Eighth Annual Faculty-Staff Auction

During my Institutional IPPE Experience, my preceptor allowed me to work alongside an

anesthesiologist in the surgery department. Here I was able to see a port insertion, a tumor removal,

and a hysterectomy done by a da Vinci® robot system. I was also able to see the different

medications used for different types of surgeries, depending on the amount of sedation required. It

was a different experience from what I was expecting. They also allowed me to attend safety

meetings with nursing and other staff. Having previously worked in a hospital for almost four

years, I was worried that I wouldn't get as much out of my institutional experience. These

experiences made it interesting and made me think about different aspects of the hospital pharmacy

that I hadn’t experienced before. Amanda Ashley , P3 ST

This year’s Faculty-Staff Auction, sponsored by Alpha Zeta Omega pharmacy fraternity, was another

success. The auction, which consisted of over twenty items, along with generous donations from

Hometown Pharmacy and UT alumna Susan Middendorf, raised over $8,000. All the proceeds go toward

purchasing medical supplies and medications for the mission trips to Honduras and Guatemala.

In March 2014, APPE students Sarah Tegowski and Matthew Lengel were accompanied Dr. Diane

Cappelletty and Dr. Richard Paat along with medical students, physician assistants and nurse practitioners

on the medical mission to Honduras (photos below). Also, in July 2013, students Kyle Rako and Abigail

Rabatin were able to accompany Jessica Pukulski and Dr. Paat on their medical mssion to Guatemala.

Special thanks go to Dr. Vince Mauro, who serves annually as our auctioneer and brings laughter to all

who attend.

The University of Toledo SNPhA chapter

represented with great enthusiasm at the SNPhA

(Student National Pharmaceutical Organization)

regional meeting in Columbus on March 14th and

15th. A total of 14 pharmacy students, ranging

from P1 to P4, attended this meeting, participated

in competitions, networked with other pharmacy

students, worked with other schools to pass

resolutions and represented UT-CPPS in the best

possible manner.

Niyati Kadia (P4) and Shewit Ghidey (P3) won

third place in the Kroger Clinical Skills

Competition in which 19 teams from pharmacy

schools all over the United States participated. In

order to mimic real life situations, this clinical

skills competition was about counseling a patient

in just 5 minutes. The key to UT-CPPS students

winning such competitions is the knowledge and

skill they have gained from doing a variety of

activities during P2 and P3 PPD labs.

A team from UT SNPhA, led by Hanin Chouman

(P2) and Chris Jeric (P3), came up with a plan to

help the community as a part of the Wal-Mart

Prescription for Service Competition. They were

announced as the SNPhA Region 3 winners at

the regional meeting who will now execute the

plan with the provided funding ($2,500) and

continue to compete with four other teams at the

National level. This depicts the passion of UT’s

pharmacy students of giving back to the

community.

Nicole Fabiilli (P1) participated in the business

sessions as a delegate and worked with other

student pharmacists, to pass resolutions which

have the potential to bring positive changes in the

pharmacy world. Her ideas and confidence were

appreciated at the meeting. Idris Yakubu (P4),

being a national SNPhA leader, played a huge

role in organizing such an amazing conference

and encouraging pharmacy students at UT-CPPS

to attend the regional meeting. Thus, UT

SNPhA’s achievements at the regional

conference will continue to inspire future leaders

and motivate pharmacy students to participate in

such regional and national meetings.

On February 7, 2014, faculty, students, staff and alumni met on the basketball court to benefit the Miracle

League of Toledo. The Miracle League is a special needs baseball league in which participants have a

specially designed field that allows for walking, running, wheelchairs, walkers,

etc.

The Game, a true nail biter, was won in the last 14 seconds by the students with

the final score being Students 47 - Faculty 48. The Miracle League was the true

winner, as donations from ticket

sales, the 50/50 drawing, and t-shirt

sales were all raised for the benefit

of the Miracle League.
