life changing moments occurred in East Melbourne -the birth of my children and passing of my father.

In putting this issue together I spent some time driving and walking around the suburb for hours, reminiscing about the familiar and discovering the new. It doesn’t take long to fall in love with this beautiful part of Melbourne, the lush greenery, beautiful terrace houses, wide streets and abundance of open public space.

To keep this area as beautiful into the future it takes carefully considered forward urban planning. The City of Melbourne is currently developing the plan for East Melbourne’s Urban Forest and they want your feedback.

How do you want your streetscape to look in the future, now is the time to join the conversation at workshop to be held at East Melbourne Library on April 6.

For this first issue I spoke with State Member for Melbourne, Jennifer Kanis. Not quite a year into her new role in Parliament, after serving as a councillor for the City of Melbourne, I wanted to ask Jennifer her views on East Melbourne and give our readers an opportunity to get to know more about the person representing the interests of residents and businesses in East Melbourne.

For a bit of fun, we have included a landmark quiz to test your knowledge of how well you know East Melbourne. Any long term residents shouldn’t have too hard a time deciphering what and where.

I hope you enjoy our first insert issue. We warmly welcome your feedback and hearing about the interesting people and places in your neighbourhood.

By Lisa quittnerFor our first personality profile in 3002East Melbourne we thought Jennifer Kanis, your elected state Member for Melbourne who represents the interests of East Melbourne was a good place to start.

how have you found the transition from City of Melbourne Councillor to Member for Melbourne in the victorian Legislative assembly as you approach your first year in the position?I am three quarters of the way through my first year as the state Member for Melbourne and what a year it has been! I have been busy learning the ropes of the Victorian Parliament. Council was a good background, but council meetings were very polite compared to the very robust question time in Parliament.

one of the great things about being a member of parliament is that I am able to devote all of my time to my work as a representative. I now have much more time to meet with people, discuss issues with them and help them resolve problems. this is very useful in determining what policies the Victorian labor Party will take to the next election.

in your opinion what are the current issues facing east Melbourne residents and businesses?the matters that people raise with me are maintenance of the area’s parks

and gardens, heritage protection, safety and security, traffic and parking and access to services – particularly for families and seniors.

What are your favourite aspects of east Melbourne?I love it that when you are in East Melbourne you might be in the middle of a busy city but you feel like you are in a very peaceful place. the area has a wonderful sense of community.

In East Melbourne and Parkville, the electorate of Melbourne has two of the most beautiful Victorian streetscapes. I want to ensure that future generations are able to enjoy the physical beauty that is East Melbourne.

of course you cannot think of East Melbourne without thinking about the parks and gardens. one of my favourite family memories is coming to church in East Melbourne on a sunday morning and then playing in the Fitzroy Gardens afterwards – the tudor Village and Fairy tree hold very special memories for me and I now take our young son to visit.

how are you as the state Member supporting the east Melbourne and Jolimont community? My office is always available if people want to drop in, call or email. If I am not in, my staff can help. We help people with individual issues around government matters or

government departments. We also work with community groups to support their activities. I always tell people to “just ask” – whether it is a complex problem or a simple request, we are always happy to help.

With a young family, how do you find balancing public life with family life?I think for all families life is a juggling act – most of the time you catch the balls and that is fun and rewarding, but occasionally you drop them. the trick is to get the balls back in the air and keep juggling.

i believe you have a birthday coming up in april, how do you intend on celebrating?Well, my birthday is on a sitting week so I will spend the actual day in Parliament with my colleagues. My birthday celebrations tend to be quite low key and I will celebrate by sharing a meal with family and friends.

Melbourne’s esteemed Fitzroy Gardens has been recognised amongst the world’s best, becoming one of 12 sites across Australia and New Zealand to receive the prestigious Green Flag Award.

The Green Flag Award scheme, recognised internationally, assesses parks for their safety, quality of facilities, management of the environment, historical features and community involvement.

Environment Portfolio Chair Councillor Arron Wood said he was delighted that the Fitzroy Gardens had been recognised through this award.

“The Fitzroy Gardens are loved by many and we are proud to see this treasured green space formally recognised. They contain

some of our oldest and most magnificent trees, and are also home to the historic Cooks’ Cottage and the Conservatory with its impressive indoor floral displays,” Cr Wood said.

“More than 2.5 million people visit the Fitzroy Gardens every year. Whether it’s to take a stroll through the gardens, enjoy a picnic, read a book under a tree or to play, the gardens are a wonderful space for Melburnians and visitors to enjoy right in the middle of our busy city.”

Spread across 26 hectares in East Melbourne, the Fitzroy Gardens also feature the River God Fountain and Dolphin Fountain, the Fairies’ Tree, a model Tudor Village and a number of other statues and structures.

Cr Wood said while the gardens had an impressive historic value, Council was also aware of the need to ensure the gardens were able to adapt to a changing climate.

“Last year, in partnership with the Australian Government, we started work on a stormwater project in Fitzroy Gardens that will provide almost 70 million litres of recycled water every year.

“Once completed, a new depot, visitor centre and garden area will also be created above the stormwater tank that park users will be able to enjoy.”

As part of this award, a green flag has been raised adjacent to the Propagator’s Cottage, near the Wellington Parade and Lansdowne Street entry and will remain there until January 2014.

Over the next three years, the City of Melbourne will develop plans for the urban forest in nine precincts, starting with Carlton, East Melbourne, South Yarra and the central city in 2013.

They want the community to get involved. While we know the city’s Urban Forest Strategy provides a robust framework for the evolution and longevity of our

urban forest, but what will this mean for the streets in your area?

Come along to the East Melbourne Urban Forest workshop this April, lunch will be provided and children (5-12yrs) will be able to participate in a special set of consultation activities. You can also join the conversation forum online or post your comments on the Urban Forest map.

Improved bike lanes on Clarendon Street between Victoria Parade and Wellington Parade in East Melbourne are now operational.

The new lanes connect the Albert Street bike route and off-road paths around the MCG and the Yarra Trail.

The lanes provide cyclists with a safer distance from both moving and parked cars. This has been measured to be very effective in encouraging cyclists to ride outside the car-dooring zone.

Back in her high school days Kerri Gravina really looked forward to visits to the hair salon. At 17 she discovered a hairdresser that could cut and colour her hair to suit her personality and look, returning to school the next day Kerri noticed the boys were turning their heads as she walked by and at that point a light bulb went off and the start of a career as a hair stylist and colourist began.

“I suddenly realised that our hair has a dramatic effect on the way we look and how we feel about ourselves, I had so much confidence with my new look and it changed the way I saw myself. People would comment that I was looking really great and the next minute all my friends started going to my hairdresser too!”

Opening her own salon has come with its fair share of highs and hurdles, during the first two years of starting

her own business Kerri found that transforming great ideas into practical and successful outcomes requires a lot of hard work. “I look back at my first year and I was running on pure adrenalin, but would I do it all again? Absolutely, in a heartbeat” says Kerri.

Kerri specifically chose East Melbourne to open her Kerri Gravina Salon in the heart of Tribeca for the peaceful surrounds and ideal central location.

“It’s a pocket of paradise, being located in the Tribeca complex in the heart of East Melbourne I saw an opportunity to start a great business in an area where a hair salon was just about the only thing missing. Our salon attracts people from all walks of life with a large percentage of our clients being patients at the many surrounding hospitals” adds Kerri.

Kerri’s philosophy for the salon is simple, “Look amazing, feel amazing

-we want all of our clients leaving feeling great and gorgeous! My salon is not just about hairdressing it’s about caring for our guests. We take a more personal approach because our clients are like our friends”.

As Kerri explains, getting the right cut and colour is so important to compliment your skin tone and enhance your best features and personality. A quality service and total approach is vital for keeping satisfied clients and attracting new clients.

“Your hair should look beautiful and be easy to manage, we specialise in technical cuts that demand perfection and that’s not just for the ladies, we look after our male clientele with fabulous barbering using clean blades and quality Aveda grooming creams to make the men feel special and pampered too” said Kerri

Kerri is most complimentary when it comes to her star senior stylist Kaitlin.

“Kaitlin has a unique and funky edge, her creative colour work along with her freehand baliage work and scrunching techniques are works of art.”
