WHAT IS HEALTH EVALUATION?

• Process of conducting medical inspection, remediation and follow up study is called health evaluation.

• The chief aim of health evaluation is to keep the child healthy so that his educational achievements are not hampered.

WHEN IS IT CONDUCTED?

• Health evaluation is a continuous process.

• It starts when the child enters school and ends only when he leaves it .

WHAT IS MEDICAL INSPECTION?

• Examination of the children by a doctor,• Checking for any diseases / disorders.

WHY IS IT NECESSARY?• Medical inspection is very important, as

diseases in children cannot be cured without proper diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.

• Class teacher, • School doctor, • Physical

• The school nurse,

• The specialist,

• The dentist, • The dietician, • Eye

STAGES OF HEALTH EVALUATION

• 3 stages

• Medical inspection,

• Remediation and

• Follow up study.

• Without treatment and follow up study, medical inspection has no value.

GOALS OF HEALTH EVALUATION

• Evaluation of the present health status of the child.

• Treatment of any disease.• Control over communicable

diseases.• Nursing the patients.• Advising the parents.• Health instruction and

teaching rules of health and hygiene.

OBJECTIVES OF HEALTH EVALUATION

• Help is extended to the child according to his present health status.

• Proper guidance is given to the child and all concerned with him.

• Controlling the spread of any communicable disease noticed in any child by isolating him.

• Helping and guiding the parents in keeping their children healthy.

PERIODIC MEDICAL INSPECTION

• A medical officer should conduct the medical examination.

• He cannot examine all the children thoroughly without the help of a teacher.

• Useful information can be gathered if parents are present at the time of medical inspection.

PRESENT STATE OF MEDICAL INSPECTION IN SCHOOLS

• At present the state of health services in schools is not very satisfactory, especially in some private schools.

• In spite of the instructions issued by the education department no medical examinations are being conducted in schools.

STEPS FOR EFFECTIVE MEDICAL INSPECTION

• To make medical examination more effective, it should be replaced by health evaluation.

• The school should be given the duty to develop a programme for the continuous health evaluation of every child and subsequent follow up also.

• A qualified, experienced, expert doctor should be arranged to conduct the medical examination.

• Annual medical examination of each child should be taken and record maintained.

• Vaccination must be carried out regularly.

STEPS FOR EFFECTIVE MEDICAL INSPECTION

• A thorough examination of each child should be conducted and health need found out.

• The parents, teacher and the child himself should be given knowledge of this.

• The children with disorders if present should be referred to the concerned specialists.

• Proper follow up is very essential.• Co-operation of all those involved

should be sought.
