Coded departure routes are routes which the
FAA has designated as escape routes from
cities during convective weather.
SWAP Review:
Coded Departure Routes (CDRs)
The benefit to the FAA and the Airline is in
expediting departures when convective
activity is in the terminal area. CDRs can also be used in the Enroute
environment to avoid weather

If Operationally feasible, Dispatchers need to
respond to SPO directed CDRs.
Full Readback Clearances (FRC) of the CDRare given to carriers without MOUs
(Memorandum Of Understanding).
SWAP Review:
Coded Departure Routes (CDRs)
CDRs are eight character codes which are
discrete to each route (ie PHLORDS1).
These are called Abbreviated Clearances.

If CCFP is projecting
thunderstorms to impact
departures routes out of
high density airport/s, CDRs
can be used to route around
the convective activity.
The AOC Coordinator should
suggest, (on the SPT), to plan onCDRs at PHL from 2200Z to
0000Z in this scenario.

Airlines usually have a data
base to draw from that is
populated with CDRs.
If not, you can always use the
Route Management Tool at the
Command Center web site to
find CDRs.
CDRs are common to FAA and
Airlines which culminates in
streamlining route usage.

CDRs for the Enroute environment
CDRs can be used to route
around enroute weather.
In this example our flight is
scheduled to depart at 2100Z
from ORD to CLT.

Dispatchers can use CDRs that will get themaround weather, especially if there is no direction
from the SPO, or Re-route Advisory for your
particular route.
*Remember, CDRs are FAA and Airline friendly

These routes are used during convective activity and
utilize military airspace.
VACAPES Routes require pre-coordination with themilitary and ATCSCC.
Some of these routes also require fully over water
equipped aircraft.

Pilots to know ourresponsibilities?
Controllers are required to
maintain safe separation ofaircraft.
Dispatchers and Pilots are
required to maintain
operational control and safety
of flight. With respect to each others
responsibilities, the
Controllers, Dispatchers and
Pilots must work together to
insure safety in the NAS.
The NTSB report for this articlehas been included in the NTSB
report file located in the Swap
Procedures folder of this

8400.10 - FAA Inspectors HandbookChapter 6 - Guidance on Reroutes
Once initiated, a flight must continue to destination
as plannedand in with the conditions of the dispatch
release. A PIC may not continue to destination,
however, when in the opinion of either the PIC or
the aircraft dispatcher, it is unsafe to do so. In suchcase, the PIC must take action to obtain the aircraft
dispatchers concurrence on a new course of action
and then amend the dispatch release.

who in turn will validate new reroute.
Check for any weather phenomena that mayimpede safe flight.
Check for MEL implications. (Engine Anti-ice).
Run new flight plan for burn.Send ACARS message to flight with new flight

Not canceling flight plans in the ARTCC
host computer..
Impedes the accuracy of the flight data thatreflects demand at an airport which in turn has
a negative effect on Ground Delay programs.
Transponder codes are in high demand at ATC
Facilities. If the strip is not cancelled with the
ARTCC host computer a transponder code is being
wasted.

If you have filed a flight plan w/ATC and
then cancel it less than 45 minutes before P-
time, the flight strip has probably alreadybeen disseminated.
In addition to canceling the flight in your
Airlines computer, call a Flight ServiceStation or Flight Data to cancel the Flight
Strip in the Centers Host computer.

During SWAP you want to hold off filing until
you have the most current information. Then
select your weather avoidance route.
At the same time, ATC needs to start planning for
your flight so they can disseminate your flights
strip to the facilities 30-45 minutes before P-time.

This Spring (late April/early May), for a
few Airlines that volunteered, testing
will begin on attaching flight numbers to
Severe Weather Reroute Advisories.
Flight numbers will come from theCCSD data base.
