Law Program committee Minutes from the J u l y 7 , 1985, meeting were d i s t r i b u t e d t o RLG Coordinators on November 22 . convers ion , among o t h e r s . The most important p r o j e c t s i n t h i s a r e a a r e t h e I n t e r - n a t i o n a l Law Recon P r o j e c t (Corne l l General and Law a r e t h e main c o n t r i b u t o r s ; Michigan, Pennsylvania , Columbia, and Minnesota Law a r e a l s o p a r t i c i p a n t s ) and the C o n s t i t u t i o n a l Law P r o j e c t (Corne l l Law i s the main c o n t r i b u t o r , as Well as Stanford and Minnesota) . Beginning w i t h 1983/84, RLG has kept recon r eco rds and t apes i n a shadow f i l e . These t a p e s could be sent t o Pe te r Ward who could produce s p e c i a l b i b l i o g r a p h i e s from them. Members of t h e LPC were encouraged t o th ink about poss ib l e uses f o r t hese tapes .

Working w i t h h e r , I W i l l g a i n e x p e r i e n c e i n making t r e a t m e n t d e c i s i o n s f o r rare materials and i n r ev iewing SUPPlieS and equipment t o se t up a c o n s e r v a t i o n l a b . Academic law l i b r a r i a n s have more c o n t a c t w i th o t h e r p r o f e s s i o n a l s a t t h e u n i v e r s i t y l e v e l and th rough t h e AALL c o n v e n t i o n s . The re is o f t e n more c o n t i n u i t y i n t h e ca t a l . og ing s t a f f s and more o p p o r t u n i t y f o r formal on-the- job t r a i n i r i g . S i n c e t h e law s c h o o l s u s u a l l y belong t o one of t h e c a t a l o g i n g u t i l i t i e s , t h e r e is a c o n s t a n t p r e s s u r e t o f o l l o w s t a n d r a d p r a c t i c e s as i n t e r p r e t e d by L C . A l so , i n t e g r a t e d p r o c e s s i n g sys t ems such as GEAC, NOTIS, and BLIS are more common now, and t h e academic law c a t a l o g e r s are f i n d i n g i t even more n e c e s s a r y t o s t a n d a r d i z e p r a c t i c e s and p rocedures w i t h t h e i r main l i b r a r i e s . They need t o keep up w i t h t h e l a tes t developments i n c a t a l o g i n g as well as keep ing up w i t h t h e i r back logs .

The Working Group a n a l y z e d t h e v a r i o u s needs and developed a model r e p r e s e n t i n g t h e c o n t i n u i n g e d u c a t i o n needs of t h e membership: (1) Basic e d u c a t i o n i n c a t a l o g i n g ; ( 2 ) T r a i n i n g i n h a n d l i n g s p e c i a l i z e d l e g a l materials; ( 3 ) Advanced t r a i n i n g i n c a t a l o g i n g problems a t tQe n a t i o n a l l e v e l . T h i s t h r e e t i e r e d p l a n shou ld be imple- mented a t bo th t h e AALL c h a p t e r l e v e l as wel l as t h e n a t i o n a l l e v e l t h rough c a t a l o g i n g i n s t i t c i t e s and conven t ion workshops. A g r e a t e r emphasis needs t o be p l aced on b a s i c C a t a l o g i n g e d u c a t i o n at t h e c i t y o r r e g i o n a l l e v e l t o accomodate t h e law f i r m and c o u r t l j b r a r i a n s who g e n e r a l l y o n l y a t t e n d t h e annua l c o n f e r e n c e when i t happens t o come t o t h e i r area.
