Realizing that in unity there is strength,
we, as members of the Anchor Club,
are resolved:
To work together in friendship and loyalty;
To render service to our home, school
and community,
knowing this course will take us over
a sea of happiness;
To steer our ship of life by the bright stars
of Hope and Faith;
To follow words of guidance from parents,
teachers and Pilot friends, for these, as
gleams from the Lighthouse of Truth, are
words of wisdom;
To set full sail through channels of
achievement which lead us to the port of
success; and,
When our ship of life is tossed by the
tempests of misunderstandings
and the angry winds of injustice,
we will cast our Anchor of courage, wisdom
and trust to hold us fast.

International Anchor Conference
Dallas, TX
July 13-17, 2011
Operation: Shoebox Surprise
The Anchor Convention in Dallas in July will feature a
service project currently known as the Shoebox
Surprise. The project involves a local children's home
and a visit from our Anchors giving shoeboxes filled
with surprises for the children. We are requesting
Pilots to please bring shoeboxes (if you are driving)
items (if you are flying) or your own shoebox surprise.
Categories for gifts: Designate girl or boy and the
ages 2-4; 5-9; or 10-14
Suggestions for items to fill each box:
Toys: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals,
harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, toys that light up or
make a noise (with batteries)
School Supplies: pens, pencils/sharpeners, crayons,
markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or
paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books,
etc.
Hygiene Items: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar
soap (in plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc.
Other: hard candy and lollipops, mints, gum, t-shirts,
socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry,
watches, flashlights (with extra batteries)
Of course: No used or damaged items; war-related
items such as toy guns, knives, military figures;
chocolate or food; out-of-date candy; liquids or
lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items
such as glass containers or aerosol cans.
If you will not be attending Pilot International
Convention, but would like to participate in the
project, ask if you can send items along with your
sponsoring Pilot Club delegate who is going to Dallas.
Warming up the Group
Station 1
In Vale, Colorado, you will find two sets of skis. Divide into
groups, stand on the skis and move from one marker to the next.
On the way down, you may talk to your team. On the way back,
you must devise another way of communicating. Once the task
has been completed, discuss communication styles.
At the North Pole, one person dresses up as Santa Claus. The
other participants will tell Santa how they are going to
spread cheer and good wishes in their Anchor Club. What act
of kindness are you going to do for your fellowman?Station 2
You don't need to wear a Lederhosen costume for this event.
Climb to the top of the ladder, cross over, and climb down the
other side. You must do this activity while holding the hand of a
partner and you must be on the same rung as your partner.
Communication is the name of the game especially at the top of
the ladder. As a group, look around and take a quick swing on the
ropes that you see behind you.Station 3
Welcome to Anchorville. You will find letters that will spell out
sentences about the Anchor Club. Do not mix the letters
together that are found in individual envelopes. You have
three sentences to put together. Upon completion, stack the
letters back as you found them for the next team.Station 4
At Water Country USA, you have been working hard. Take a
relaxing break and refresh with a bottle of water. As you enjoy
this ten minute break, share with your group how you spent
your weekend. Look around and not far from you is Walton
Mountain. Each team member must cross over the wall and
only the first and last person to cross may touch the wall with
their hands. Use strategy and trust the group.Station 5
When you arrive in Blindman's Bluff, select a partner and one of you will be
blindfolded. After you have blindfolded your partner, make this station into an
obstacle course. Place the obstacles provided on the course under the picnic canopy.
Now instruct your partner verbally to an obstacle. They must pick it up, turn around in
a circle and carry the obstacle with them as they move on to the next and the next.
Now change positions with your partner and allow them to direct you. Which team
picked up the most? What role did you enjoy the most-being directed or directing?
Does this hold true to how you interact in your Anchor Club?
Station 6
In Baltimore, each person on your team must throw a ball
through all the loops hanging from the bar. How can your
partners help make this obstacle easy? How can this be applied
to your Anchor Club? As you walk, share a successful Anchor
Club interaction or project that you received assistance with.Station 7
Welcome to the Life and Balance Center. Walk on the balance beam
in a forward motion. As you complete going forward on the beam,
walk backwards. As you walk, tell the group of the things you are
currently balancing at school. Now after everyone has completed
this task, you must all together walk the beam holding on the
person in front of you. Coordination and teamwork are vital.Station 8
In Independence, Missouri, you will discover the American
flag. As a large group, say the Pledge of Allegiance and sing
The Star Spangled Banner. Now, tell the group something that
you have observed about another in the group today that was
meaningful to you or share a meaningful patriotic experience.Station 9
