Theatre Under the Stars since 1966Your enthusiastic support during ASGT’s 50th anniversary season (2016) was awe-inspiring. We really went for it, and you — our community — showed up to celebrate with us in brilliant fashion. Thank you.
Energized by the celebration, now we’re looking ahead — toward a future that includes more brave, bold choices and embraces new and diverse points of view.
For the 2017 season, we’ve chosen a trio of musicals that celebrate community. These heartwarming stories remind us that when times are tough, our neighbors, friends, and family can save us (Sister Act), help us get our mojo back (The Full Monty), and empower us to achieve our dreams (In The Heights).
It’s going to be a fun summer of outdoor theatre under the stars at ASGT.
Please join us!
ASGT gratefully acknowledges the support of the City of Annapolis, the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, Anne Arundel County, and the Maryland State Arts Council:
sister actBook by Bill & Cheri Steinkellner Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by Glenn SlaterDirected by Clare ShafferMusical Direction by Paige RammelkampChoreography by Rikki Howie Lacewell
When showgirl Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she’s put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and the uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but, in doing so, blows her cover. Soon the gang is giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.
A feel-good musical comedy smash based on the hit 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act is a sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship. Filled with rousing gospel-style music, outrageous dancing, and a truly moving story, the show will give you good reason to REJOICE!
Rated PG. Parental discretion is always advised. Parents/guardians should determine beforehand whether the subject matter is appropriate.

“ Sister Act is a wonderfully over-the-top show—bursting with energy, strong characters, and sharp dialogue. I look forward to working with our cast to develop strong relationships, mine the comedy in the script, and discover what happens when cloister and club aesthetics come together.”

“ A rags-to-riches story (minus the riches), The Full Monty is a show with heart. A rough and tumble band of misfits lay it bare and find their purpose in the most unlikely of places: theatre! I’m excited to dive into this world of comedy, community, and comradery with our cast and crew.”

Six unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, NY are low on both cash and prospects. While spying on their wives at a “girls’ night out,” the men realize just how much the women enjoy watching male strippers. Jealous and out-of-work, the group of lovable misfits devises a daring and titillating way to make some quick cash and get back on their feet. In preparing, they find themselves exposed—physically and emotionally — and must learn to conquer their fears and self-consciousness, overcome prejudices, and find strength in each other.
Based on the hit 1997 film of the same name, The Full Monty is a heartwarming, upbeat comedy that entertains and grabs your heart. Filled with honest affection and razor-sharp humor, the show also features what may be the most highly-anticipated closing number ever!
Rated R. Parental discretion is always advised. Parents/guardians should determine beforehand whether the subject matter is appropriate.

in the heightsMusic & Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda Book by Quiara Alegria Hudes Conceived by Lin-Manuel MirandaDirected by Darnell Patrick MorrisMusical Direction by Chris PinderChoreography by Eben K. Logan
In New York’s largely Dominican-American neighbor-hood of Washington Heights, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three gen-erations of music. It’s a vibrant community on the brink of change — full of hopes, pressures, and dreams. When Usnavi, owner of the corner bodega, discovers that he sold a winning lottery ticket worth $96,000, everyone on the block spends three summer days fantasizing about how they would spend the small fortune and finally achieve their dreams.
From Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway sensation Hamilton, comes a heartfelt musical that tells the universal story of the American Dream set to a Latin beat. A jubilant celebration of urban life, the show’s tuneful score is enlivened by the stirring rhythms of salsa, Latin pop, and rap, and its zesty choreography is like none you’ve seen on our stage before.
Rated PG. Parental discretion is always advised. Parents/guardians should determine beforehand whether the subject matter is appropriate.

“ In The Heights is a show about family, love, and connection. Through his lyrics and score, Lin-Manuel Miranda creates a story that transcends race, age, and economic status to focus on the human condition. The show’s universally relatable themes make the story relevant and enjoyable for everyone.”
Darnell Patrick Morris, Director

Stand tall and shine bright.Launched in our 40th anniversary year (2006), Stage/2 is an ongoing, multi-phase project to restore, renovate, and rejuvenate ASGT’s historic property. Essential upgrades to the building’s exterior, interior spaces, stage, and seating area will strengthen our historic structure while providing a more comfortable, modernized experience for our growing community of patrons, artists, and volunteers.
This transformative project also addresses long-standing limitations of our historic building. Updates will allow ASGT to extend our downtown presence year-round; enhance the artistic experiences of our patrons, performers, and volunteers; expand our artistic and educational programs; and optimize our efficiency.
What’s next?n Upgrade the building to three-phase commercial
power (an essential project!)
n Replace the gravel with a comfortable walking surface
n Make much-needed improvements to the lobby and restrooms
n Improve the dressing rooms for the comfort of our volunteer performers
n Develop a capital campaign to raise funds for future upgrades
You can make a difference! Visit summergarden.com or e-mail [email protected] to learn how. Together, we will continue to make Annapolis and Anne Arundel County a great place to live, work, and play for years to come.
