Details of the Activity

1 Title: The Art of Narrative: Text and Image in Indian Painting

2 Learning Objectives:

This course offers an opportunity to delve into the art of painting in South Asia bystudying South Asian texts and images together. We will practice close-looking atpaintings based on textual sources while reading Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Islamic, andsecular texts in translation. The primary goal of the course is to understand the processesof creating images and the choices made while depicting textual materials in an imageformat in pre-modern South Asia.

3 Learning Outcomes:

This kind of study of the transference of text to an image will impart the knowledge ofunderstanding the importance of narrative art in South Asian artistic traditions and thecultural spheres of artistic production. The students will also get acquainted withresearch methodology of using primary sources and secondary scholarship, which willhone their research skills in the study of Indian Art.

Ms. Vaishnavi Patil is an alumna of St. Xavier's College,

Mumbai, currently pursuing a PhD from Harvard

University, Cambridge, US.

She has presented papers in various international

conferences including the University of Oxford China

Humanities Graduate Conference, UK (2018); Biennale

Conference, European Association of Chinese Studies,

Russia (2016); Standford Berkeley Graduate Student

Conference on Pre- Modern Chinese Humanities (2016).

She is highly interested in the artistic interaction

between South Asia and East Asia through the Buddhist

world and has undertaken some research in the same

field.

She is currently working as a fellow teacher with

Harvard University's History of Art and Architecture

department.

She is also an Arts Fellow at GSAS Student Center at the

Harvard University.
