COUPLINGSELECTION
In order to design a coupling for a system, the following equation is used to determine the rated torqueTN of the application.
TN = Application rated torque [Nm]TMAX = Application peak torque [Nm]P = Rated power of drive [kW]n = Rated speed of engine [rpm]S = Service factor
TN [Nm]Pmotor [kW]
n [rpm]= ∙ 9549 ∙ S
The permissible rated torque TKN of the coupling has to correspond at least to the rated torque TN
of the application.
The permissible maximum torque TKmax of the coupling has to correspond at least to the peaktorque TMAX of the application.
Check that the coupling can accommodate required bores and rated speed.
Service factor
The service factor S is obtained according to the following table, from the driver type of motor and the driven machine group in which the coupling will be installed.
To determine the service factor, the driven machines are grouped as follows:
I. Continual load machines: Such as generators, conveyor belts, small lifting equipment of up to six starts per hour, low power machinery for wood working, small fans, small machines of which main movementis rotation, small centrifugal pumps.
II. Variable load machines: Such as small elevators, generators, winches, lifting equipment of up to 120 starts per hour, chain conveyors, bucket conveyors, crane movement mechanism, sand blast equipment, textile machinery, turbo exhausts (gas blowers and compressors), fans, machine tools in which mainmovement is rotation, large centrifugal pumps.
III. Normal size to heavy machinery: Such as heavy elevators, roller frames, rotary furnaces, cylinder grinders, refrigerating drums, mechanical mixers, cutters, sharpening machines, washing machines, looms, brick presses, fans, lifting equipment of up to 300 starts per hour, translation mechanisms.

COUPLINGSELECTION
IV. Heavy machinery: Such as dredge control mechanism, briquette presses, rubber rollers, ventilators for mines, sand and paper grinders, pumps with immersible piston, cleaning drums, machinery of oscillating movement, compound mills, cement mills, drawbenches, hoisting mechanisms, lifting equipment above300 runs per hour.
V. Heavy machinery of variable power consumption: Such as large drilling installations, roller tables for mills, horizontal and reciprocating vertical saws, wet presses, paper calenders, dry cylinders, centrifuges, small rolling mills for metals, roller equipment for paper.
To carry out a coupling selection for an installation transmitting uniform torque, an indication of power and speed of the driver side, the service factor, and the shaft size of the driver and driven equipment is generally enough. However, for conditions of operation under shock and changing loads, a revision inaccordance with DIN 740 part 2 is recommended, requiring the following information:
1. Kind of the driving and driven machine2. Power of driving and driven machines3. Rotational speed of operation4. Equipment driver and driven shaft diameters5. Peak torque (starting torque)
6. Starting frequency (starts per hour)7. Operation period per day8. Shock loads9. Exciting loads10. Ambient temperature
The technical department of Manufacturas UNE is pleased to assist with the selection of the couplingif required.
Design example
A bucket elevator is driven by an electric motor with a power rating of 16 kW and 1.550 rpm rotation speed, by means of a reducer whose driver shaft rotates at a speed of 200 rpm. The system wants to beassembled by Uneflex highly flexible shaft couplings.
Coupling design between motor and reducer
P = 16 kWn = 1.550 rpm
TN [Nm]Pmotor [kW]
n [rpm]= ∙ 9549 ∙ S
1
Being the driver an electric motor, and knowing that the bucket elevator figures in group II of the machine group classification under "variable load machines”, a service factor S of 1,5 is obtained for thesystem.
TN = ∙ 9549 ∙ 1,5 = 148 16
1.550Nm
Therefore, according to the Uneflex technical detail table, the suitable coupling for a nominal torque of 148 Nm is the M-4 reference, with a permissible rated torque TKN of 150 Nm, a permissible rated speed of 4.000 rpm and with a maximum borediameter of Ø35 mm.
Coupling design between reducer and bucket elevator mechanism2
Then, the appropriate coupling for a nominal torque of 1.146 Nm is the M-8 reference, with a permissible rated torque TKN of 1.200 Nm, a permissible rated speed of 3.000 rpm and with a maximumbore diameter of Ø90 mm.
P = 16 kWn = 200 rpm
TN = ∙ 9549 ∙ 1,5 = 1.146 16
200Nm

UNEFLEX Tyre Coupling
UNE’S PRODUCTRANGE / UNEFLEX
Its remarkable high elasticity makes it possible to compensate extremely large offsets in all directions without generating wear. Free from backlash, it is the appropriated coupling to absorb torque peaks and dampen vibrations, due to its quick smoothingqualities.
One of the most interesting features of the Uneflex shaft coupling consists on the simple way in which the elastic tyre is coupled. The tyre, composed of natural rubber with fabric reinforcements, are set on the
coupling's hub and fixed by means of fastening the rings with the screws. The coupling's rubber tyre is split, allowing the rubber band to be radially
replaced without moving the hubs and realigning either the driver or the driven
equipment, reducing downtime.
The fabric of the tyre can be aligned radially (R arrangement) or transversally (X arrangement), obtaining a different spring
stiffness. R fabric arrangement tyres have a lower torsional
stiffness, but the X arrangement is better suited for reverse operations
and shock loads.
The Uneflex coupling covers a high range of series: from the standard, to taper lock bushings, with spacer for pump drives, with brake discs and brake drums in accordance with the standards of the cranes of metallurgical plants, with SAE flywheel assembly, with special design tyres to balance greater misalignments for drives with sliding rotor motors and many other designs already created or to be developed for your application.
The Uneflex coupling is a highly flexible rubber fabric coupling appropriated forcompensation of big shifting and shock energies.

Zero maintenance: No routine maintenance or lubrication requiredQuick and easy installation and replacement: Design that allows a quick and easy element installation and replacement without moving hubs and realigning either the driver or the driven equipment, reducing downtimeHigh misalignment capabilities: Compensates extremely large angular, axial and radial misalignmentsVibration dampening and shock absorption: Due to its quick smoothing qualities, provides damping properties to the torsional vibration induced in the system by cyclic variation of the twisting momentand shocks induced by the fast load variation, protecting the entire systemWorking temperature range from -20 °C to +80 °C with the standard tyre of natural compound andfrom -15 °C to +100 °C with the chloroprene tyre compound Backlash free
Features and benefits
Storage and maintenance
In order to ensure a long-life cycle of the rubber element, it is fundamental to store the tyre protecting it against ozone, light (specially ultra violet rays), heat and oxygen, in a room with a relative humidity of less than 65% with a storage temperature range between +10 °C and +25 °C and without storing in the same room disinfectants, acids, chemicals and other similar substances that may cause a depreciationof the tyres.
Further details of the guideline for rubber product storage can be found in the standard ISO 2230.
The coupling design allows a perfect inspection of the transmission tyre without dismantling thecoupling, so a periodical visual inspection is recommended.

Assembly instructions and scope of delivery
To assemble the Uneflex coupling, mount the hubs (1) together with the pressure rings (2) on the shaft ends and align the system parts. The distance between the hubs “n” must be the one indicated on thedata sheet.
The tyre (3) is mounted on the coupling hubs, fitted to provide the smallest possible gap between its faces. For large couplings, before tightening the pressure rings, it is recommended to use clamping bands to fit the tyre. The tyre is secured with the prescribed wrench torque by means of the pressure ring and the screws (4). The fixation must be always carried out tightening two diametrally opposite screws in cyclic order, retightening the bolts after the first tightening as the rubber settles.
For replacing the tyre, only loosen the screws, until the tyre can be withdrawn.

All Uneflex couplings are available with safety mortises. In case of a tyre rupture, the safety mortises act as a torsionally rigid transmission element, permitting a temporary emergency operation with limited torque free of backlash. For the installation of Uneflex couplings with safety mortises, an angleof 45° must exist between the mortises of the coupling hubs.

The hubs are manufactured in cast iron, each one with eight teeth, except the A-00 andA-0, which have four and six respectively.
The elastic split insert that fits over the hub teeth is manufactured with the best quality
polyurethane compound, which can be supplied in three different qualities
(standard, high temperature and high performance) providing the
most suitable solution dependingon the application requirements.
The steel cover ring is fixed to the insert with two setscrews assembling the coupling. The design allows a quick and easy installation and replacement without moving
hubs and realigning either the driver or the driven equipment,
reducing downtime.
The A series is the simplest construction of all Acoflex range couplings. However, more coupling configurations are available: with taper-lock bushings, spacer and double spacer arrangement, brake disc and brake drum configurations, and SAE flywheelassembly. Other designs are available upon request.
ACOFLEX Jaw Coupling
The Acoflex coupling is a flexible coupling composed by four elements: two hubs, a elastomeric insert in between and the cover ring.
UNE’S PRODUCTRANGE / ACOFLEX
28
Zero maintenance: No routine maintenance or lubricationrequiredQuick and easy installation and replacement: The design allows a quick and easy element installation and replacement without moving hubs and realigning either the driver or the drivenequipment, reducing downtimeLong lasting: The elastic insert has an excellent resistance to chemicals and wear, with different polyurethane qualities available, obtaining a maximum working temperature range from -40 °C to +140 °CSafe: The flexible element is retained by the cover ring and there is no metal to metal contact between both hubs, avoiding tocreate any possible sparkHigh misalignment capabilities: Compensates high axial, angularand radial misalignmentsShock load and vibration absorption: The elastomeric insert absorbs the shock loads and vibrations transferred to the drivenequipment.

The elastic inserts retain their mechanical properties and hardness characteristics for several years if stored in the correct conditions (dry and covered place). However, the colour of the insert may varyover time due to the light.
The couplings’ hubs and cover rings can be stored in the same conditions for several years for anindefinite time.
A periodic visual inspection of the coupling is recommended.
Suitable for applications with high misalignments
When downtime and maintenance expenses are critical
When shock load and vibration transmission damping is necessary
Useful in low and medium power rates
Assembly instructions and scope of delivery
UNE’S PRODUCTRANGE / ACOFLEX
To assemble the Acoflex coupling, mount the hubs (1) on the shaft ends, without forgetting to lean the cover ring (3) on a hub (1), and align the system components, making sure the distance betweenhubs (1) “n” is kept, in order to ensure that the elastic insert can be fitted.
The elastic insert (2) is mounted in the gaps between the teeth of the hubs (1) and once, the steel cover ring (3) is fixed with the elastic insert (2) tightening the set screws (4) in one of the slots of theelastic insert (2).

Technical data
The high torque insert allows an increase of +40% of the torquecapacity.
The elastomeric insert has three types of symmetrical slots that enable assembling the cover ring in three ways depending on the application assembly requirements. The slot 1 enables to hold the ring in horizontal assembly, the slot 2 holds the ring in vertical assembly, and the slot 3 (available in inserts greater than A-4 on request) designed for both assemblies, preventing the movement ofthe cover ring.
The elastic inserts are manufactured with the best quality polyurethane elastomeric compound. ThreeAcoflex insert qualities and hardness are available, depending on the application:

This is a flexible disc style coupling used to link machine shafts and compensate little shaft misalignments while generating low restorative forces. The flexibility of these couplings is obtained from the flexing of thin metallic discs. The disc packs, composed of these individual thin plates held together by a socket and a ring, able to expand slightly when there is a misalignment, absorbing the vibrations and shock loads coming from thedriver side.
This coupling is available with two alternative configurations. The KL
configuration, composed of two hubs and one-disc pack kit, and
the FLS and KLS types, composed by two hubs, a spacer, and two-disc pack kits. Both configurations can accommodate axial and angular misalignments, but
only the FLS and KLS alternatives (the spacer
accommodate radial misalignment owing to have two flexible disc packs.
The disc packs are manufactured using high grade stainless steel
(AISI-301), ensuring high strength and high endurance to fatigue as well as
resistance to most environmental conditions. Lamaflex disc couplings utilizes unitized disc packs
with 4 or 6 bolting points designs. The higher bolting points in each disc pack, the larger the torque is able to transmit. However, smaller are the misalignments the coupling canaccommodate.
LAMAFLEX Disc Coupling
The Lamaflex coupling is an all-steel torsionally rigid coupling ideal to connectpumps, compressors, electric motors and other type of machinery.

Features and benefits
Zero maintenance: No routine maintenance or lubrication requiredNo backlash: The torsionally stiff design ensures there is zero backlash, making ideal when constantspeed is crucialLow operating cost: Easy installation and replacement, allowing inspection without disassembleLong life-cycle: Infinite life if assembled and aligned correctlyPractical use: Single disc and double disc pack configurations available and it operates in eitherdirectionsMisalignment capabilities: Compensates angular, axial and radial misalignmentsHigh power rating per size of couplingLightweight components: One of the lowest bearing loads available in a motion control couplingResistant to harsh environmentsWorking temperature range from -40 °C to +280 °C
Storage and maintenance
The coupling can be stored at a dry and roofed place for large periods of time. Rooms with humidityhigher than 65% and direct heat are not suitable storage conditions.
The coupling should be periodically inspected. This routine examination should include the inspection of the tightness of the fitting bolts and collar nuts and a visual analysis of the transmission components forsigns of fatigue or wear.
Application fields
Where high torque is required
Without strong vibrations and with slight misalignments
Ideal for applications where not much space is available
Resistant to high temperature environments

UNE’S PRODUCTRANGE / LAMAFLEX
Before assembly it is recommended to clean and degrease the contact surfaces of the flanges, bolts, discpacks and nuts.
To assemble the Lamaflex coupling, install the hubs (1) on the shaft ends and align the system components, making sure the distance between hubs is kept, avoiding this way to prestress the disc packs and in order to ensure that the disc packs (2) and spacer (5) can be installed.
Place the disc packs (2) and spacer (5). For the KL style coupling, the non-spacer configuration, only one-disc pack is used and no spacer. The disc pack position when assembling must be fitted so that the rings are in contact with the flange of the hub or spacer. Example of a detailed view of the boltconnection can be checked in the section “Features of disc pack screw connection”.
It is essential while tightening the fitting bolts (3) and collar nuts (4) to the correct torque, to ensure they are tightened diametrically. Before using the torque wrench, screw the components hand-tight. The collar nuts (4) shall be turned with the torque wrench to the specified torque (see table of tightening torques), while the heads of the bolts (3) are held stationary. This is to prevent excessivetwisting of the disc packs.
It is important to recheck the tightness of all the screws after 10 hours of operation.
