58 3.0 List of Heritage Items Significantly Modified Since September - October 1984 The following structures are listed in Survey Study of the First , Second and Third Settlements on Norfolk Island by Robert V J P Varman for the Australian Heritage Commission. 1985. (Survey period September-October 1984). This list is not comprehensive, as all sites listed in the 1985 report could not be visited or examined in detail, though a comprehensive update of the 1985 report is well overdue. The numbering system used in the 1985 report is here retained, so that reference can be made to the report if more details of the site are required. 1984 - 1997 The following begin with the number as found in the Varman Survey followed by the allotment / subdivision number, the name of the place and then what has happened to the place since 1984: 1 (Lot 1d) Shepherd's Hut. The remains of the 'Shepherd's Hut' were eventually located and partially recorded but the remains have since been covered by soil - spoils from the nearby basalt quarry. 6 (Lot Sa) Lower Garden. Rank weed growth and the nearby quarry have had a detrimental impact on this site. One recommendation for the disposal of quarry spoils nominates this as a likely area for the purpose. 16 (Lot 8j) Helen Lindsay's House. Demolished. 42 (Lot 13b) Kitty Burgess' House (formerly Renny Young's). Partially rebuilt. 45 (Lot 14h) Pa Chris's House (Selwyn Christian's House). Rebuilt except for the frame and roof. 56 (Lot 17c) Shunna Quintal's House. Partly modified, or modernized. 57 (Lot 18b) Nobby Buffett's House. Almost completely derelict. 69 (Lot 24g) New Rawson Hall. Modernized (aluminium windows).

3.0 List of Heritage Items Significantly Modified Since September - October 1984

The following structures are listed in Survey Study of the First, Second and Third Settlements on Norfolk Island by Robert V J P Varman for the Australian Heritage Commission. 1985. (Survey period September-October 1984).

This list is not comprehensive, as all sites listed in the 1985 report could not be visited or examined in detail, though a comprehensive update of the 1985 report is well overdue.

The numbering system used in the 1985 report is here retained, so that reference can be made to the report if more details of the site are required.

1984 - 1997

The following begin with the number as found in the Varman Survey followed by the allotment/ subdivision number, the name of the place and then what has happened to the place since 1984:

1 (Lot 1d) Shepherd's Hut. The remains of the 'Shepherd's Hut' were eventually located and partially recorded but the remains have since been covered by soil - spoils from the nearby basalt quarry.

81 (Lot 29c) Cottage. Demolished. Part of the frame and cladding is in the Pier Store Museum at Kingston.

110 (Lot 42k) Aunt Els' 'Oleander'. Demolished.

116 (Lot 46il1) Bertie Jules Christian's House. Demolished but the chimney survives.

121 (Lot 50h1) Allendale. Burned down.

156 (Lot 66h) Aunty Wick's House. Modernized.

169 (Lot 76b) C.C.R. Nobbs' Store. Burned down.

170 (Lot 76b) 'Moira'. Virtually rebuilt.

171-173 (Lot 76b) 'Moira' Outbuildings. Site access restricted. Some structures appear to have been demolished.

206 (Lot 87c) 'Orange Grove', 'Ikey Bobs' House. Blew down in a storm.

211 (Lot 93a) Aunt Liz's House (Alfred Nobbs'). Stripped to the core about 9 years ago.

202 (Lot 93b2) Willy Netty's House. Demolished.

217 (Lot 97d) 'Sunhaven'. Largely rebuilt.

228 (Lot 113p) 'Everett's'. Rebuilt using the frame of the old house.

236 (Lot 146a) Melanesian Mission Grounds. Many trees have died and several are on the way out. Meeting Hall built behind the Chapel. Part of the grounds cleared.

238 (Lot 146b) Melanesian Mission Cemetery. Archaeology of the site compromised by careless clearing and a memorial placed in the centre of the site. Pre-1919 remnant plantings in danger.

276 (Lot 32d or 32L) Ivy House Site. A new house has been built over the site.

4.0 'Pitcairner' Places Recommended for Nomination for Inclusion to the National Estate

The following places are recommended for nomination for inclusion to the National Estate. Each house should be considered of high significance in regard to historical association with Pitcairner personalities and in the way the places demonstrate building techniques and influences during the early phases of the Third Settlement from 1856 to about 1920. Documentation is to be found in the Survey Study of the First, Second and Third Settlements on Norfolk Island by Robert V J P Varman.
