WELCOME

The Lacombe and District Music Festival Association would like to welcome you to our 34th Annual Music Festival! It is our hope that students will enjoy performing for and learning from the fine slate of adjudicators who are taking part in this Festival! The public is invited and encouraged to attend the performances at various venues as listed in this program. Admission at each session is by donation, in the basket at the door. Thank you!

Notes for our Participants:

All entrants must be ready to perform (warmed up or tuned up if needed) 15 to 20 minutes before the scheduled performance time. The adjudicator could be ahead of schedule due to cancellations so the Class times listed are approximate. Entrants will perform in the order listed in the Music Festival program. Please be sure to bring a published copy of your selection to give to the adjudicator’s secretary prior to the performance. The first bar of each line in your music scores must be numbered. Each book should be clearly marked with the class number and competitor’s name. You are encouraged to perform your selection from memory. However, if you need a copy of your selection, it also must be a published copy. PHOTOCOPIES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. Failure to comply may result in disqualification. Each participant will be introducing themselves and the selection they will be performing. Festival entrants are responsible for providing their own accompanists. Please pick up your music/speech selection and adjudication sheet from the adjudicator’s secretary following the completion of your class, if the same have not been given to you. Do not approach or speak to the adjudicator.

Marking System: The grades used in marking are as follows:

90% - and over (Gold seal with a red ribbon) - Superior

85% - 89% (Gold seal) – Distinction

80% - 84% (Red seal) – Honours

Below 80% (Blue seal) – Merit

A grade of 80% or over must be achieved to receive a First Place Certificate. There will be no First place ties. All contestants will receive a certificate and participation ribbon.

Policy for days on which school is cancelled: If schools are closed due to bad weather all school groups coming from their school to perform during school hours will be cancelled. HOWEVER, all solos, duets, ensembles, and community groups will continue as scheduled. If in doubt call the Festival Office at 403-782-4563.

Notes for our Audience:

Please remember to silence your cell phones while attending performances.

The use of flash cameras is not permitted. Video recordings may only be done of your own competitor. Adjudications may not be recorded in any manner.

Please remain seated during performances and adjudications.

Our Festival is a registered charity under Canada Revenue Agency, funded by entry fees, grants and donations. All our committee members are volunteers and we have no paid staff. Our entry fees are kept minimal by the generosity of our supporters. Please be generous with your donations in the admission baskets at the venues. Donation cheques are tax receiptable.

If you are interested in joining our Festival Committee, contact our committee chairman Norm Start for more information. We will begin planning for the 2016 Festival at our April meeting.

If you are interested in joining the volunteers who help during the festival (no committee commitment necessary) contact our volunteer coordinator Jen Loewen.

MURRAY VISSCHER

Murray Visscher has performed a wide variety of music for audiences in Canada and the United States. Although his formal education is primarily in Classical music, his diverse background has put him on stage with jazz performers such as Ian MacDougall and Juno award winner Hugh Fraser. Notable performances include the premier live radio broadcast of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint, an event that featured American guitarist David Tanenbaum as soloist. Murray performs frequently with colleagues Ralph Maier and Brad Mahon as “The Oberon Guitar Trio”. In 2009 the trio released their debut cd entitled “Music of Our Time” and since then numerous works have been written for and dedicated to the group. In 2010 Murray released his first solo recording, “The Early Romantic Guitar” (Titania) featuring some of the less familiar works of the 19th century performed on a replica of an instrument from the period. Daniel Bolshoy describes the recording as “…a valuable resource for guitar lovers andstudents….”. Murray Visscher is in demand as a performer and educator and is currently on the faculties of Ambrose University and Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary. Murray is the Coordinator of Guitar studies for the Conservatory’s “Academy for Gifted Youth” as well as the director of Mount Royal’s annual “Classical GuitarfestWest”. He adjudicates frequently at festivals and competitions throughout Western Canada and has served on the editing team for the Royal Conservatory of Music’s guitar series “Bridges”.
