An incident where a school boy being hit by a car last week could have been prevent- ed if there were clearer rules around cour- tesy crossings, a principal has told Waimea Weekly. A ten year old Richmond School student was hit by a car when crossing one of the courtesy crossings on Queen St, near Sun- dial Square, last Tuesday. Richmond School principal Tim Brenton says it has been his worst fear that a stu- dent would be hit by a car. “I’ve been here ten years and the ones around the school concern us big time too,” he says. “To me, they’re either pedestrian crossings or they’re not.” But police say the incident was isolated and “thousands” of people use them with- out issue every day. One of the first on the scene to the acci- dent was Richmond’s Keith Simpson, who works at the Sundial Square coffee cart. He says the raised crossing actually saved the boy’s life. “Because of the way it happened, I don’t think it was anyone’s fault. Maybe the kid should have looked and maybe the motor- ist should have spotted him but because it was a raised courtesy crossing, she didn’t hit him at speed,” he says. “If it had been a flat crossing and she had been coming down there at 50 km/h then it’s a different scenario.” Tim says his main concern has been with the courtesy crossings on the one-way Church St, which is situated on a road that runs between the school and its south- ern playing field. He says there had been moves to get that road blocked off to avoid such incidents occurring. But the fact that it has happened on a dif- ferent road has sent alarm bells through the school and he says there needs to be clearer clarification for both pedestrians Additional copies $1 100% locally owned and operated www.waimeaweekly.co.nz Waimea Your Community Newspaper Weekly SEE PAGE 5 Page 23 Titan effort seals win *Terms and conditions apply Support and Respect We can provide every service and option, and leave you with memories of a lifetime of love. 544 4400 www.wrfs.co.nz Garden trail tours through Richmond Accident was principal’s worst fear Phillip Rollo A spring garden trail through some of Waimea’s most stunning private gardens has raised around $1000 for the Auckland Point Kindergarten. Increasing L-Carnitine intake is the most natural way to manage healthy weight, because L-Carnitine picks up fat and puts it exactly in

the part of the cell where it is burned as energy. L-Carnitine also aids in increasing the metabolic rate without compromising muscle tissue. This is crucial, because muscle tissue is where most of the fat burning happens. L-Carnitine is also beneficial in the natural elimination of cravings and increasing the amount of energy you have to exercise, both of which are very important factors to consider for those who want to manage healthy weight. L-Carnitine is also used by athletes to boost endurance.

Funding shortfall for community groupsLocal organisations have requested more than $200,000 more than what is available from this year’s Tasman District Council commu-nity grant fund.Council allocates $184,000 of its general rates income for grants to support community led projects and services. Grants are made to or-ganisations whose services and projects pro-vide community wide benefit. But some of those groups have asked for a lot more than what is available with a new record total of $408,380.15 being requested in the form of 158 applications. Those numbers are highlighted by two re-quests of $20,000. However, council would not disclose who those groups were. The low-est sum was for $300.Tasman District Council’s grants and com-

munity facilities subcommittee will look over the applications tomorrow before notifying the applicants of the outcome in the next two weeks. The grants are made in several categories with a total of $20,000 set aside for community and economic development initiatives; $40,000 for arts, culture and heritage; $30,000 for festivals and events; $25,000 for youth/children pro-grammes; $21,000 for social services; $10,000 for beautification schemes such as planting, landscaping and artworks in public places; $15,000 for emergency services; $10,000 for community development for smaller com-munities; $10,000 for museums and $3000 for community newsletters. Allocations have averaged less than $2000 per applicant in the past.

The Red Cross rose appeal will be hitting the streets of Nelson next Friday. Approximately 55 volunteers will man nine stalls around the Nelson, Stoke and Richmond shopping areas between 9am and 3pm selling around 2000 red roses. Coordi-nator Megan Riddell, picture above, says they use the red roses to thank the public’s support over the past year and in turn hopes to get donations that it can use for further funding for programmes with-in the Nelson-Tasman community.

Rae Busch, Dovedale.

“Yes because naturally people come up to it and think you can go across. They don’t real-ise that the driver doesn’t have to stop.”

A boy was hit when using a courtesy crossing in Richmond in Richmond last week. Do you think the courtesy crossings should be altered?

Alister McDowell, Richmond.

“I think people need to know what a courtesy crossing actu-ally means.”

Cassandra O’Connor, Richmond.

“I think there should be a post that says they are not a pedes-trian crossing so that kids un-derstand, or made into formal crossings.”

Lisa Brooks, Richmond.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them. I think the boy that got hit didn’t stop and look and as long as you wait for the car to stop then you’re fine.”

Construction boom hits townA surge of construction projects have hit the Richmond CBD with most local construction companies finding themselves involved in sig-nificant projects. Those projects include the Tasman District Council office upgrade, up-grades to the Richmond Mall interior and entrance, a new Fonterra build-ing, a new Goughs site, a two-storey Network Tasman building on Oxford St and the demolition of the former Placemakers building on Queen St. They also follow on from the new Maori immersion school that was built by Arrow International, the new Sum-mit Real Estate building on Queen St and the TNL base in Richmond West.Justin Candish of Scott Construction, the company working on the Network Tasman building, says he does not have an answer to why Richmond was a specifically popular place to build right now but that it was a good time to develop in general. “There is a bit going on but I don’t re-ally know why. I don’t know whether it is parking related or not. I think money is cheap and it’s a good time to develop.”A representative from Gibbons Con-struction says there is “plenty of work on at the moment”, adding the Hope Crematorium at Gardens of the World as another large project on its books. Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne says the number of “high quality” projects highlighted the town’s growth. He was also unsure why there was so much happening right now but says that a lot of the developers involved had been mulling over potential sites

for a significant time. “What is also sees is that the Richmond business area is a really nice place for retailers and shoppers and that’s only going to improve,” says Richard.

The latest in home sound system technology isn’t much different to the latest in mobile device technology. In fact it is exactly the same.If you have an ipad, iphone, android or similar mobile device, you have in your hands the future of sound systems. Tim and his team at Beggs Musicworks on Hardy St, have packages available that allow your mobile device to be your remote, playing music from your itunes or your computer hard drive through a receiver. It is a simple way to organise and play your music, giving you great sound at a great price.“People don’t necessarily have physical media anymore, likes CDs or vinyl, and if they do you’ve still got to get up, flick through their collection push random and end up with a bunch of stuff you don’t want,” says Tim. “This is a very affordable, very easy way to do it.

Remotes are old news, this is very, very simple and gives you access to your collection either

on your computer, on your device or any radio station in the world.”Once you buy a receiver from the team at Beggs, download the free app and you are ready to go. “We are gradually moving towards no physical media when it comes to music so the whole point of this is its accessing the music you’ve already got easily. People that have got this say they listen to more

music now because it’s easier.”Tim says the trend overseas shows the receivers are getting more and more popular.Receivers start at just $1000 and it goes from there. To find out more or to get more advice on the receivers contact Tim and his team at Beggs Musicworks at 264-268 Hardy St or give them a call on 548 8699.

A local engineer says he watches in hor-ror every day as cyclists continue to ignore the safety of the Brightwater Bridge cycle lanes.Peter Todd, who owns PK Engineering, believes it is just a matter of time before a cyclist is hit by a truck on the bridge and questions why cyclists are pushing for a clip-on to the Appleby Bridge when the one in Brightwater is only scarcely used.Peter’s issue were raised after cyclists spoke out about the narrowness of the Appleby Bridge last month, saying how reluctant drivers are to wait patiently behind them as they cross. An experienced motorcyclist was seri-ously injured when the car in front of him slammed on its brakes as it was unable to

pass a cyclist on the Ap-pleby Bridge.Peter, who used to be a po-liceman for eleven years, has labelled some cyclists as “lazy, lyrca-clad primadon-nas” and says they should be educated on how to use the cycle lanes provided on the Brightwater Bridge before “bleating” that they need cycle lanes on the Ap-pleby Bridge. “They think they’re blooding Sarah Ul-mer or Lance Armstrong or something. They’re flat out through here and quite of-ten a log truck will come in behind them and they’ll go right across the road. I’ve

seen four times today where trucks were honking at the cyclists on the road.”But Malcolm Saunders, who held the Tas-man Wheelers cycle club presidency for close to 30 years, says the Brightwater

situation is different because the road is already wide enough for cyclists and mo-tor vehicles to be on it, while the cycle lane itself is too narrow.Peter used to “scrap bodies off the road” when he was in the police force and he doesn’t want to do it again. “I’d be surprised if we don’t have a death. They’re just blooding stupid. I yell at them now to get on the cycle lane.”Peter admits he did “feel for cyclists” in the situation where there was no cycle lane, like the Appleby Bridge. But he remains adamant that there is a perfectly fine one in Brightwater that goes unused and didn’t want to see money spent on one in Appleby only for it to become another white elephant.

Peter Todd says cyclists do not use the cycle lanes on the Brightwater Bridge.

Tasman District Police say they are keeping crime in check with all crime rising just 1.5 per cent in the past year. Those figures are calculated between July 2011 and June 2012 and about one quarter of all re-corded crime in that period involved theft re-lated offending.Tasman District has in recent years had very good crime resolution rates and this year the rates in all three areas have improved, with Mar-lborough again leading the way with a 64 per-cent resolution rate. There has been a 605.1 per cent jump in the number of offences related to dealing and traf-ficking illicit drugs. The district also recorded greater than 99 per cent resolution for this of-fending. Tasman District commander superintendent Richard Chambers says those figures showed

the successful proactive work police in Tasman had done in targeting drug dealers.Tasman recorded a 54.2 per cent increase in sexual assaults and related offences in the same period, with Marlborough recording 65.6 per cent increase and Nelson Bays recording 54.5 per cent increase. The West Coast was up 35 per cent.Richard says the increase in the figures for sex-ual offending were attributed to a small group of serious offenders apprehended throughout the district and put before the court for multi-ple offences. They include Nelson man William Mortensen who last week received a preventive detention sentence in Nelson District Court for multiple serious offences. In Nelson Bays robbery, extortion and related offences was down 50 per cent, while public or-der offences also continue the downward trend.

Effective Treatment for Smelly Feet

Smelly feet are the butt of many jokes. But having smelly feet and footwear is no laughing matter and it’s a highly embarrassing condition that can cause the sufferer to feel self-conscious and stressed. The main thing that feeds foot odour is sweat. Your feet are one of the parts of the body that perspire most. In one day, each foot can produce more than a pint of sweat! Sweat is basically just salt and water, so it doesn’t have a distinctive smell. The smell is actually caused by bacteria on our skin that feed on the sweat, and excrete waste, which has a strong odour. Wearing the same pair of shoes every day means that sweat builds up inside the shoes. This keeps the shoes moist, contributing to bacterial growth and often, an unpleasant smell. If your footwear is left to dry for a few days, the smell usually fades away. But once you put the footwear on again, the warmth returns and so does the bad smell. Independent research has shown that Gran’s Remedy is effective for actively treating bacteria and fungi known to cause smelly feet and footwear and treats the feet and shoes at the same time.

New Grey Power president Neville Male fended off Alan Turley in a two horse race for the vacant presi-dency of the 9000-member organisation last week.Neville received 88 votes to Alan’s 51 at a special meeting in Stoke last Thursday where a new execu-tive was called after several resignations recently.Former president Gordon Currie resigned from the position several months ago.Nelson City councillor Eric Davy was elected unop-posed to the vice-president position and seven new board members were confirmed, again unopposed.Neville told the 150-strong crowd that he would lead the organisation forward with more consulta-tion and getting better value for money for its mem-bers. He said he has been working on a business plan for the organisation for the past year and was

looking forward to his new role. “We’re delighted with the result and we have a good bunch of talented people there so it will be my job to harness that talent to the benefit of Nelson Grey Power members. It is a big job ahead, but it will be a good one.”He says he is happy to have the election past him. “We took a bit of flak for calling for the meeting and I’m relieved that it’s over and we’ve won.”He says the first meeting will probably be next week or the following week where they will look at a number of issues and putting together a plan leading into Christmas. “We want to start the new year in a positive frame of mind so we’ll have a few things to sort out but I’m not sure what will need addressing until our first meeting.”

and drivers before it happens again.“There should be signs up warning people that this is just a courtesy crossing and what that ac-tually means. “That way we can talk to the kids. But you do talk to them and tell them to wait until a car is stopped and then the problem is the car might stop and take off again.”Richmond councillor Judene Edgar says the Tasman District Council will look into issues surrounding courtesy crossings following the ongoing police investigation into last week’s in-cident.

As you line up to watch the Nelson filmed Kiwi Flyer movie these school holidays, don’t be surprised if you bump into some of the stars.Actress Brittany Dick is excited to watch herself on the big screen again now that the film is at State Cinema after opening last Thursday. The 14 year old Waimea College student landed a role in the movie when she audi-tioned last year, and plays Amanda in the movie.Brittany attended the world premiere of the New Zealand film here in Nelson two weeks ago, and is looking forward to see-ing the movie again, only this time with

friends.“I’m really excited to see the movie again, the pre-miere was the first time I had seen the whole thing so it will be cool to go with my friends.”Brittany is a member of the Nelson Youth Thea-tre Company so she is no stranger to being on stage, but Kiwi Flyer was the first feature film she had ever been in, and she says she enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot. “You watch a scene from a movie and think that the actors are doing all this hard

work, but behind the camera there’s like a hundred people bringing it all together,

it was really cool to see how they actually make a movie.”Brittany says it was a great opportunity to work on the film with the likes of Dai Hen-wood and Tandi Wright, and admits she was a little star struck.“I was so excited I had to try so hard not to scream in their faces.”Drama is something Brittany has always loved and she hopes to carry on with act-ing after school, and she is currently per-forming in Nelson Youth Theatre Com-pany’s Les Misérables as Cosette.Kiwi Flyer is based on the Collingwood St trolley derby and was written and direct-ed by former Nelson man Tony Simpson. It received funding from NZ On Air and Nelson City Council.

Magician returns to Mall

Magician Elgregoe performs his Razmataz show at Richmond Mall. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Well known magician Elgregoe is in Richmond this week performing a string of free fun, enter-taining illusions and magic tricks. The performances will begin at 11am and 1pm every weekday at the Richmond Mall, with his final show being held on Friday.Elgregoe, who’s real name is Greg Britt and is a recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit, brings an entirely new show to the district, hav-ing been here for multiple shows in the Rich-mond Mall previously and held anti-bullying magic shows at local schools. “We love coming to Nelson because the kids are always enthusi-astic. There’s nothing in this show that we have performed before so it’s all new,” says Elgregoe. “We spend eight months of the year perform-ing around New Zealand and everywhere we go there is a new crowd and new people, it’s nice.”

The atmosphere was electric in the Garin College Sports Hall on Wednesday afternoon last week as students, teachers and parents attended the Caw-thron Science and Technology Fair Awards. With over $6000 in prizes to be won this year, an air of anticipation could be felt around the room. Waimea College student Vanessa Shutte won the bronze science award for Years 11 to 13 for her pro-ject ‘Every Drop Tells a Story’. Vanessa looked into whether the size of the splatter differed if a drop of blood is released at different heights. She found that the higher the drop is released the bigger the splatter stain.Other winners from Waimea College were James Wagner who won the bronze technology award for Years 11 to 13 and the Royal Aeronautical Society award for the best investigation relating to ‘flow’, in-cluding hydro and aero dynamics, vessel building and design for his project ‘In the Thick of It’; and Avi Fridman who won the statistics award for the best use of statistics or statistical analysis in an in-vestigation for his project ‘How the Period of Soak-ing Affects a Seeds Time of Germination’.The supreme science award went to Holly Pittar, Nelson College for Girls, and the supreme technol-ogy award went to Allie Tonks, also from Nelson College for Girls.“It was a difficult task to judge the entries this year as the standard was so high and we had several very high achievers” says Jo Thompson, community ed-ucator at Cawthron Institute. “A team of 50 judges from a range of teaching and science backgrounds reviewed the projects via a thorough process of in-terviews at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Vil-lage”.Top scoring students had the opportunity to win a huge variety of prizes ranging from a week-long science workshop at the University of Otago, the historic Forest and Bird Shield and hundreds of

dollars in prize money from local businesses and organisations. Schools from throughout the region were repre-sented in the top ranking projects including, Nel-son College For Girls, Waimea College, Nayland College, Motueka High School and Nelson College. Judene Edgar, co-organiser and a judge of the fair commented “it’s amazing how each year, students can take an entirely new angle on a science theme or concept, their imaginations are inspiring. I did particularly love Vanessa’s project though – it was my personal favourite”.

A local mother and daughter design duo have returned from the WOW awards in Wellington with a third placing at the prestigious show.Cassandra Thomson and Coral Bowe of Richmond were awarded third place in the CentrePort Illumina-tion Illusion Section for their glow in the dark creation on Friday night.Their garment was the pair’s fifth collaborative entry to the Brancott Estate World of Wearable Art Award Show and starred a magician who made his assistant disappear. Watching their garments ‘now you see her, now you don’t’ performance on stage was a highlight for both women and Cassandra says they were shocked to be recognised on the world stage again.“It was very exciting, we were so surprised. We had ab-solutely no idea we would win an award. Each year the show keeps evolving and it is just amazing to see what the other people come up with.”For Coral the highlight of entering was watching the creation come to life on stage. “Every show is different, it’s just mind blowing. It just looks so different to what it does at home in your living room.”Working their sewing in around Cassandra’s two young children, the pair completed their entry “The Great Illusionist” in three months.“We had to use their afternoon nap times to get the work done, so we had about an hour to an hour and a half each day.”The pair have enjoyed success from their in-dividual entries with Cassandra entering 15 times since 1991 and Coral six times but Cas-sandra says they “have a great time creating gar-ments as a team.”Using glow in the dark nylon to create their magical entry, Cassandra mastered the bigger

design and sewing tasks and Coral hand stitched the lace and beading to make the details of the garment come together.Another Richmond entrant Gillian Saunders placed third for her “Dragged through a hedge” in the American Express Open Section.

The headline in the Waimea Weekly dated Sept. 26 seriously distorts the issue of vehicle testing, to the point of irresponsibility. Changing WoF will ‘risk lives’ is a sensationalist headline, to say the least. The UK is exactly the same size as New Zealand – yet they have 15 times more vehicles than we do. In the UK, a new vehicle is not required to have Ministry of Transport certification for the first three years and then yearly thereafter.Of course, the tests are more rigorous and cost more. Therefore, most sensible people will make sure their vehicles are ok before they go for their MOT.The process places responsibility for vehicles directly upon the owner’s shoulders. Which is where it needs to be. It works very well.Ken Heraty, Richmond

The improvements to the Appleby Bridge for cy-clists are not a huge cost. We have here the same scenario as school buses and children getting on or off – two moving elements going at differ-ent speeds in a fixed environment. So the same rules are needed. 1) Move the ‘bike’ signs back 100m. 2) Add a user friendly activation for the bike sign i.e. ride past a beam type activation not stop and press a button. 3) Add a 40km/h speed sign back a further 100m from the bike sign il-luminated when the bike sign is illuminated. All this is simple available technology, solar pow-ered and relatively inexpensive. Niven Paine, Appleby.

The Maldives is the only place I have ever been where the destination is picture postcard, holiday brochure beautiful from the moment you arrive – no driving for hours down the coast to find that magical spot, it’s all magic from the moment you arrive.Picture tropical islands, crystal clear waters teem-ing with fish, white beaches, clear blue sky with just the occasional cloud and warm gentle breeze.”

We wish Hayden all the best with his new business

You may have known it as RPM auto services, but the business that provides you with quality and re-liable automotive services is now under new own-ership, and is sporting a brand new name, Route 6 Automotive.Hayden Diskin, a local with a wealth of mechani-cal knowledge has made the shift from Brightwater Motors and has taken the plunge and bought the business. The name change is all part of a fresh image for the Richmond business, which Hayden says will be pro-viding quality automotive services, from a team of friendly professionals. The name Route 6 Automo-tive was inspired by State Highway 6 which runs di-rectly past it’s Richmond location and is also a play on the famous ‘Route 66’ in America.A visit to Hayden and his team at Route 6 Automo-tive will provide you with all your mechanical needs from vehicle servicing, to Warrant of Fitness and any other vehicle repairs you may need.Hayden has spent many years building up his knowledge as a mechanic, and with a young family, now is the perfect time to run his own business. Af-ter working for so long in the industry, Hayden has built up a lot of useful contacts that make sourcing those hard to find and affordable parts easy. He also has a great relationship with suppliers, and custom-

ers can put their trust in those networks. “Nothing is too hard for us to find and we are lucky to know some great people within the industry.”Hayden is also looking forward to continuing the great relationships outgoing owner Ron McPhail

has built and mechanic Daryell Stevens will be stay-ing on with the new business. “I look forward to meeting with customers and getting to know them, and keeping that great base of people that are existing clients.” Daryell has done a lot of work with motorbikes so he is your go to guy for any bike mainte-nance, and Hayden’s worked with all kinds of motors from small, to 4 wheelers and ma-rine maintenance. The team is also able to pro-vide you with your warranty servicing, and tune ups and

can now offer tyre repairs for punctures and can source and fit a replacement if necessary. Hayden is also offering a free pick up service to make life eas-ier, with pick up from any address from Wakefield to Richmond. If you’ve run into trouble and need your car fixed straight away but don’t have an alter-native vehicle, Route 6 Automotive will also have a handy courtesy car available to customers. Hayden says he welcomes new customers to come down and chat and says a huge thank you to all of the loy-

were with him out at Brightwater Motors. “I’m looking for-ward to new challenges, and catching up with old customers, for the last 19 years I have been at Bright-water Motors, so thank you to all of those customers that supported me out there.”The nearby cycle trail and Jubilee Park make it easy to drop your car in for a repair on the week-end, and either jump on your bike or walk across to the park to watch the kids play Saturday sport.Hayden and the team at Route 6 Automotive wish Ron McPhail all the best on his new endeavors.

Trade customers can also feel welcome to make an enquiry, and with the weather a bit warmer, Hayden says it is time to start thinking about main-tenance on your vehicle. “Now that it’s spring don’t forget to get your vehicle serviced, antifreeze tested and automatics serviced ready for towing over the

Hayden says he welcomes new customers to come down and chat and says a huge thank you to all of the loy-

al custom-ers that

were with him out at Brightwater Motors.

WINDOW ON WAKEFIELDWakefield Community Council Re-port The creation of a sub committee called Focus Wakefield has been amazing, as was the turnout to the public meeting they called. Items covered in discussion at our last meeting included: Allan to take over community notice board du-ties, discussion about table tops that may need replacing in the area by that same noticeboard. We were not happy to see the general rate rise was not the reality for many landowners, but heard that all individuals are dif-ferent so it’s hard to make a general statement of percentage rise other than on the general rate. Signage is being actioned by putting up signs to indicate cyclists may use the St John’s driveway to stay safe. We indicated our concern about removing rural

road makings. Other signs in the vil-lage are being cleaned, and updated very soon. Discussions ensued on updating the mural on the chemist shop wall as well.Rev.d Allan Wasley, Chair.

Waimea Area QuiltersOur next monthly meeting will be Thursday 11 October, 7.30pm at Hope School Library, cnr Patons Rd and Aniseed Valley Rd. We are a friendly, busy group and all levels of quilters are most welcome. Bring your own sewing or join with us in various projects. Contact Marilyn on 541 8435 or Sue 541 9689.

Senior Care Fashion and Fun in Brightwater and WakefieldHave you lost your fashion funk? Is your ward-robe dominated by grey, black and sensible navy blue? You need to come to our Fashion Show at St Johns Worship Centre, Wakefield, on Wednes-day 24 October at 2pm.For a gold coin entry you can view the colours and styles that will be in fashion for Spring 2012. The fashion show, kindly sponsored by Fashion Central in Richmond, will also include enter-tainment from the Wakefield School Pop Group. There will be spot prizes thanks to our generous community sponsors, afternoon tea and plenty of time to catch up with old friends and make new ones. This event is just one of many organised by Nico-la Berthelsen, in her Anglican Diocese Trust funded role, as Senior Care Co-ordinator for the Brightwater and Wakefield communities. If you would like to meet others in your community, come and join a Senior Care activity. We have regular and varied outings ranging from WOW, private gardens and films to picnics at the beach and mid winter dinners. Alternatively, you could join us at our Games and Exercise Programme held each Thursday at 10am at the Brightwater Community Church hall. If you are interested in any of these events, need transport to appointments or would just like a friendly face to visit, then contact Nicola 021 061 6180 or phone 542 3694.

Mainly Music in WakefieldMainly Music moved out of the Wakefield Vil-

‘Elsie and Norms Macbeth’. All the proceeds from the night went to the Wakefield Playcentre and the Wake-field Scouts. We would also like to thank everyone who came along and supported us. We hope you enjoyed the production as much as we did. A special thanks to Jennifer Amosa from Playcentre who played a lead role in the production. Well done Jen we are all very impressed. Sunny days mean more outside playtime, which the children have loved. The sandpit can now be played in, the fort and ropes have been getting some good use with a few of the lit-tlies completing their first ascent to the top (well done Harley). The wonderful thing about Playcentre is there is much fun to be had outside in our spacious grounds as well as inside, especially when Paul Tregurtha from the Wakefield Methodist Church comes along for our song and dance sessions. The kids get right into it, and even dress the part. Che I think might have a future in the music world as he loves sitting beside Paul and mimicking him playing the guitar. If you want to get your kids socialising with other children, want them to have fun, and want them to grow and learn in an awesome setting then come and see us. We are a friendly bunch at Playcentre and often see mum’s pushing their buggies past. Playcentre sessions are run Mon-day to Friday from 9.30am to 12pm during school terms. Give Wendy or Jen a call on 541 8866 if you have any questions.

The Mainly Music Group held a family fun nite at Faulkner’s Bush last week where families participated in fun activities and games.

lage Hall and onto Faulkner’s Bush for a Family Fun Nite last Saturday. We had awesome weather and an awesome time. We began with a few Mainly Music songs and then had an egg and spoon race, three-legged races with sacks and then a tug of war, with boys vs girls, women vs women, and men vs men - this was a great highlight. Icing biscuits was a yummy interlude before we enjoyed some BBQ sausages. Mr Whippy arrived at just the right time and the children thoroughly enjoyed their ice creams. We are having a break during the holidays and begin again on the first Mon-day of the next school term. Please contact Wendy Milson 544-7596 for more information.

Focus WakefieldWhilst we had an excellent turnout to the public meeting, we are always looking for ways to engage a wider cross section of the community. We are especially keen to engage Wake-field’s young people and parents with school age children. If you’re

under 20 and want the opportunity to go into a draw to win a phone top-up voucher, complete and return one of our survey forms about Wakefield. As we informed you last month, we have begun work on the following projects. Developing a website and facebook page for Wakefield - initial discussions have been held regard-ing the website, building on some base work that has already been completed. We are looking at brand-ing, and layout and how the website can best be used for the benefit of the entire community. We want to make sure that when we launch the web-site, it is easy to maintain and easy to navigate, but also has the capacity to grow as the needs of our community change.Beautification - as the cycleway will be bringing cyclists into Wakefield down Edward Street, this is where we want to put our initial focus. We are working with local businesses, groups and the general community to see how we can make the street more attractive, with the amenities required.

Page 20: 3 October 2012

Community Newspaper - work is well underway on launching a new commu-nity newspaper. Our first edition will be published in November, which will also sadly be our last edition of Win-dow on Wakefield in its current format in Waimea Weekly. However, we are excited about being able to bring more local content, photos and articles to our community. We believe that this project will help us all communicate better with one another. We are currently looking for advertisers, regular contributors, and contact details for all community groups and as such, will be contacting as many of these people as we can over the next month. If you have something to contribute, please contact Sonia on 541 9005 or [email protected]. For those who gave their details to be added to our Community Register, we haven’t forgotten about providing you with a summary of the points covered at the public meeting and look forward to getting that to you in coming weeks. Some on the list may have already been contacted by one of our project teams. All of our projects rely on finding peo-ple with the right skills, the right ex-perience, and the enthusiasm for the various areas, and we hope that if you read about something that interests you, that you will make contact with us. If you’re interested in learning more, get-ting a survey form to complete, or want to contribute in any way please email us at [email protected], phone Diane on 541 9725 or pop a note into one of the drop boxes at Wakefield Villa Tearooms and Wakefield 4 Square.

Wakefield Indoor BowlingThe Wakefield Indoor Bowling Club season has drawn to a close. Two tour-naments with other Clubs were played during the season, with prizes kindly donated by Wakefield Four Square and Wakefield Pharmacy. Prizegiving was held at the Wakefield Hotel Restaurant on 20 September, with Blair Eggers once again scooping seven out of the 10 cups awarded. Blair is a young man

who has learnt well from Coach, Clive Johnstone, and has a great bowling fu-ture ahead of him. Blair won Nelson Junior Champion of Champions and recently attended the National Second-ary Schools Championships held in Porirua, where he qualified and placed within the top 22. Older brother Ryan, who also plays for Wakefield, won the

Nelson Under 18s for the second year running and recently attended the Un-der 18s National Competition held in Porirua, where he placed a very cred-itable 8th. Younger sister Alydia came along to the last three nights of the sea-son and showed that she is going to give her brothers a run for their money. The talent must run in the family. A great finish to the 2012 season.

Local Firies Join the Fire Fighters NZ Ride for CancerThe Fire fighters NZ Ride for Cancer will take place from 27 November to 1 December 2012 as a national fund-raising event for the Cancer Society. A Richmond Small-bore Rifle Club is hoping to play its part in keeping future hunters safe as horror shooting stories pile up.In the past few years several hunters have been shot dead after being mistaken for game or due to accidents with guns and members of the Rich-mond Small-bore Rifle Club say it wants to play its part in keeping people safe. The club, which operates throughout the winter from its Jubilee Park range, is putting its small-bore rifles to one side and allowing target shoot-ing – including .22 rim fire sporting rifles and high powered air rifles – at its range in an effort to teach young shooting enthusiasts the proper technique. Warwick Sidwell says the number of hunting accidents is horrific and if the learn-to-shoot programme gives just one future hunter the skills to be safe, then he’d be “rapt”.The club runs the programme throughout the winter but this is the first time they have attempt-ed it through summer and will only go ahead if

they get enough people keen to take part. “We run this very successful programme called learn to shoot, we’ve kept it a little bit low key because we have a lot of guys who are competi-tive shooters and don’t have the time to teach too many juniors. But we’d like to do our bit and if we can run this over summer and teach some begin-ners the basics then that would be really good.”Warwick says the club is concerned by the lack of safe suitable places for people to practice tar-get shooting and are prepared to open their reg-istered range and supply experience instructors. “When I was a kid we could go to a river or up a hill and shoot. You can’t do that now because they might be someone up the river fishing or a house in the distance, it’s just too dangerous.”Strict conditions will apply, including following the rules of the experienced range personal. For more information about the course, or to register, call Warwick on 547 9414 or Paul Hol-land on 544 4117.

Titan effort seals championshipNearly 1000 kilometres separates Nel-son and Invercargill on the map but only two points separated their rugby league teams on Saturday.Tasman Titans head coach Phil Berg-man credited the team’s spirited cul-ture as it came back from a six point deficit at half time to secure a 26-24 win over the Southland Rams in the South Island Inter-district Champion-ship final. “We went off our game plan a little and we weren’t doing things the way we should have been. That was a hard game and it shows in the score line. It was as close as you can get,” says Phil. The Titans were the first team to get on the scoreboard when Hayden Smith landed an early penalty, but that was cancelled out when Tom Watts of the Southland Rams ran in for the first four pointer of the game.Shaun Taulangi-Todd and Stacey Mi-kara also dotted down for the south-erners as the Titans struggled to string sets together.James Vailanu hit back for the Titans before standout centre Callum Smith ensured the side would only be trail-ing by a converted try heading into the half-time break.Tasman looked more focus in the sec-ond half and it only took five minutes for Hayden to score under the posts, despite suggestions he may have knocked the ball on when crossing

the paint. The sea-saw affair continued through-out much of the second spell with Matt Birch and Callum trading tries for either team. But when a Southland player was sent to the sidelines for ten minutes, momentum swung in Tas-man’s favour.Emotions blew up on the sideline when a linesman ruled a Southland player to have stepped out in his at-tempt to push the Rams back into the lead. The Southland coach was given his marching orders and was forced to sit in the grand-stand for verbally abusing the linesman following the decision. Things only got worse for Southland when Freedom Walker put the Titans in front just minutes later. With the scoreboard telling the crowd time was up, it looked unlikely that Southland could come back from a six point margin. However, the Rams managed to find a hole down the left hand side and give the kicker a chance to equalise. His conversion at-tempt went wide and the Titans were crowned victors.Phil says the win highlight’s Tasman’s growth in rugby league circles. “We are the top of the South Island, we have technically gone unbeaten because the Canterbury game was wiped and from here we want to be the dominant force in rugby league.”

Nelson Badminton hosted the inaugu-ral under-13 National Championships on behalf of Badminton New Zealand, at the Nelson stadium over the week-end.Being the first, there was no way of knowing how many entries would be received, however organisers were pleased with the final total of 33 en-trants. Twenty-one of those came from the North Island while many of the South Island entries came from as far south as Invercargill and Dunedin. There were five competitors from Nel-son.As expected, the championship events were dominated by the North Island-ers, with all five winning players and combinations coming from the Auck-land region. The Nelson players all tried hard and even surprised them-selves with some of the results they achieved against much more experi-enced opposition. Overall, there were 109 matches played, and they ran very much to time, which was a credit to the organisation skills of Nelson secretary Cassie Marwick. Fri-day evening saw the first two rounds of singles and mixed doubles, and a round of the plate competition for first round losers. Saturday morning’s ses-sion consisted of getting all the draws through to the semi-finals, so that those matches could be played in the Saturday afternoon session. Sunday’s session consisted of the finals in all 13 events that were contested. Of the Nelson players, the best performer was Matthew Earle who made the final of the boys’ doubles plate with his Auckland-based partner, as well as having a win in the singles plate and two close losses in the mixed doubles and plate

events. Kate Standish won her first round plate singles match, but lost both her mixed doubles, where she was playing with fellow Nelsonian Shiloh Edmonds. Harry Tilsley achieved a win in the boys’ dou-bles plate where he played with Ben Perkinson of Waikato.

Skaters qualify for nationalsTo beat the best you have to pull out some-thing big and Isaac Allen nearly did that at the Cheapskates Nelson Skateboard Competition, throwing himself off the bowl with a 360 back-side air.Unfortunately for the young Nelson rider, he was unable to land the trick, despite wows from all of his fellow contestants, and snapped his board on the final attempt.Competition organiser Chris Kirby high-lighted the runner-up’s courage and ability to push the top competitors at Saturday’s event at Neale Park. Cheapskates chipped in with a new board following the event. “You gotta have big balls to attempt those tricks and most guys aren’t even prepared to go there. Isaac is renowned for trying those sorts of tricks. You need someone like that because they push eve-ryone along,” says Chris. “They’re consistent but not doing anything risky and he’s doing something crazy.”Due to a string of wet weather over week-end periods, the skateboard competition was rushed into the calendar without much notice or publicity. But Chris was still pleased with the turnout of competitors and the skill-level on show. The winners in each of the categories were Jimmy Jay Wright and Liam McAlister. Both young skateboarders have gained automatic entry into the yet-to-be-announced national final. The next local competition will be the Tasman Skate Park Tour in January.

Finally we have had two weekends in a row of nice consistent warm fishing weather and judging by the boats at the Nelson and Okiwi bay boat ramps plenty of people are making the most of it.Seventy plus boats were counted by Niwa in a four hour period at the Okiwi Bay boat ramp last Saturday. The weather looks pretty good long range for the coming week, with a few showers early in the week and maybe some next Saturday but hopefully that will change for the good. The snapper should have ar-rived in Tasman Bay and from now on we should get reports of good numbers being caught in front of Rabbit Island and along the boulder bank. We have heard of a few big snapper being caught in nets and one or two on the rods in Tasman Bay. Some good size kahawai have been landed, some of which have been full of whitebait. Delaware Bay is still fishing well with some 9kg-plus fish being landed recently, with plenty of gurnard around. There are still heaps of scallops at

Okiwi bay with only a couple of tows required to secure most people’s limit. Fishing in the mussel rafts at Squally Cove has been producing some nice brim, gurnard and kaha-wai also. Kenepuru has been incon-sistent with only a few good snap-per being caught but should start to come right in the next few weeks.Tip for this month - Fishing the Kenepuru is best done on the in-coming tide, either early morning or evening. Try to fish where there is a good current flow, using lots of salmon burley and be patient. It can take up to several hours from low tide for the fish to come into your burley trail and on the bite. Stray lining works best with two beak hooks about 7/0, with one acting as a keeper hook and followed by a small 1/2oz ball sinker. Pilchards are usually the best bait. The bigger fish are usually back in the burley trail so a long cast is a good bet. The reel is put into free spool with only enough drag to stop the tide pull-ing out nylon. Sit back, wait for the strike.

Island last week.

Fourteen young Nelson golfers are currently vying for the national under-17 championship at Greena-cres Golf Club.It is the first time in around 15 years that the Eagles Boys and Girls Golf Championship of New Zealand had come to any course in the Nelson-Marlborough Districts.Play began on Tuesday morning and the final 18 holes were scheduled for Wednesday morning.Nelson had also entered a team of three, which con-sists of two male and one female player.Tournament convenor Barry Shirtcliff says prepara-tion for the two-day tournament began as early as 2009.There are 60 golfers entered into the competition which was previously won by local golfer Ryan Chis-nall.Barry was hopeful that the Nelson team could pro-duce similar results. The tournament is sponsored by Higgins.
