ASU Vol. 2, No. 2 (Dec 2014) CAMPUS NEWS 35 A One-day National Conference on “Emerging Trends in Drug Research and Development” was organized by Lakshmi Narain College of Technology-Pharmacy, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on 23 rd August, 2014 which was sponsored by M. P. Council for Science and Technology (MPCST), Bhopal. Chief Guest Prof. (Dr.) S. P. Gupta, (Senior Professor, NITTTR, Bhopal) and Mr. Anupam Chouskey (Secretary, LNCT group) graced the inaugural function. Eminent speakers Prof (Dr.) S. P. Gupta (Senior Professor, NITTTR, Bhopal), Dr. Deepti Jain (Associate Professor, Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV), Bhopal) and Dr. Harish Rajak (Assistant Professor, Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur) enlightened the delegates on various aspects on drug research and drug development. About 170 delegates participated from different parts of the country. Research scholars, UG and PG students presented their research and review articles in the form of poster presentations. The invited Guest Dr. Prateek K. Jain (Associate Professor, Adina Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sagar), Dr. Yuvraj Dangi (Associate Professor, Sagar Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SIPS), Sagar) and Principal, LNCP, Dr. A. K. Singhai distributed the prizes and certificates to the awardees. Finally, organizing secretary, Dr. G. K. Saraogi proposed the vote of thanks. This National conference was inaugurated by Dr. Bijoy Kundu, Chief Scientist & Head, Medicinal & Process Chemistry Division, Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow. The proceedings started with welcome address by Dr. Sabitha M, Principal, Amrita School of Pharmacy followed by a keynote address stressing the relevance of the topic in today’s scenario by Dr. Shantikumar V Nair, Dean Research, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University. Felicitations from Dr. Sapna Shrikumar, President of the Kerala Chapter of APTI & Principal, Moulana College of Pharmacy and Dr. Sanjeev K. Singh, Medical Superintendant, AIMS followed this address. The technical portion of the conference consisted of informative and rigorous scientific lectures from Dr. Bijoy Kundu on the topic 'Drug discovery: The Search for a Needle in Haystack'; Dr. Debashis Mitra on the topic ‘Anti-HIV Drug Discovery: Past, Present and Future’ and Dr. Asoke Banerji on ‘Changing Scenario of Natural Product Research’. The conference was made more interactive through brainstorming sections handled by (a) Professors D Sriram and P Yogeeswari on 'Retrosynthesis' and (b) Senior Scientists D Vasudevan and S Radhakrishnan on 'Structural elucidation of organic compounds'. The two-day event was brought to an apt close with a valedictory ceremony that was graced by Dr. K Krishnakumar, Principal, St. James Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, who gave away the participation certificates and cash awards for the three best posters. Research was the convener of the seminar who welcomed the gathering. Dr. Pulok K. Mukherjee, President of APTI, West Bengal Branch inaugurated the seminar. He addressed a session on ‘Overview of Pharmaceutical Profession & Research in India’. Col. (Dr.) Soumen Basu, Medical Director, Medica Superspeciality Hospital was another key speaker who discussed about the ‘Future Perspectives of Hospital Pharmacists’. Mr. Arunava Sen, Zonal Training Manager, Roche, India shared his views on ‘Significance of Branding of Research Products in Indian Market’. Dr. Piyali Datta Chakraborty, Research Scientist, Albert David Limited, Kolkata explained her research experience on the project ‘Aqueous Extract of Human Placenta’. Mr. Amit Sarkar, General Manager (Personnel) addressed a session for sharing his rich experience on ‘Recruitment and Selection Process in HR Perspective’. There were more than 300 participants and more than 100 poster presentations from all around India. Four posters were awarded as best posters and finally, vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Sajal Kumar Jha, co-convener of the seminar.

World Pharmacist Day 2014 was celebrated by Geetanjali Institute of Pharmacy, Geetanjali University, Udaipur, Rajasthan on 25th September, 2014. The programme started with welcome speech by Dr. Ashok Dashora, Director, Geetanjali Institute of Pharmacy. He highlighted the importance of continuing education for updating the skills, competence and knowledge. He briefed the gathering about the role of Pharmacists in the Health Care System. He stated that the mission of the pharmacy profession is to render services to the humanity. The public places great trust in the knowledge, skill and professional judgment of the pharmacist and therefore the pharmacist needs to ensure high standards of professional conduct, up to-date knowledge and professional competence. Since the Pharmaceutical sector in India is witnessing tremendous growth, issues of quality and effectiveness need to be urgently addressed. Dr. Dashora also emphasized that the pharmacist shall address the needs of the society and individual patient. Pharmacists can make a vital contribution to the patient care by counseling, providing drug information to doctors, nurses, monitoring drug therapy etc. In this way, pharmacists can play a very active role in health sector reform process. Geetanjali Institute of Pharmacy, Geetanjali University, Udaipur organized various events like literary competition,

cultural and other including general awareness rally to celebrate the World Pharmacist Day. Also blood donation camp was organized at blood bank of Geetanjali Medical College and Campus, Udaipur. More than 20 students and staff donated the blood during the blood donation camp.

A Two-day MPCST sponsored National Seminar on “Recent Advancement in Drug Delivery Techniques and Drug Designing” was organized by School of Pharmacy and Research, People’s University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on 26th-27th September, 2014. Seminar was inaugurated by Dr. N.S. Yadav, Group Director, Dental Academy, Peoples group. In his speech, he told that such type of programme will benefit the students and increase their knowledge in respect to latest trends in drug delivery systems. Dr. Milind Pande, Principal of the hosting college, told in his welcome address that SMART medicines have tremendous scope in pharmaceutical industry for treatment of diseases like AIDS, Cancer, Diabetes etc. During the seminar, inaugural lecture was delivered by Dr. Akhlesh Singhai, Principal, Lakshmi Narain College of Technology-Pharmacy, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh and presented his views on ‘Colon Targeted Drug Delivery System’. Another lecture was delivered by Dr. R. K. Maheshwari, Professor, Department of Pharmacy, Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS), Indore on ‘Applications of Hydrotrophy in Pharmaceutical Industry’. Lecture of Dr. R. K. Maheshwari was followed by talk of Dr. Vimal Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacognosy, NIRMA University, Chandlodia, Gota, Ahmedabad, Gujarat on ‘Supercritical Fluid Extraction Methods and Their Applications in Pharmacy Industry’. After the lectures, oral and poster presentations were also given by different colleges students around Bhopal. Dr Richa Jain, Victoriya, Shubham Tiwari and Shalini Agrihari won first and second prizes in oral/poster sessions. During valedictory, prize distribution was done by Dr. V. K. Pandya, Vice Chancellor, People’s University, Bhopal. He appreciated the efforts made and congratulated all organizing committee members for accomplishment of seminar. Around 200 students and many faculty members witnessed the national seminar.

A Two-day National Seminar on “Herbal Drug Scene: Issues in National and International Herbal Drug Regulations” was organized by Bhagyoday Tirth Pharmacy College, Sagar on 11th-12th November, 2014. The seminar was sponsored by ICMR, New Delhi and supported by Society of Pharmacognosy. The seminar was attended by two hundred sixty delegates consisting UG & PG students, research scholars from academia, industries and government organization from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Prof. C.K. Kokate, Vice Chancellor, KLE University, Belgaum was the chief guest and Prof. S.P. Vyas, Vice Chancellor, Dr. H.S. Gour Central University, Sagar presided over the inaugural ceremony of seminar, Prof. R.K. Agrawal, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Dr. H.S. Gour University and Prof. D.V. Kohli, Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. H.S. Gour University were the Guest of Honor at this function. Mr. Sourabh Jain, Asst. Professor & convener of seminar welcomed all the participants and guests, introduced the dignitaries on the dias and honored them with floral bouquet. Prof. V. K. Dixit, Academic dean of college and organizing secretary of seminar gave a background and the scope of the topic. The keynote address of the seminar was given by Prof. C.K Kokate, who emphasized on the need of regulation, quality control and standardization of herbs and herbal products to safeguard the interest of patients and also to ensure safety. First scientific session was started by Dr. Umesh Patil, Associate Professor, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. H.S. Gour University, Sagar who delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Challenges and International Trends in Regulation of Herbal Medicinal Products’. In the second scientific session, Dr. Lohar DR, Ex. Director, Ayurvedic Pharmacopeoia Laborotary, Govt. of India delivered a lecture on topic ‘Regulatory Aspect of Herbal Drugs’. On the second day, Dr. Nitin Jain, Scientist-E & Joint Director, Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi, delivered second plenary lecture on Regulatory requirement for recombinant biopharmaceuticals. It was followed by a very informative talk on “Legal and Regulatory Aspects of Phytopharmaceuticals in India" by Dr. Nagendra Singh Chouhan, Senior Scientific Officer, Drugs Testing Laboratory and Research Centre (State Goverment Lab of AYUSH). A poster session was also arranged during the seminar in which 110 poster were displayed by participants of seminar. In valedictory function, brief review on evaluation of posters and papers was given by Dr. Ankur Vaidya and declared the winners. Winners were

awarded with certificate and memento by Chief Guest of valedictory function, Prof. S.C. Chaturvedi, Director, Shri Aurbindo College of Pharmacy, Indore, Prof. A.K. Singhai, Retd. Professor, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Science and Dr. A.K. Omray, President, Ideal Cures, Mumbai as Guest of honour. Dr. Badri Prasad, Retd Professor, Dr. H.S. Gour University and Dr. J.K. Jain, Professor, Dr. H.S. Gour University, Sagar also addressed the gathering during the valedictory function as special guest of the occasion. Mr. Sugam Kothari, Chairman, Bhagyoday Tirth Pharmacy College gave conclusive address of the seminar. Finally, review of arrangements, hospitality, resource persons and content of seminars were received from delegates and vote of thanks was given by Dean and Head, Prof. Vinod Kumar Dixit.

A Health Check Up Camp was organized by Janvi Diabetes Care and Medicine Centre at Faculty of Pharmacy, VNS Group of Institutions, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on 21st November, 2014 during the National Pharmacy Week 2014. In this camp, BMI Index, hemoglobin, blood group detection, diabetes, thyroid, lipid profile, cholesterol testing was done. The camp was witnessed by faculty members of hosting institution Dr. Vipin V. Dhote (Associate Director), Mr. Pritam Kumar Saraf (Registrar), Dr. Shailesh Jain, Dr. M.S. Sudheesh, Dr. P.K. Singour, Dr. Rita Mourya, Dr. Rajesh Singh Pawar, Dr. Deepa Iyer and well appreciated by Directors of VNS Group of Institutions.

to meet the healthcare needs of the people. Also, it provides an opportunity for pharmacy professionals to make the general public awareness about the profession in providing healthcare services, as compared with other medical and related profession. On this occasion, Geetanjali Institute of Pharmacy (GIP) organized various events like literary competition (Poetry writing and Recitation, Hand Writing, Debate, Collage making, Ad-Mad, Best out of Waste, Pharma Quiz, Just a Minute, Master Chef, Card Making/Pot decoration & Poster Making); cultural (song/dance competition, drama & fashion show); sports activities (Cricket, Short put, Carom and Chess) and other including general awareness rally and scientific session (guest lectures) to celebrate the NPW-2014. The program was inaugurated on 17th November, 2014 by lighting the traditional lamp by Mr. Bhupendra Mandlia, Registrar, Geetanjali University, Udaipur followed by Saraswati vandana. A scientific lecture on “QSAR and Its application in the Field of Pharmacy” was delivered by Mr. Neeraj Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Geetanjali Institute of Pharmacy (GIP), Geetanjali University, Manwa Khera, Udaipur on November 21, 2014 who enlightened the gathering about drug discovery including preclinical, clinical trials (Phase I, II, III) & post marketing FDA approval/toxicity/pre-formulation and formulation studies. Celebrations ended with a free medical and Blood group detection camps where blood groups were detected and drugs like antimalarials, antibiotics and general medicines donated to the needy person. On 23rd November, 2014, during the valedictory at Narmada Devi Auditorium, Dean, Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Dashora inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp and gave the welcome address. The chief guest of the event was Girdhari Lal Garg, Project Officer, Department of Science and Technology, Kota, Rajasthan who imparted knowledge about the importance of pharmacist in the society. In addition, Mr. Rajeev Pandya, GM (HR), Geetanjali University highlighted the need and importance of pharmacist in the development of a healthy nation. Various prizes were distributed to the winners of different activities conducted during the week and academic performance during the year. Finally, program coordinator, Ms. Udichi Kataria conveyed the sincere thanks and advised the students to do hard work in order to improve the quality of the teaching-learning process.

A One-day Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) Program was organized by Haryana State Pharmacy Council (HSPC) at Maharishi Markandeshwar College of Pharmacy (MMCP), MM University, Mullana, Ambala, Haryana on 23rd November, 2014 (Sunday). Continuing Pharmacy Education Programme is being conducted with the aim of making participants aware with current trends, practical aspects and challenges of pharmacy practice in global context. In changing scenario, the diseases are becoming more complex and therapy/prescription patterns are rapidly changing. This type of refresher course/CPE is compulsory for new/renewal of registration with state pharmacy council. Total 233 registered pharmacists from different parts of Haryana participated in the program and enriched their knowledge about patient counseling and rational medicine use. Dr Yashpal Singla (Chairman, CPE) and Dr. Pankaj Jain (CEO, Vertex Solutions) delivered lectures to update the knowledge domain of fellow registered pharmacist at the programme. Sh. K.C. Goyal, President, Haryana State Pharmacy Council inaugurated the function with lightning of the lamp along with Dr. Vipin Saini, Director & Dean Research, Dr. M.S. Rathore, Professor and Convener of CPE, MM College of Pharmacy and Sh. Rajkumar of Pharmacist Association, Ambala. Sh. K.C. Goyal emphasized the need of such programs in his presidential address for updating the knowledge of pharmacists for better health care of the society. Sh. Tarsem Garg, Chancellor of MM University, Mullana, Ambala extended well wishes for successful completion of the program. Dr Vipin Saini welcomed all participants on behalf of MM University, Mullana, Ambala. Dr. M.S. Rathore along with team extended the vote of thanks at the end of the program.

PAPERS PRESENTED - USA

Dr. Sushil K. Kashaw, Assistant Professor, Division of Medicinal and Computational Chemistry, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. H.S Gour Central University, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh attended the AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition 2014 at San Diego, USA between 2nd-6th November, 2014. The meeting was organized by American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientist, United States.

Dr. Kashaw presented his work entitled “Synthesis of Some Novel Bioactives 3-[5-Substituted-1,3,4-Thiadiazole-2-yl]-2-Styrylquinazoline-4(3H)-ones as Potential Anticonvulsant Compounds” and “QSAR Studies on 4-Substituted Quinazoline Derivatives for their Antimalarial Activity”. He was the recipient of the travel grant support from DST-SERB, Govt. of India, New Delhi. Dr. Kashaw is recipient of ‘Outstanding Oral Presentation Award’ – a APP Award given in the memory of ‘Late Mr. Manas Tripathi’.
