J. Doug Knotts ExhibitThe public is invited to attend a reception Saturday
March 8 from 7-9 pm at the Southern Arts Society forJ. Doug Knott’s exhibit “ Anthropomorphic Beings &Ritual Objects” - on view through March 29.
“The anthropomorphic work exhibited in this showreflects my interest in storytelling, and in pottery, or artthat explores a narrative or even a fragment ofnarrative. People in the South are great storytellers; myfamily fits well within this tradition and it has beenfollowed in my family by my late grandfather and auntswho sculpted and painted the daily activities of their life.
So while I am concerned about the formal aspects ofmy work, the reason that I make artwork at all is thatneed to tell stories. In most of this work the viewer mustcontribute to the story. I have created characters, ideas, animal and people forms and ritual objects that you canuse to populate and build your own storyline around. These objects can carry meaning for you in any numberof ways, depending on what you bring to the experienceof owning them and placing them in your home, or ingiving them as gifts to people that you love and shareyour life with.
Most of the work in this exhibit is soda firedstoneware, a firing technique chosen because it revealseven the fingerprints of the maker, and accentuates slipand glaze colors in the cone ten reduction firing thateffectively makes firing the kiln part of the creativeprocess. I have formulated the glazes, slips and claybodies to take advantage of the firing technique.”
Doug is a Professor and Chair of the Department ofVisual Arts in the School of Performing and Visual Arts atGardner-Webb University.
