Tigers are beautiful creatures. You may have seen them in a

zoo or a wildlife park. How much do you know about them?

What is a tiger?What is a tiger?What is a tiger?What is a tiger?The tiger is the largest member of the cat family. Tigers have distinctive black and orange stripes and long whiskers. Each tiger has a different pattern of stripes. In the wild, tigers are hard to see because of their striped fur which blends in with their surroundings. This helps them to catch their prey. Because of their razor sharp teeth and powerful muscles they are very successful predators.

Tigers are carnivores. They hunt, kill and feed on large animals such as deer, wild pigs, antelope, elephant calves and buffalo.

Tigers are solitary hunters. Most hunt for food alone at night but some hunt during the day or early morning. They quietly stalk their prey until they are close enough to pounce – then they kill their victim with a bite to the neck or back of the head.

Tigers are found in parts of Asia, Russia, China and India. They can be found in different types of wild habitats where they can find water, shelter and food.

There are different types of tigers. Siberian tigers live in the cold Russian forests which are often covered with snow, so they have a slightly thicker fur than other types of tiger. Tigers that live in Asia are

smaller than other tigers. Tigers like to spend most of their time alone, roaming their massive territories looking for food. They mark their territory by scratching marks into trees with their claws.

Nine different types of tigers are known but three of these are now extinct. There are more tigers in captivity than there are in the wild.

Poachers who hunt tigers for their skins, claws and other body parts to make traditional medicines are responsible for the loss of many tigers. Tigers need a huge area to roam around in. When humans hunt them or destroy their habitat, tigers cannot survive in the wild.
