‘cuz it’s a JUNGLE out there!!

Page 2: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

GUERILLA EAR

TRAININGLet’s get started!

‣Why is this So Important?‣‘Perfect Pitch‘ versus ‘Relative Pitch’‣GOOD NEWS! You already know

way more than you think!

Page 3: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT??>Because Music is SOUND - Ear Training lets you KNOW and instantly analyze what you are hearing

>After you learn Ear Training you can... “Hear it once and PLAY IT- plus WRITE the CHART”

>Learn this Vital Skill and you will become... a Better Player / a Faster Arranger / a Sharper Producer

GUERILLA EAR TRAINING

Page 4: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

GUERILLA EAR TRAINING

‘Perfect Pitch’ versus ‘Relative Pitch’

PERFECT PITCH (Absolute Pitch) ->less than 0.01% of people have it>you either HAVE IT or you DON’T (nbd!)

RELATIVE PITCH - >Everybody has it, in varying degrees...

[that means YOU TOO!]>You can DEVELOP it and improve your Skill

[...that’s what we’re doing today!]

Page 5: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

GOOD NEWS!!You already know WAY more than you think!

If you can sing “Happy Birthday”,

you’re already on your way -

This Class will...

Narrow it down - Start Simple - and Grow from there

SO... Let’s N A R R O W I T D O W N ! ! ! ==>

Page 6: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

N a r r o w i t D o w n ==>In Western Music there are only 12 NOTES in an octave

the same 12 notes repeat in the next octave

95% of all pop music is built on the MAJOR SCALE

the Major Scale only uses 7 of the 12 notes

...and I GUARANTEE you already know these 7 notes SO...“Let’s start at the very beginning -

a very good place to start...”

Page 7: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

GUERILLA EAR

TRAINING

We start our Training on the mountaintops of Austria

with the Von Trapp children- “Do-Re-Mi” 1-2-3 A-B-C...

it’s ALL THE SAME!! Yes folks, it’s

FRAULINE MARIA!

Page 8: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Ear Training is EASYIt’s Only 7 NOTES!!

1-2-3 / do-re-mi / A-B-C /...it’s all the same

1-2-3 do-re-mi Scale Degree Key of C1 do Tonic C2 re Super-Tonic D3 mi Mediant E4 fa Sub-Dominant F5 so Dominant G6 la Sub-Mediant A7 ti Leading Tone B

Page 9: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

“Do-Re-Mi” ...WHAT??In “The Sound of Music” Rodgers & Hammerstein were teaching the Von Trapp children Ear Training

The system is called “SOLFEGE”; been around forever

Each of the 7 NOTES in the scale has a syllable

Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do (same as low Do) {used to be ‘UT’!}

It is called a ‘Movable Do’ system (Nashville Number System)

SING IT! ...really fast, syllables LOUD, rush past the rest of it-

Page 10: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

a ‘C’ Major Scale is all White Notes on the keyboard

Now just sing The First Three Do-Re-Mi = 1-2-3 = C-D-E

***Focus on the sound of each Note***When I play a note, you SING which of the 3 it is - (Come on, only 3 options!!)

1 2 3 5 6 74 8

Page 11: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

It’s time for...POP QUIZ #1!!

{Let’s go FAST!}

Page 12: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

POP QUIZ RULES>Take out manuscript or blank paper>Now we are moving from Austria to Nashville...

so instead of writing “Do-Re-Mi” write 1-2-3*For now, everything is in the

Key of ‘C’ Major -*Remember, it’s “Relative Pitch”...

so you are writing your answers ‘relative’ to this Reference Pitch -

LISTEN and lock in this Key Center:

Always identify the first 3 pitches of the scale 1-2-3 with the song

“Do-Re-Mi”The UP-DOWN Game

‘cuz it’s a JUNGLE out there!!

Page 25: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

***Key Center***The KEY CENTER is the HOME BASE, the Starting Note, the ‘Do’, NOTE 1, the BOSS, the Big Cheese, the TONIC, the note that feels “Final” to us, very often the last Chord of the song...

Even most non-musicians can identify this note

So far, everything we have done has been in the Key of ‘C’ - (every melody can be played in every Key)

Let’s practice identifying the Key Center

Page 26: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

POP QUIZ #3

Identifying the KEY CENTER

>I’ll play part of a song, you get the Key Center in your head

>When I point to you, you sing the Key Center Note / the ‘Do’

NOTE 1 of the Keysing the word “HOME”

(sing pretty now, the whole class is listening!!)

Page 27: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Pop Quiz #3I play the tune, you sing the Key Center

Page 28: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

POP QUIZ #4

Identifying the KEY CENTER

>I’ll play part of a song, you get the Key Center in your head

>When I finish I’ll play 1 note:*Write “YES” if it IS the correct Key Center

*Write “NO” if it is NOT the correct Key Center

Page 29: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

TRAININGPop quiz #4

‣ Did you correctly identify the Key Center?

Don’t worry if you didn’t... we’ll come back to it -Let’s add a New Note

(after a ‘Guerilla Tactics Tip’)

Page 32: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

GUERILLA TACTICSTIP #2

Music and Pitch are EVERYWHERE!

Get yourself a ‘Personal Pitch Reference’

(for times when a keyboard or other pitch reference is not available)

‘cuz it’s a JUNGLE out there!!

Page 33: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

GUERILLA TACTICSTIP #2

*I know my car chimes a ‘D’ when I take my seat belt off while driving

*The 60 cycle ‘hum’ from an amplifier is roughly a ‘B’ *I know the lowest note

I can sing is an ‘F’>>>Find the lowest note you can

sing and remember the pitch!

‘cuz it’s a JUNGLE out there!!

Page 34: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Time for a New NoteSo far we learned:

1-2-3 = Do-Re-Mi = C-D-E

Now let’s add

Note 5 = Sol = G (in the Key of ‘C’ Major)

Page 35: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

It’s Only 7 NOTES!!Let’s add Note 5

Think about it this way...

a MELODY is like a Treasure Map (it has a shape, but no starting point).

The KEY CENTER gives you the Starting Point.

Page 47: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

GUERILLA TACTICSTIP #3

When the melody jumps (versus walking up & down by steps)

the jump is called an INTERVAL.

Use these familiar tunes to help identify Intervals

‘cuz it’s a JUNGLE out there!!

Page 48: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Use these familiar songs to identify INTERVALSScale Intervals and Common Tunes (Remember, you can always sing a scale to get to your Target Note!!)

Interval Key of C TuneMajor 2nd C - D - (e) Do a (Deer)Major 3rd C - E - (g) Hey Jude (Chorus)

Perfect 4th C - F (C-C-D-E-F) Louie, Louie (Lean On Me)

Perfect 5th C - G Star WarsMajor 6th C - (e - g) - A Anchors AwayMajor 7th C - (e - g) - B PBS / (Bali Hai) Octave C - C Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Page 49: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Don’t Be CONFUSED!!

When someone refers to an Interval (“You sing the 5th!”) you need to know...

Are they referring to the KEY CENTER? (sing a 5th above the Key Note, Note 1)

OR...

Are they referring to the CURRENT CHORD? (sing a 5th above the Root of the Current Chord)

BIG DIFFERENCE!

It’s OK to ask

Page 50: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Let’s add another Note 1 - 2 - 3 - 5 - 6

Listen to NOTE 6 along with 1-2-3-5 in these songs

“Anchors Away” [ 1-3-5-6 ]

“Open the Eyes of My Heart” (Verse + Chorus)

“Heart of Worship” 5-5-5-5-1-1-6-5-3-2...

Children’s Playground Chant: 5-3 5-3 5-3-6-5-3

“Amazing Grace” (sounds different using the octave BELOW Note 1)

Page 51: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Page 77: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Identifying BASS NOTES

*STEP #1 toward analyzing Chords*Use the same approach as Melody

Page 78: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

POP QUIZ- BASS

>I will play a Chord Progression

>You write down the BASS LINE(leave 2 lines of space above your Bass Line)

Do you still have the Key Center of ‘C’ Major in your head?

Page 79: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Pop Quiz- BASSListen and write the LETTER NAMES

of the BASS LINE (in ‘C’ Major)

Page 80: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Pop Quiz- Bass

Bass = C-F-G-C--F-G-C

Page 81: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

GUERILLA EAR

TRAININGPop quiz-BASS‣ You’ve got the BASSics!‣ You can write Melody!

Now you’re just 1 stepaway from knowing the

CHORDS!!

Page 82: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

CHORD CONSTRUCTIONMost of the time the BASS NOTE is the ROOT of the CHORD

ROOT = the Name of the Chord,

the Bottom Note of the Triad,

the “1” of the ‘1-3-5’

or the “C” of the ‘C-E-G’ [C Triad]

in a C major chord the ROOT is ‘C’

Page 83: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Now add the Melody Let’s take the same progression...

you already wrote down the BASS LINE

so you already know 1 note in each Chord

and it most likely is the ROOT (the name of the Chord)

>>>Now use your Ear Training skills and write the Melody on top of your Bass Line

Page 84: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Pop Quiz-MelodyListen and write the LETTER NAMES of the MELODY over the BASS LINE

Pop Quiz-Bass + Melody

Melody=E-C-D-E--A-B-GBass = C-F-G-C--F-G-C

Page 86: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

CHORD CONSTRUCTIONNow we know the BASS NOTE (probably the ROOT of the CHORD)

and we know the MELODY NOTE (probably another Chord Tone)

Now we have 2 of the 3 notes in each Triad

Use the “SING-HOLD-MOVE-DOES IT FIT?” method

We’ll start with the PRIMARY TRIADS 1-4-5 = C-F-G; all MAJOR

Now fill in the remaining note in each Triad and name each Chord - GO!

Page 87: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Page 89: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

CHORD CONSTRUCTIONa QUICK WRAP-UP:

the BASS NOTE is probably the ROOT of the CHORD

but the Bass Note is sometimes NOT the ROOT

the Bass Note could be the 3rd or the 5th; the ‘E’ or the ‘G’ of the C Major Chord (or even the 7th!!)

These are called SLASH CHORDS or INVERSIONS, C/E (3rd in the Bass) and C/G (5th in the Bass)

Page 90: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

CHORD CONSTRUCTION4 Types of Triads - Triad is the basic 3 note Chord

Major Triad - 48% of pop music Primary Triads built on 1 and 4 and 5 are naturally MAJOR

Minor Triad - 48% of pop music Secondary Triads built on 2 and 3 and 6 are naturally minor

Augmented Triad - rare Doesn’t occur naturally in the Major Scale

Diminished Triad - medium rare Triads built on 7 are naturally diminished, but rarely used

Page 94: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

PRIMARY and SECONDARY TriadsWe started with the PRIMARY TRIADS

1-4-5 = C-F-G; all MAJOR

Then we added INVERSIONS-SLASH CHORDS, (where the Bass Note is something other than the Root;

like the 3rd or 5th of the chord)

Now we will add in the SECONDARY TRIADS 2-3-6 = D minor - Emin - Am; all minor

“Minor” can be abbreviated ‘min’ or just ‘m’. *Chord Names with the Letter only are

assumed to be MAJOR Chords.

GUERILLA EAR

TRAININGUltra... Mega... whatever...

Pop quizWay To Go CHAMP!!!

You RAAWWK!!!

But wait -

Page 101: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Wait a minute -

What about those other 5 notes?the BLACK KEYS?!?!?

Page 102: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

In ‘C’ Major,on the Keyboard...The 7 WHITE KEYS form a

‘C’ Major Scale when you start on ‘C’

The 5 BLACK KEYS are notes that are outside of the ‘C’ Major Scale

(if you start a scale on any note other than ‘C’, you will need some of these Black Keys to keep your new scale sounding “Major”)

You can ‘borrow’ these “Outside Notes” to spice up the

sound of a Major Key

Page 103: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

the 5 BLACK NOTES are outside the key of ‘C’ Major

...but just for that reason, they each have a

particularly startling effect when you use them

Page 104: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

The “Outsiders”E flat (D#)

Changing the normal ‘E’ to ‘E flat’ changes the ‘C Major’ chord to

a “C minor” chord -

To generalize, MAJOR KEYS sound HAPPY -

Minor Keys sound sad

*Remember the Wild West Saloon?!? Suddenly in walks ‘Black Bart’;

the banjo player turns to the piano player and says... “Hey Willy, here come da Bad Guys - Minor Key!!”

Page 105: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

Listen to the Difference...Tell me if you hear

>‘E natural’ (a ‘C Major’’ chord) or>‘Eb (a ‘C minor’ chord)

Page 106: 3 Guerilla Ear Training

The “Outsiders” C#(D flat)

Changing the normal ‘C’ to ‘C#’ changes the ‘A minor’ chord to an “A MAJOR” chord -

*This creates a Strong Pull up to the D minor Chord-

*this is called a ‘Secondary Dominant’

The “Outsiders” F#(G flat)

Changing the normal ‘F’ to ‘F#’ changes the ‘D minor’ chord to a “D Major” chord -

*It also creates a Strong Pull to the G Major Chord,

another example of a ‘Secondary Dominant’

Changing the normal ‘G’ to ‘G#’ changes the ‘E minor’ chord to an

“E Major” chord -

*This creates a Strong Pull up to the A minor Chord,

another example of a ‘Secondary Dominant’

OR... moving down it turns the ‘F Major’ Chord into

an ‘F minor’ Chord; a sad spot in the progression.
