The role of TCM

• Progressing CCS by verifying and testing CCS technologies, reducing cost and risk related to scale up to full size for technology vendors.

• Develop and improve existing full scale carbon capture operations.

• Contribute to scientific research by running open and owner defined MEA campaigns.

• Generate knowledge and competence for the owners in all aspects of carbon capture technology

• Actively support carbon capture as an yimportant tool reducing global CO2 emissions.

Current status after 3 years of operation

Overall technology and business development

• Conducted test campaigns for Aker Solutions, Alstom, Shell Cansolv, demonstrating

and increasing the technology readiness level (TRL) for all these technologies.• Verified and increased precision for theoretical simulation models for scale-up

• Full scale demonstration on how to design and operate amine plant for low emissions, including detailed and fundamental competence on amine mist f tiformation.

• Completed one MEA campaign, now in the middle of a second campaign, which, to a large extent, will be openly shared in the scientific community.

The TCM “brand” ell established globall especill in US UK and Canada• The TCM “brand” well established globally, especilly in US, UK and Canada

• Contributed to increasing international attention for the need of “Industrial scale testing” facilities, both for emerging technologies and existing full scale operations.

• Award of phase 1 NETL funds to GE Alstom and University of Kentucky for large scale• Award of phase 1 NETL funds to GE, Alstom and University of Kentucky for large scaletesting at TCM

Current status after 3 years of operations

Environmental technologyEnvironmental technology

• Systematically developed and detailed an approval process for emission permits together with the environmental authorities.

• Developed competence of the environmental impact of various solvents with regards to formation of harmful degradation components, combined with improved understanding of atmospheric dispersions modelsunderstanding of atmospheric dispersions models.

• Improved measurement and understanding of occupational health issues related to amine operations.

• Improved on-line monitoring of emissions of solvent and solvent degradation products• Improved on-line monitoring of emissions of solvent and solvent degradation products

• Developed and improved manual isokinetic sampling and testing methods.

• In cooperation with SINTEF, developed and improved laboratory methods for measuring solvent degradation productsmeasuring solvent degradation products..

Current status after 3 years of operations

Operation and investment economy

• Developed detailed competence and understanding on correct material selection for both amine and chilled ammonia plants.

• Detailed understanding of corrosion problems in amine plants.

• Competence on solvent degeneration, reclaiming and waste handling economy

• The improved precision of the scale-up simulation models will contribute to p p plower OPEX and CAPEX for full scale investments.

Moving forward - TCMs key priorities g y

• Active business development to secure relevant test activities in the coming years for both amine and chilled ammonia units Amine plantcoming years for both amine and chilled ammonia units. Amine plant is currently fully booked until 2018.

• Full utilization of both flue gas streams, by solving the “Mist issue” in th i l t P j t i ithe amine plant. Project is ongoing.

• Establish support agreements with existing full scale operations.

• Initiate the development work on the Chilled ammonia plant with• Initiate the development work on the Chilled ammonia plant with Alstom

• Continue sharing knowledge nationally and globally.

• Continue the contribution to scientific research with MEA campaigns.

Summary:

• Carbon capture is essential to reach the climate goals • Test activities at TCM  contribute to bring cost of carbon capture down and by that progressing CCS globallycapture down, and by that progressing CCS globally

• TCM is unique in its scale, two flue gas streams and flexibilityflexibility

• So far three major CCS vendors have completed their test campaigns ‐ reducing costs and risks for scale‐up

• Several companies in line to test their technologies at TCM• TCM will continue to deliver results and demonstrate itsrelevance and importance for years to come
