The Groshell’s are an energetic family with 5 Children.
Our 2 oldest girls are on the autism spectrum with Gentry, (wearing the headphones
below) most affected and living in a group home.
In our personal story...
Gentry leads the way!
She is an amazing young woman, an accomplished artist and an
inspiration. We have gained the most when we let Gentry teach us
and stopped trying to “fix” her.
… saying people with autism are “canaries in the
coal mine” is to say that the problems faced by people with autism are
part of a class of problems that will affect more and more people if present trends of pollution and
chronic disease continue. Autism thus becomes a
wake-up call.

Autism as toxic overload… A
leading indicator
Current Situation Overview1. Autism is extensive and growing at an epidemic rate.
2. People with autism are often considered retarded, underestimated & undervalued as human beings.
3. Group homes are a viable option but their current culture is less than ideal and lacks heart
4. Innovative technologies and treatments are evolving but are often not communicated quickly or fully.
5. Healthy food is an influential factor in treatment not being utilized.
6. Future government funding for autism and group homes is likely not sustainable.
7. All of these factors suggest the need for a new sustainable business model for autism treatment.
With The Exploding Cost and Incidence of AutismGovernment Funding Is Likely Not Sustainable

“Peace of Heart” plans to facilitate the needed change
WE BELIEVE...
Our prototype model has not only evolved from today’s economic changes with pressure on
decreased funding and federal revenues for persons with disabilities but the basic idea that “true
growth” of the individual, community and society at large comes not from a consumer mentality
but when we reach out to give back to those in need.
We believe the cooperation (not competition) is the very basic and survival of society. By
practicing and maintaining a self-sustaining principles, POHC can help maintain and secure a bright
future for those living with autism through our Art and Farm Programs.
Today, we can plan for tomorrow by making ethical decisions to take responsibility for our own
existence and to help those with special needs in our society. By supporting POHC Foundation, you
can help provide access to resources necessary that offer a “meaningful life” and personal growth
for those less fortunate.
We believe that, in giving, you truly receive the most. We encourage all of our donors to get to
know the persons we serve. Living life in mutual exchange is truly the most meaningful existence of
all.
Our vision is accomplished throughBuilding Peace of Heart Community
This prototype group home experience that will feature
•
Person centered planning Education and meaningful life opportunities Access to full communication Community and family support systems Environmentally sustainable food & practices
Gentry and her 5 friends are just the beginning! This sustainable model will be replicated, multiplying its impact!
Peace of Heart Community upholds the "heart" of
individuals with autism through its pillars of community and
sustainability, creating a sense of belonging. We believe the
whole person is nurtured through communication, faith,
support and enrichment opportunities including our art and
farm programs.

Person Centered: To Deliver Meaningful Life Options
• Meaningful life is finding love, happiness, a voice and value through development of talents and skills.
• Toward that end we will implement 4 strategies:
– Belonging
– Behavior
– Vocational coaching
– An alternative group home culture
The “Heart” Person centered Planning
Person Centered PlanningStrategy 1: Belonging
• A sense of belonging will be fostered by mutual relationships of support and growth as well as living in a safe, healthy, supportive home environment surrounded by the calming effects of nature.
• As part of this strategy we will:- Presume competence- Provide ample opportunities to be in nature- Foster a sense of belonging through relationships and through nurturing spiritual growth- Offer local healthy food, including from our own garden- Encourage an atmosphere of communication where all voices are expressed /validated to promote positive change.
Person Centered PlanningStrategy 2: Behavior
We will achieve a reduction in undesirable behavior by:
– Providing behavior focused services to ensure that appropriate supports are put into action
– Implementing behavior plans/monitoring that lead to successful reduction in undesirable behaviors
– Teaching replacement behaviors
– Undesirable behavior can be a direct result of anxiety from the inability to speak and communicate.
– As part of our program we will support best practices in typing/teaching so that every resident has a voice.
Person Centered Planning To Deliver Meaningful Life Options
The “Heart” Person centered Planning
Unlocking their Voices through Typing
“People treat me different when they know I’m the painter” – Gentry, 20
“I want you to see me & not my autism” – Jacob, 12
“Thank you for releasing my voice” – Lanier, 18
“I get to finally share a dire part of my life” – Hunter, 8
“Autism is silent hell””
Person Centered PlanningStrategy 3: Vocational Coaching
• We will employ a vocational coach to break down chores and vocational skills into small increments that can be easily repeated so that:
- Staff can be easily taught - Skills can be generalized to new settings
• Skills will include, but are not limited to: household chores, cooking, farming and gardening techniques as well as animal care.
Person Centered PlanningStrategy 4: Alternative Group Home Culture
Current Group Home Culture Person Centered Planning
• Low interaction with others
• Overstimulation to light, sound, smell, etc.
• Little immersion into society
• Programmed staff involvement
• Controlled environment with limited on-site family presence
• Traditional food sourcing and menus
• Little effort to educate the public/community on autism
• Integration vs. isolation
• Calming exposure to nature, plants, animals and more.
• Managed, safe social exposure
• More personalized staff support
• Regular opportunities for family interaction
• Healthier food options with less chemicals & local sourcing
• Structured engagement & education of the community
Community Centered Planning
– Community Centered planning focuses on forging strong partnerships and collaborations on site, locally, and as a model for the autistic community nationwide.
– This is the soul of our organization and engages family and community to develop support options which include:- High-needs autistic adults being welcomed, understood and safe.- A loving, supportive home base from which they can access the community- A network of mutual support systems where families help families and neighbors help neighbors

Definition of Sustainable Development:
“Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs.”
Our Common Future – Report by Brundtland Commission 1987
Sustainability Centered Planning
Design overall site plan & gardens using sustainable
permaculture design principles
Permaculture has to do with “Permanent Culture” and “Permanent Agriculture,” growing complementary plants together, building the quality and richness of the soil and producing healthy food.
Permaculture is an overall design practice, but is most commonly related to fresh, healthy food and farming in the absence of harmful chemicals.
The Green PersonSustainability Planning
Sustainability Centered Planning:Triple Bottom Line
The definition on sustainable development relates mainly to the environment. But the meaning of “sustainability” now is much broader and is often simplistically stated as a TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE…“People, Planet and Profit.”
• “People”: Refers to listening to and engaging residents, employees, the community and the supply chain with empathy, fairness and innovation. That includes; respect, equality, safety, access to healthy food and more.
• “Planet”: Relates to energy, water, waste, purchasing, packaging, pollution, global warming and much more.
• “Profit”: Notes the importance of ethical, transparent leadership to gain financial stability so that you can continue to exist as a company and add value to the economy, consumers, stakeholders, shareholders and stable funding.
Peace of Heart Farm is a 2.5 acre organic garden located on 2 properties in Palm Valley, FL. The primary farm is located in front of the future residential home for 6 young women with autism, Peace of Heart Home (POHH). It is our mission to provide healthy, sustainable food for our residents, local restaurants, and farmer’s market venues. Proceeds from sales to our community will help support our vision of sustainability for POHH.
Residents of Peace of Heart Home will have the opportunity to learn vital gardening skills while being close to the calming effects of nature. In addition, delivering our goods to restaurants and featuring our produce at local farmer’s markets will provide much needed inclusionary opportunities where our local community can interact with persons with autism in a positive way.
Our Organic Garden will provide our Peace of Heart Family, local businesses and our community with fresh, nutritious produce.

Peace of Heart Farm welcomes and values participation from our community. Volunteering at the farm gives our neighbors the opportunity to learn about organic gardening, provides a much needed service for the farm, and promotes reverse inclusion opportunities where persons with and without autism can work side by side. Monthly workshops will be provided on such topics as permaculture, mushroom farming and organic gardening to promote and educate people on the value of sustainability.

Financials• The basic concept in this prototype approach is to:
– Fight to secure government funding for as long as possible– Launch an aggressive fundraising initiative immediately to finance project
infrastructure and marketing and to create an endowment for the future.– Develop revenue streams to include the Home, Farm, Outreach, and Art
• Financial Detail:
– Total revenue is $550,000 per year throughout the planning horizon– With Government funding, our stand alone Group Home is profitable from day 1– As Government contributions are reduced our private funding/endowment
alternative will be firmly in place – Fundraising for endowment + donations is significant at $250 k in year 2 and
$750k in year 12 – Revenue from art, jewelry, clothing and garden grows from $5k in year 1 to over
$50k in year 12

Deeply Impacting Lives• Gentry - first vocal sounds, professional artist
• Lanier - presenting at national conferences
• Britton - connecting with friends at Special Nation
• Kayla - slept through the night as result of Blessing
Meet BrittonBritton is a young man from Texas. His parents are autism warrior parents. From a stroke as a child due to a vaccine injury to abuse and an arrest later in life...their story horrifies. But in the horror this is HOPE. Britton’s Doctor, a local in Ponte Vedra, tells them about the typing instructor. They fly her out to see them and they take steps toward releasing his voice.
I compare this rebirth to physically giving birth. There are many emotions involved. Joy and pain being the primary ones. Struggle and longing being right up there on the list!
Britton has no community in Texas as we do here. He types on day that he wants to go on an adventure. His mother asks where and he types that he wants to see his friends at Special Nation. These are the friends he only met once at an all-day training followed by a social get-together.
I want to go in 62 days, he types. Sixty two days? Why, thought his mother. She grabbed her calendar. That was his birthday. The issue was, the church was not meeting that Wednesday as it was the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving.
His Mom sent word of Britton’s request to our group. Instantly, people began saying they would come to see Britton. The day came and a crowd had gathered...one our largest. Britton’s anxiety was great. His father was locked head to head with him in the parking lot much like to ram’s fighting would be. Our group gathered. I was praying. Before we began the lesson, I began praying for Britton. I began praying PEACE will overtake him. After the prayer, he instantly walked in and sat down. He stayed for the whole lesson and we gathered to give him a cupcake with candles and sing happy birthday to him.
Meet KaylaKayla is a young woman with non-verbal autism who is no longer a teenager. She goes weeks at a time with no sleep...ever. No sleep at night no naps during the day. This means her family does not sleep hardly at all as Kayla frequently pounds on her door throughout the night. Kayla’s mother is a woman of prayer and believer of hope. One day she heard of a therapist who teaches non-verbal persons with autism to type. She pulled her aside and asked her to work with her daughter. The therapist eagerly agreed and they have started sessions together. Immediately, this teacher told Kayla’s mother about a church that met weekly for a special needs youth group. The mother had no idea a place like this existed. A place where persons like her daughter were taught a lesson and had social time together where they danced and interacted with others their age both like them and those who understood their beauty. They stoned joined our group: Special Nation. It was at this group that Kayla jumped up at the end of a lesson to help give the “blessing” from Numbers 6:22-27. The past few weeks Kayla had observed me (the bible teacher) and my daughter, Gentry (a young woman very much like herself) raise our arms and give a blessing over the group. This time Kayla joined us...smiling, raising her arms and stomping her feet. It was clear that I was a conduit for their voices. I could not have been more honored.
Later that week Kayla’s mother told me she found a decorative sign with the blessing on it and put it over Kayla’s bed. She said Kayla pulled her to the room and (with much intention) pointed directly at the sign. I told her mother to pray the blessing with and over Kayla each night as part of her bedtime routine. Much to this mother’s delight, Kayla slept through the night that night!
Although Kayla still lacks the sleep her body really needs...she is having her spirit ministered to. She has found a place of belonging and there she radiates. She is understand and talked to as like any other person
her age...as if she understands, matters, and is loved. This is what community is.
A Message From AmyThe “Poor in Spirit” - “Pure, unspoiled religion, in the eyes of God our Father is this: to come to the help of orphans and widows when they need it, and keeping from the enticements of the system.” - James 1:27
Who are orphans and widows? I propose they are ALL who are poor in spirit. Those whose attachments to this world in the form of security has been ripped from them. For these are the persons whose is the “Kingdom of heaven(Matt. 5:3).” Why does God call us into union with the poor? Why was Jesus central mission lived out with the “poor in spirit”?
I believe it is because they possess a beauty that those of us who are “in control” have lost. They have a faith that is active and alive. They already come with open hands and an open heart. They are not afraid to receive. They are already in an “inferior” position. They know they have a need and are not afraid of that need nor are they able to hide their need. They can not compete or control. They do not look at others as inferior or superior to themselves. They simply are. They emulate love and non-judgment.
So it is with persons with autism. Their bodies are victims to their shattered sensory systems. Their bodies do not tell the story of their intelligence. Every day, hour and minute, they are assessed as the sum total of their behaviors and labeled mentally inept. Behaviors that can destroy, harm self or others, and embarrass (one young communicator typed, “autism is not polite”). Behaviors that appear nonsensical to the observer but hold a very functional purpose to the person performing them for, without this behavior, true insanity would take over. Stimulatory behavior (repetitive behavior that is without function to most) is what non-verbal persons with autism type help them cope in a world that overwhelms them. This behavior is functional. There is no more essential of a function that to survive.
This is Special Nation. This is the Poor In Spirit. This is what my spirit needs. This is why we are building Peace of Heart Community. It is not the physical building that makes the community (though we need it for life to happen)...it is the heart of the person with autism that makes our community a better place to be!
