• In 2015 alone, they published 19 films.• These figures display Blumhouses predominant

power and influence in the horror film industry. Thus by choosing these as our distributer we will be putting Enslaved in perfect hands as Blumhouse know how to market and distribute their products to the right kind of audience. Enslaved would have a blanket distribution and occult-fans would flock to see the latest film as Blumhouse are incredibly popular.

• Every year they publish more than 15 DVD titles in the UK and also make use of digital distribution from services such as YouTube films, Netflix and more.

• In addition to this, Blumhouse also works with Universal Pictures. This means that one of the ‘big three’ will by the rights to a Blumhouse film if it is up to standard resulting in an even bigger profit and gain for Blumhouse.

• Enslaved uses common horror tropes and conventions with a fresh twist and so it would be wise for them to invest in our film.

How are Blumhouse able to produce low budget films?

• For this section I am using Paranormal Activity as a case study.

Page 7: 3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

• Paranormal Activity (2009) was produced for $15,000 and earned almost $200 million USD

• To produce the film in such a low cost, Oren Peli chose to shoot the film with a basic video camera and heavy usage of a tripod eliminating the need for a expensive camera crew.

• Peli also filmed the entire movie in his own home, eliminating the need to procure filming rights to film in public areas.

• Reportedly, the actors were paid a mere sum of $500 USD for their performances.

• Paranormal Activity hosts a small cast of 8 unknown actors.

• As the actors/actresses were unknown at the time of release this meant that their pay could be significantly lower than hiring major Hollywood hits such as Christian Bale.

How does this relate to Enslaved?

Page 10: 3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

• Enslaved was filmed on a simple Panasonic HD camcorder – the HC-V550 to be exact.

• This video camera is on retail for a general price of £345 therefore footage was cheap to film.

• We too, used unknown actors as this eliminates additional cost and because we don’t have a budget or means to contact high p profile actors.

• Rather than using grand locations and having to obtain filming rights, we filmed using the college area and in both me and Brandon’s house and as these are our own privately owned locations costs were not necessary.

• Filming was done quickly and in a total of 3 sessions and so we did not need to have to plan large scale shooting times unlike Hollywood blockbusters.

• Taking all the similarities into account, Blumhouse would be the perfect distributer!
