Netball Queensland is an incorporated not-for-profit Association. Subject to the Association Incorporations Act (QLD) 1981, Netball Queensland operates under a Constitution which was last amended in July 2010 and is currently under review. Netball Queensland is currently comprised of 84 Affiliated Associations. Associations have been allocated into 12 regions in Queensland.

An elected board consisting of seven members who serve for two year terms govern the sport of Netball in Queensland. The Board is responsible for providing strategic direction and managing the administration of the affairs of the Association through the CEO who has been employed by the Board and is responsible to the Board for the day to day management and conduct of business. In line with the Constitution and relevant policies the Board may utilise various sub committees and panels to provide input to assist in fulfilling its role.

Jan Maggacis – President Jan has a background in HR and Personnel with other work experience in insurance, claims, underwriting and customer service. Other experiences include level three coach, former state and national selector,a Netball Queensland life member, with over 10 years involvement at Executive or Board level, former President Metropolitan Districts Netball Association, delegate to Netball Australia Council 2006, former delegate to AANA Council meetings and company director.

Kevin Brennan - Vice President Kevin was first appointed to the Board of Netball Queensland in 2004. He is a CEO of a construction company and director of companies based in Australia. Sport has always been a passion and he plays touch football, golf and enjoys trekking on trails around the world. All his daughters played Netball from five-years-old and he has been involved in the sport from a supporting parent to team management.

Richard van der Velde – Finance Officer Richard is the Company Director of CTR Rentals and was the founding President of the Northern Gold Coast Netball Association in 2009. He served as President until 2010 and is the current Vice President of the Golden South Region. Richard received the President’s Award for Volunteer Contribution in 2009.

Susan Bamford – Board Member Susan was a Netball Queensland Board Member in 1996 and from 1999 to 2011 and is a Netball Queensland life member. Other credits include: endorsed National ‘A’ Badge Umpire, UDC Chairperson, former Umpiring Institute Member, accredited timer and scorer, accredited AANA tester and course presenter, life member and former President for Brendan’s Netball Club, former Western Districts Netball Association Secretary, former Regional Coaching Coordinator, Level 1 Coach, admin officer Queensland Government, Chair of the Umpire Advisory Panel along with having a background in administration and workplace health and safety.

Lyn Law – Board Member Lyn has been a board member since March 2008 and has been on Mackay Netball’s executive since 1998 and President since 2006.

Lyn was on the Whitsunday Branch Regional Committee and held the office of Vice President and President (1998-2006). Along with being an accredited scorer and timer, Lyn has a background in administration and is currently an administration supervisor for a provider of transport and integrated logistics solutions.

Ron Visser – Board MemberRon has an extensive background in Netball with coaching and administration roles.

Some of his highlights include Association representative coach, President and Vice President, Brisbane South Regional President for two years, Tier 1 and 2 coach selection panel and player selector. Ron has been an Australia Day Award recipient and won the Netball Queensland President’s Award for Outstanding Contribution in 2006.

Barb Ahmat – Board Member Barb has significant experience in Netball with coaching and administrative roles and has been a Board Member since 2010. She has been the President of Rockhampton Netball Association on two separate occasions, from 1996 to 1998 and from 2007 to current. She is also the coach of the Capricorn Claws Queensland State Netball League team and who became the first regional team to make the Queensland State Netball League finals in 2010.

President’s ReportThere can be no doubt at the start of the 2011 we were uncertain of what was in store for our sport or for our great State. The year that unfolded has heralded an amazing journey...

Following a summer of sorrows with devastating flood and cyclone damage it was inspirational to see our netball communities bounce back resiliently in the face of adversity. In particular Townsville, Western Districts and Bundaberg who suffered the most significant damages saw their roads to recovery ably assisted by Member Support Unit, donations to the Netball Queensland Flood Relief Fund initially established by the Board and generously supported by fellow members as well as the support from the Queensland Government.

Thanks to the organising committees at Western Districts, Townsville and Metropolitan Districts Netball Associations who hosted our State Events and enabled opportunities to showcase our sport. Our state teams are to be congratulated on their performance at Nationals which provided a valuable opportunity to develop and excel. To those volunteers across the state who received volunteer recognition awards from their local councils or state representatives - congratulations on a job well done over many years.

Congratulations to Annette Smith and Janelle Derrington who were very worthy recipients of Life Membership QNA for their tireless efforts as State Representatives, AA badged Umpires and in their continuing efforts advancing umpire development.

The Board appointed two panels - Umpiring Advisory Panel and Coach Athlete Advisory Panel to assist with the alignment of strategies into operation priorities and to ensure quality control and outcome focus is achieved for programs and events. This is an initiative used well in other states and confirmed as a good governance tool during discussions with the consultant used by State Government during the sports funding audit that was conducted on our sport earlier this year. The results of the audit were pleasing and commendable and the auditor put forward some suggestions to consider for improvement including some recommendation for constitution reform.

A valued investment into a more whole of state approach saw the roll out of a strategically revamped Holden Cruze Cup Competition and Queensland State Netball League with improvements in pathways, inclusion and regional linking. These elite competitions created great media attention at a local and regional level and it has been an important catalyst for renewed interest and membership growth. This increased coverage domestically and through

the ANZ Championship has contributed to almost an 8% growth of members.

The success of our Mission Queensland Firebirds – undefeated ANZ Champions is a memorable moment in our sport’s history. The publicity surrounding this history making event has been well supported and documented and it would be difficult to find any member who has not felt proud to be a part of the overall journey and success of the Queensland Firebirds, netball and women’s sport. The support from major partner Mission Foods is greatly appreciated and has provided wonderful opportunities to showcase our Firebirds on the international stage.

Presentations to the Firebirds team and players are to applauded which included the Keys to the City by the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Queensland Government Sports Award by the Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, Women Sport Queensland Awards for team of the year – Firebirds and People’s Choice to Natalie Medhurst, Netball Australia awards Liz Ellis Diamond and ANZ Championship Player of the Year to Laura Geitz, Coach of the Year presented by Australian Sports Commission to Roselee Jencke, Joint ANZ Championship MVP awarded to Natalie Medhurst and Romelda Aiken was named Player of the Match for the 2011 ANZ Championship Grand Final.

Congratulations to the Australian Netball Diamonds, which included three Firebirds, as they retained the World Champions status winning a thrilling final against the Silver Ferns.

Sadly, we lost a wonderful ambassador – netball matriarch Phyl Grant who passed away in September. Phyl was Netball Queensland’s first AA badged umpire, a determined, dedicated and valued volunteer with over

40 years service who was passionate about helping young players build a brighter future for themselves and their communities with involvement in netball. In recognition of Phyl’s outstanding contribution to netball a Memorial Bursary Fund has been established aimed at junior netball development initiatives. This Bursary will see Phyl’s dedication to our sport and community forever etched in the Netball Queensland tapestry.

Discussions with State Government with regards to a potential facility opportunity for Netball Queensland and home for Mission Queensland Firebirds have progressed well and I acknowledge with sincere thanks the work and attention to detail that Vice President - Kevin Brennan has provided to this project.

Thanks to Firebirds Captain, Lauren Nourse who championed the idea of establishing a former Firebirds group. The concept was progressed further to recognise the importance of valuing the contribution of players and officials from the most elite level of Queensland and Australian representation over many years that resulted in the establishment of the NQ Alumni.

The main philosophy behind establishing the Alumni is to provide networking opportunities by reconnecting friendships from the past and providing the platform for past elite players and officials to be involved and engaged in the future of netball and the Firebirds. This is now considered an important inclusion strategy and is now reflected in other states.

I salute retiring ANZ Championship winning Mission Queensland Firebird, Clare McMeniman on her stellar career spanning many years of dedication to Netball, from Queensland Under 17, 19 and 21 State Teams through the years to the AIS and the Australian Under 21 team, Mission Queensland Firebirds and Australian Diamonds Squad. A tight, tenacious defender and a dedicated athlete with a high work ethic Clare inspired us as we watched her play with passion and commitment. Feared by her opponents and admired by her team mates, Clare has been a wonderful ambassador and role model, we wish her well in her professional career and we look forward to her continued involvement in netball through the Alumni.

The Board in finalising its strategic priorities for 2012 wanted to ensure there is a clear understanding of the commercial and practical capacity of any potential program or event, with associated costs and most importantly the benefit to our members. To assist with the strategic alignment, it is essential that operational functions and priorities are outcome focussed with quality control to ensure optimum results are achieved.

A review of Regional Development areas was undertaken to ensure there is an integrated approach for sustainability, inclusion and the development of players, coaches and

umpires across the State. The Board is confident that investing funds in the developing area of our sport will ensure solid foundation for future growth and succession in providing the pivotal link from grass roots to the elite.

Equally important is the opportunity that has been provided for Interaction and feedback with associations and regions across the state at NQ meetings, the Sports Forum, regional Forums and teleconferences and we will continue to canvass these worthwhile opportunities with our members.

I express my sincere thanks to the Board, CEO Cameron O’Hara and staff for their work and dedication in advancing netball. The support and funding provided by the Queensland Government is greatly appreciated and assists with delivery of netball through the community.

I recognise the strong relationship that we have developed with Netball Australia and other Member Organisations to ensure the ongoing strength of our sport.

Our sport is indebted to our volunteers who contribute so enthusiastically and are passionate about the success of our sport at many levels and provide netball communities outstanding support that ensures the future of our sport.

Netball is a dynamic sporting organisation where young women and members can belong, enjoy, develop and excel – that is our business and our focus and with your valued support the journey ahead suggests continued optimism and success.

Chief Executive Officer’s ReportDelivering in rapidly changing environments.OVERViEw2011 was certainly a defining year for Netball in Queensland across the board, a year which commenced with state wide devastation and finished being one of the most rewarding and successful years for the sport in recent times. So how did netball perform under the challenge of this rapidly changing environment?

Despite uncertainty the Netball collective has beaten the ‘elements’ and delivered in 2011:

• Participation numbers showed growth from 2010, exceeding 45,000 in 2011

• The Mission Queensland Firebirds completed an undefeated ANZ Championship season to be crowned Premiers in 2011. Furthermore, they were awarded the keys to the city by the Brisbane City Council and appeared on three front covers of the Courier Mail newspaper.

• Our State wide lobbying effort surrounding facility development for Netball showed positive results through funding received and works completed

• Key organisational financials exceeded our expectations, cash flow remained positive enabling sound returns for Netball

• Organisational refinement, enhancement to greater service members and promote Netball across Queensland.

In addition, the organisation has forged ahead in delivering on the five strategic pillars of; Involving People in Netball, Capacity of our people, Growing our brand, Build our business, Facility development and planning.

Of course, the delivery of our strategies and in turn our operating structure requires support and we are fortunate that our 84 Member Associations, corporate partners, State and Local government well and truly share the vision of Netball Queensland by way of their ongoing engagement.

I acknowledge the continued support and funding of the State Government, specifically the Department of Communities – Sport and Recreation, The Queensland Academy of Sport and Queensland Health. I would also like to sincerely thank our major support partners in Mission Foods and Ergon Energy for their continued support of our development and High Performance sports structures.

DRiViNg gROwTh AcROSS NETBALLOur strategic vision, forged partnerships and continual engagement with members and stakeholders has enabled the organisation to drive growth across many of its operating priorities including, Association support and

development, Netball competitions and development pathways, commercial and communications, high performance, governance and corporate services.

The provision of greater Association support and development through the continued engagement of the Membership Support Unit has proved a significant step towards ensuring a growing sport is well supported and developed at the Association and volunteer administration level. Work performed in enhancing Netball’s collective presence in areas such as technology, facility development, governance, marketing and communications and finance have all been well received and supported via the membership, local and state government. Furthermore, the enhancement of these services and the unit through the department of Communities, Sport and Recreation, Local Jobs Plan funding 2012-2014 will provide greater assistance and tangible results for Member Associations within funded clusters come 2012.

The enhancement of Netball Queensland’s competitions and development pathways formed a key strategic priority for 2011. Mechanisms to ensure competitive balance, regular training and playing environments, inclusion of Mission Queensland Firebirds, Regional ownership and commercialisation were trialed and implemented under Netball’s competition structures in 2011. This delivered pleasing results and established a solid platform for 2012 and the future delivery of exceptional development pathways for athletes, coaches and umpires state wide. Keeping in alignment with the desire to improve our existing structures, Netball Queensland commenced its review of Regional Development pathways and programs with results forthcoming in early 2012.

The organisation has continued to enhance its commercial opportunities and communication framework with significant effort placed on stakeholder relations, partnership development, leveraging netball’s brand and digital media for the state and membership alike. Having taken a modernised communications approach to the way in which messages are delivered to our members, past and present, Netball Queensland has not only bolstered its youth following but greater enabled long standing volunteers to access vital information in a timely manner.

The modernisation of Netball’s communication framework through Facebook, Twitter, Netmail and further extension of the state’s NMAS member database has enabled the organisation to capitalise both commercially and through brand entrenchment. We were pleased to welcome new partners Telstra, The Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation, Gilbert and Logan City Council in 2011 and thank them for their valuable support.

The delivery of exemplary High Performance programs in 2011 was well supported though our on court success in 2011. A significant organisational milestone in winning the ANZ Championship was realised through the undefeated premiership win of the Mission Queensland Firebirds in 2011, further validating Netball Queensland’s continued enhancement and investment in high performance netball programs. The continued services of Coach Rose Jencke, Assistant Coach Tracey Robinson, High Performance Manager Brian Hopley and their established network of support coaches and support staff requires significant recognition and we are thankful for their dedicated approach to the delivery of High Performance programs in 2011 and the setting of future performance and program benchmarks.

It is not without sound governance and corporate services that Netball Queensland can achieve and sustain such growth in rapidly changing environments. Retained earnings over consecutive years has allowed the organisation to invest and return on behalf of the members on a larger scale in 2011. Under the guidance of the Board, Finance Committee, CEO and financial controller, Netball Queensland finances and operating risks remain healthy and transparent for the membership. The provision and implementation of a Disaster relief fund following Queensland’s natural disasters, added development expenses and greater Association support are bi products of Netball Queensland’s sound corporate governance and financial management. Rounding out some key operational highlights for 2011:

- 132 attendees recorded at Netball Queensland’s Inaugural Sports Forum held at Logan Metro Sports 2011

- Technology framework, NMAS and Netmail uptake increased 50% in 2011

- Participation numbers for NetSetGO!, netball’s own introductory netball program, up 53.7% from 2010 – a total of 3421 participants

- The successful licensing of the Netball Queensland brand and transition to appointing Game Clothing as the official licensee and manufacturer of Netball Queensland clothing

- Representative success: Australian Netball Diamond representation, AIS scholarships awards, national

underage team selections, positive state team results (refer achievements section of report)

- Implementation of Netball Queensland’s elite development squad, further bolstering Netball Queensland athlete pathways

- Enhanced face to face support of Member Associations by way of flood recovery, technology education, council liaison, sponsorship procurement, carnival delivery

MOViNg FORwARDThrough the governance of the Board, Netball Queensland has established a solid foundation for the sport moving forward. The continued expansion of development pathways, the modernisation of the Netball Queensland brand through technology mediums, greater support and resourcing of Member Associations through member capacity building programs, government lobbying, and sound financial management strategies will only deliver positive outcomes in 2012 and beyond. It is truly an exciting time for the sport and a ‘space to watch’.

I take this opportunity to acknowledge the continued support of the President Jan Maggacis and the Netball Queensland Board, the Management team and the operational staff and volunteers at Netball Queensland and the many people in the wider community, who have all continued above and beyond to enhance, support and develop the sport of Netball in Queensland – thankyou.

The admiral reputation of Netball in Queensland, particularly in times of rapidly changing environments, is testament to this great sport, its holistic passion and commitment. Thank you for another fantastic year of Netball.

Finance Officer’s ReportFor the 2011 financial year, Netball Queensland posted a profit surplus of $268,699 (2010: $104,890), which included non-cash depreciation of $81,172. The balance sheet is strong and all financial ratios are healthy. Working capital is $708,856 supported by a current ratio of 1.75. This measure of short-term liquidity clearly indicates our ability to meet our short-term debts from our current assets. Our strong cash reserve allows Netball Queensland the opportunity to fund more projects in line with our strategic priorities.

The start of the year included a flood that devastated much of our state. There was concern from a finance perspective on how these floods would affect the organisation. The obvious was capitations, which remain our largest income contributor and represents 42% of income for the year. Other concerns arose from damages to facilities, resources and equipment as a result of the flood. Immediately a flood relief fund was set up and processes were put in place for associations to apply for various forms of assistance. I’m pleased to report that Netball Queensland and its associations persevered over this event and we came out of it a stronger organisation.

This year was the first of the three year appointment of the new insurance providers, Willis Insurance. Our previous brokers, JLT Insurance was commissioned for three years

from 2008. The decision for Netball Queensland to move to a new insurer was based on financial reasons as well as the added benefit of being in the collective group with our other netball counterparts as part of the Netball Australia Risk Protection Program.

Throughout the year, Netball Queensland has been able to improve services while managing the demands that come with being a fast growing state sport. Netball Queensland is delivering better value for money for its members as it continues to deliver its core services throughout the state. Netball Queensland continues to work with their members to increase coverage across most of the state and to protect and ensure the long-term survival of our diverse spread of associations across the state.

As we move forward, specific key areas of focus will be to continue to understand and meet our members’ needs, keep costs low and deliver quality services. In pursuit of these goals, the Finance Committee remains committed to leading Netball Queensland to be financially responsible and prudent.

Netball Queensland should be proud of its achievements in the last 12 months. This success however would not be possible without the combined effort of all our people. The Finance Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board, Netball Queensland staff and the numerous volunteers for their outstanding performance during the year. Your continual display of commitment to the sport of netball is greatly appreciated.

Netball Queensland’s membership has continued its growth on previous years to post a total membership of 45,331 for 2011. This represents a 7.5% increase on 2010’s total membership.

Life Members

During 2011, Netball Queensland Life Member, Phyl Grant passed away.

Phyl was a matriarch of Netball - a determined, dedicated and valued volunteer who was passionate about helping young players build a brighter future for themselves and their communities with involvement in Netball.

To honour Phyl’s memory, a Memorial Bursary Fund has been established. The bursary will be aimed at Junior Netball Development initiatives and will vary in terms of eligibility criteria and may consider playing ability, achievements, socio-economic background and rural or regional location.

Phyl was a champion of inclusion and strongly committed to providing the opportunity for young players from all walks of life to engage in Netball.

The establishment of the Phyl Grant Memorial Bursary will ensure that the fabric created through Phyl’s life-long dedication to our sport and work in the community will remain forever etched in the Netball Queensland tapestry.

FLOOD ASSiSTANcEAlthough 2011 provided many achievements for the Membership Support Unit (MSU), the beginning of the year brought with it several natural disasters that affected many of our Associations throughout Queensland. While the MSU provided during this time significant support and guidance to Associations, the hard work, commitment and time donated by volunteers enabled Netball in Queensland to ‘stand tall’ in a time of adversity.

Netball Queensland set up a flood relief fund that Associations and individuals throughout Queensland generously donated to help our Associations get back up and running.

SPORTS FORUMIn July, Netball Queensland presented the inaugural Sports Forum event that provided an educational style conference weekend for Netball Queensland’s administrators, coaches and umpires. The first of its kind, the event attracted over 130 attendees from July 9-10 at Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre. It enabled our highly valued volunteers; the people who drive the sport of Netball week in week out, the chance to add to their skill set. Feedback from the forum has been extremely positive and will be used to further enhance the appeal of the event to Netball Queensland members in years to come.

TEchNOLOgY - NMAS + NET MAiLIn 2011, Netball Queensland can report that there was a significant increase in the number of Associations utilising more components of the system than in 2010. Through an increased level of training from the MSU more Associations are utilising more modules of NMAS enabling volunteers’ tasks to be streamlined. The MSU will continue to increase training from early 2012 for Associations that wish to start utilising NMAS and for those wanting to expand their knowledge base of the NMAS system.

QUALiTY MEMBER PROgRAMSignificant work has continued with Netball Queensland’s Quality Member Program (QMP). The Affiliation Level was released to Member Associations in late 2011 as a lead in to the full release of the program scheduled for early 2012. The QMP has been designed to help guide Associations to an improved level of operating and administrational standards. By adopting the program Association’s will contribute to the overall continued growth and development of Netball. Associations will also be rewarded for reaching certain levels of the Quality Member Program.

LOcAL JOBS PLAN APPLicATiONIn the latter part of the year Netball Queensland applied through the Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation Services to access funding for eight Local Jobs Plan Coordinators, with the vision to increase the service levels to our Member Associations.

Netball Queensland was successful with five of the eight applications. The successful applications will include the following Associations;

• Cluster 1: Bowen, Dysart, Middlemount, Moranbah, Sarina & District

• Cluster 2: Caboolture, Caloundra, Coolum, Maleny, Nambour, SEMMNA, Sunshine Coast, Kingaroy, Nanango

• Cluster 3: Hinterland, Northern Gold Coast, South Coast, Southport Carrara, Jimboomba, Beaudesert

• Cluster 4: Metropolitan Districts, Bayside & Districts, Albert & District, Logan City, Shailer Park, South Brisbane Strikers, Underwood Park

• Cluster 5: Brisbane, Downey Park, QLD Catholic, Pine Rivers, Goodna, Western Districts, Ipswich

Responsibilities of the positions will include but are not limited to the following;

• To build the overall capacity of the Association

• To provide advice and support on key governance and management issues within their Associations

• Create partnerships and opportunities for councils, other Associations, other sporting clubs, community groups and schools to work together to encourage greater participation and volunteering

• Support Associations with grant opportunities, sponsorship, fundraising and corporate partnerships

• Advise on marketing and promotional activities

cOUNciL/gOVERNMENT SUPPORTThe MSU has focused on increasing key relationships for Netball and increasing government liaison. It must be noted in light of the natural disasters earlier in the year, a significant amount of support was given by local councils and the government to ensure Netball continued at the affected Associations during 2012. Seven Associations and one club were the direct beneficiaries of the most recent Infrastructure Program from the Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation services. Netball received over $1.1 million to upgrade facilities and infrastructure. With such a significant growth rate in the sport the upgrading of facilities is crucial in ensuring Netball in Queensland can continue to thrive.

Therefore, Netball Queensland must again thank local councils and the government for the ongoing support to Netball Queensland and its Member Associations.

hOLDEN cRUZE cUPThe 2011 Grand Final saw the Kedron-Wavell Services Club Cougars from Brisbane North secure the Premiership defeating the Carina Leagues Club Tigers from Brisbane East.

QUEENSLAND STATE NETBALL LEAgUEThe year saw a new beginning for the Queensland State Netball League with teams from all 12 Netball Queensland Regions competing in a revised competition format. A true state-wide competition was staged with matches scheduled on a regular basis for teams in Regional Queensland, and in the process eliminating the need for three cluster weekends. All Regions outside of Brisbane hosted matches in 2011, with matches in Brisbane being held at State Netball Centre and Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre.

The competition culminated with a four week finals series involving the top six teams at the conclusion of fixture rounds. The Kedron-Wavell Services Club Cougars from Brisbane North and Logan Wildcats representing the Brisbane South Region contested a hard fought Grand Final with the Kedron-Wavell Services Club Cougars successfully defending their premiership in this competition.

STATE EVENTSAll three hosting Associations were affected by the natural disasters in 2011. However, due to the hard work and dedication of the hosting Associations and their volunteers each event was run successfully.

Challenge Carnival saw 97 teams compete at Townsville City Netball Association on April 30 to May 2. Metropolitan Districts Netball Association hosted the 2011 State Age Championships on June 11 to June 13, with 161 teams competing. Country Carnival was hosted by Western Districts Netball Association, which was the biggest Country Carnival in seven years, with 159 teams competing.

VicKi wiLSON cUPThe 2011 Vicki Wilson Cup had 178 high school teams compete from around Queensland. Eleven school sport regions held preliminary rounds throughout term 2 and term 3 of the school year to determine the best teams from across the state. The final 16 teams remaining, then continued on to the Finals Series held at the State Netball Centre on October 8-9. The weekend saw some great Netball, with the two top teams from 2010 playing off again in the 2011 Grand Final. John Paul College defeated St Peter’s Lutheran College 35 - 29. Vicki Wilson was present at the Closing Ceremony to present the teams with their trophies.

A well deserved thank you must go to the Regional Coordinators and volunteers involved in this year’s competition.

MiSSiON PRiMARY SchOOLS cUPIn 2011, 82 teams from 64 Queensland primary schools gathered at MacGregor Netball Association on October 22 to 23 for the Mission Primary Schools Cup. This was the third year this event was run in the current format, and nominations have increased by 48% since its inception. Mission Queensland Firebird Romelda Aiken was present at the Opening Ceremony, and happily signed autographs and had photographs taken with the young players.

Teams were divided into eight pools, and played in a round robin competition. The top two teams from each pool continued on to the knock out finals round. Matthew Flinders were crowned the Mission Primary Schools Cup Champions for 2011, after defeating All Saints Anglican School in the Grand Final 27-7.

Netball Queensland appreciates the effort and support of MacGregor Netball Association and their volunteers in making this event a success.

The Sport Development Unit (SDU) enriches the netball community from exposure to the sport right up to long term engagement. The SDU oversees the all areas of participation and development from San Remo NetSetGO! to Accreditation of the volunteers.

cOMMUNiTY PROgRAMS: NETBALL FOR ALL

In 2011 Netball Queensland obtained funding through Netball Australia to deliver a project for deaf athletes to participate in Netball. This project had many deliverables for inclusion, one being education and training. Deaf Netball Queensland became members of a Netball Queensland Affiliate (MacGregor Association), as part of this. A team competed in the Associations night fixtures; from there teams were selected to compete in the Deaf Netballl Nationals in January 2012 in Victoria.

Netball Queensland also supported Queensland Health community engagement project to promote sport to the culturally and/or linguistically diverse.

In 2011, the SDU focus was to provide opportunities for members, specifically surrounding increasing capacity of our Member Organisations to ensure members have the opportunity to attend Regional based education and training.

cOAchiNgNetball Queensland continues to provide quality development for coaches around the state. One of these initiatives was the implementation of apprentice coaches for State Teams. This has led to some significant achievements of linking Regional based competition teams Holden Cruze Cup (HCC) and Queensland State Netball League (QSNL) with the Regional Academy.

Some Regions have also established a network of coaches that are linked to the Regional Academy and at a local Association level.

A significant coach pathway is through the HCC and QSNL teams as an assistant and/or apprentice coaches to their Regional based team, some of which were allocated in 2011.

Again in 2011 the Netball Queensland Regional Academy offered coach education as part of the camp structure specifically targeting Association coaches.

All coaches were offered the opportunity to attend the inaugural Sports Forum, with 75 coaches participating in the Coaching Education Stream in 2011. High level identified coaches were also offered the opportunity to partake in Coaching Development Sessions with the 2011 AIS Head Coach Sue Gaudion and Assistant Coach Kylee Sampson during the 17/U and 19/U National Netball Championships.

This was a great year for grassroots Coaching Accreditation courses, with almost twice as many Foundation Coaching Courses being delivered compared to 2010.

BENch OFFiciALS The current Technical Official Accreditation Framework was delivered by Netball Australia in 2010. Netball Queensland is aiming to build on the current pool of Accredited Technical Officials in line with the increased professional nature of Netball as a sport. Two State Scorer and Timer Courses were run in 2011 and were held at Moorooka, Brisbane and Rockhampton, Capricorn Region.

National Membership Administration System (NMAS) continues to be a key function of the SDU data recording and tracking the accreditation process and obtaining reports on Coaches, Umpires and Bench Officials.

UMPiRiNgEducation and training opportunities were delivered by Netball Queensland in 2011 at all three State Events. In April, a National Stakeholders meeting was held with Anne-Marie Phippard, Chris Burton from Netball Australia and 29 Member Organisations in attendance including eight Regional Umpire Coordinators from the following Regions: Brisbane North, Golden South, Darling Downs, Wide Bay, Capricorn, Marlin Coast, Magnetic North and Whitsunday.• Challenge Carnival – Townsville Netball Association

NETBALL QUEENSLAND TARgET 10 & 15 PROgRAM Target 10 is a squad of up to ten developing badged umpires selected from Regional and/or State Events by Netball Queensland AA Umpires in consultation with the Netball Queensland Umpire Coordinator. TID Target 10 umpires who show potential to progress to a higher level.

In 2011 the Umpires selected were: • Yvette Mackay-Payne – Golden South • Elise Crawford – Capricorn Coast • Carly Ferguson – Magnetic North • Rachael Wootton – Brisbane West • Jess Robertson – Brisbane North • Lauren Dowdell – Capricorn CoastThese umpires were all allocated an umpire coach within their Region for week to week coaching, appointed a mentor out of their Region with whom they corresponded during the year and worked at one of Netball Queensland’s State Events during 2011.

Netball Queensland Target 15 is a squad of up to 15 talent identified umpires who are on the State Umpiring Development Pathway as badged umpires and show potential to progress to a higher level. Umpires were selected from Regional and/or State Events by Netball Queensland Sports Development Unit.

National Schoolgirls Netball championships – PerthAshleigh Stevenson from Metropolitan Districts Netball Association was invited by Netball Australia to attend the National Schoolgirls Netball Championships as an umpire.Ashleigh was allocated the Grand Final which was a significant achievement. Ashleigh has already been identified for the National MO Umpire Development Program for 2012.

Australian Netball League (ANL)On August 13 to 14 Di Cocker and Yvette Mackay-Payne were allocated ANL games in Brisbane. Both umpires were coached by G & E members, Janelle Derrington and Stacey Compton who were in attendance.

NETBALL QUEENSLAND REgiONAL AcADEMY (RA)In 2011, the 12 Netball Queensland Regional Academies again provided a structure for the decentralised development of Athletes, Coaches and Umpires. The Academy Program forms an integral component of the Underage State Selections pathway and enables the equitable delivery of professional development across the State of Queensland.

Ergon Energy supported the Netball Queensland Regional Academy Program for the fourth year and made multiple appearances at Academy events to show their support. The Academy Program also maintained effective links with universities and other sporting organisations for the utilisation of qualified personnel and facilities.

The 2011 three day Screening and Development Camp held in September formed the culmination of the Regional Academy Program and proved a highlight for both athletes and personnel with 25 Regional Academy Athletes being selected to Phase 2 Screening.

Despite the challenges faced in early 2011, the Netball Queensland Regional Branches have continued their development of the Regions through the streams of State Competitions, the Netball Queensland Regional Academy Program and Accreditation Courses.

Netball Queensland continued to expand links with the Regions in 2011 with the implementation of the Regional Teleconference Program, utilising technology to enhance contact with our members around Queensland. Further regional involvement was sought through Regional Reviews held in August and September with a Regional Delegate providing face-to-face feedback. Members of the Sport Development Unit also completed the Annual Regional Tour, attending Regional Planning and/or Annual General Meetings discussing the outcomes and challenges encountered and direction for 2012.

gOVERNANcE AND REgiONAL REcOgNiTiON In 2011, Netball Queensland expanded its recognition of volunteer’s contributions with the implementation of ‘Putting the Spotlight on Volunteers’ program. This provided the opportunity for volunteers to have their contributions being publicised on the Netball Queensland website and other print media. This new initiative has expanded the Mission

Queensland Firebirds Corporate Box Program which saw 42 Netball volunteers from around Queensland attending Mission Queensland Firebirds home games in recognition of their substantial contributions.

SAN REMO NETSETgO!In 2011 the San Remo NetSetGO! participant numbers for Queensland was 3,421, which was a 53% increase from 2010. There was a total of 71 Accredited San Remo NetSetGO! Centres operating accross the state, with 50 of them being Netball Queensland Affiliated Associations. Netball Queensland also oversaw the inclusion NetSetGO! program focusing on indigenous groups and groups with a disability. In 2011, there were 22 inclusion centres with 1,316 participants.

Several promotional events were undertaken to continue in raising awareness for the ever-growing junior Netball program. San Remo NetSetGO! had a display at the Brisbane Rhymes Festival, was half time entertainment for three Mission Queensland Firebirds home games and the Activity Centre was utilised at several different events and locations to increase brand awareness.

This year Mission Queensland Firebird star shooter Romelda Aiken also took time in the Netball off season to promote the San Remo NetSetGO! program. Romelda visited four San Remo NetSetGO! Schools, displayed at the Brisbane Health and Fitness Expo, the 96.5FM Community Day, Montrose Access Community Day and the Nambour Primary Schools Gala Day.

MiSSiON QUEENSLAND FiREBiRDS NETBALL cAMPFollowing the success of the Mission Queensland Firebirds in 2011, the annual Mission Queensland Firebirds Camp was increased by 40 to cater for a total of 120 participants. The camp was structured into two sections with 60 juniors aged 12 and 13 years and 60 seniors aged 14 and 15 years. Mission Queensland Firebirds Romelda Aiken, Keirra Trompf, Laura Geitz, Natalie Medhurst, Lauren Nourse, Elissa Macleod, Ameliaranne Wells and Candice Adams attended to take particpants through activities. Firebirds Coaches Roselee Jencke and Tracey Robinson were also on hand to run a session.

LAURA gEiTZ NETBALL cLiNicSIn 2011, Laura Geitz ran 20 netball clinics with 1,400 participants aged eight to 16 years. Laura ran clinics in the following regions Suncoast, Darling Downs, Golden South, Capricorn, Wide Bay and Brisbane regions. This was the first year where Laura ran a Laura Geitz Road Trip where she took her clinics on the road for a week in regional areas to help in promoting Netball Queensland pathways.

MiSSiON QUEENSLAND FiREBiRDS FLOOD FUNDRAiSER cLiNicSAfter the devastation to Queensland by the natural disasters, the Mission Queensland Firebirds chipped in to bring some cheer to the young children from affected areas. In January, Chelsea Pitman, Ameliaranne Wells and Elissa Macleod went to Bundaberg and delivered a Netball clinic for juniors at a local school, as the Bundaberg Netball Association courts were submerged in water several times. Then in February, Mission Queensland Firebirds Laura Geitz, Natalie Medhurst, Amy Steel and Candice Adams flew into Rockhampton for another clinic where all funds raised went to the Mission Queensland Firebirds Flood Fund. While in Rockhampton the Firebirds visited the local fire station to thank the fire fighters who were first on site to help clean the Rockhampton Netball Association courts.

The High Performance area of Netball Queensland has progressed under the guidance of Brian Hopley. Part of the 2011 success can be attributed to his drive and determination to increase the professional standards required at the elite level. Netball Queensland thanks Brian for his significant contribution.

In 2011, Mission Queensland Firebirds won the ANZ Championship, being undefeated throughout the season. This has become one of the great moments in Queensland’s rich sporting history.

With an enhanced commitment in 2011 to sports medicine, sports science and video analysis we will observe future improvements in the development of our elite athletes in the Queensland Fusion and National Championship teams (21/U, 19/U and 17/U).

The inception of the QAS Elite Development Squad has been a major focus for the High Performance department in 2011. The aim of the program is to progress the athletes to ANZ Championship level. The elite athletes in the squad will work closely with the Mission Queensland Firebirds coaching staff to assist with their Netball Development Pathway. Specialist sessions and the full High Performance support staff program will be delivered to each of these athletes.

Throughout 2011, the partnerships with the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) and University of Queensland (UQ) Sports High Performance Unit have significantly assisted the Netball Queensland High Performance program.

In 2011, the High Performance area of the sport re-aligned its partnership with the Queensland Academy of Sport becoming the main training venue for the Mission Queensland Firebirds, Queensland Fusion and the Elite Development Squad.

The High Performance Unit also realigned its partnership with the University of Queensland Sports High Performance Unit, which provides continued Sports Science Support

Services for all Netball Queensland Representative Teams. UQ Sport also provide coach education seminars which offer valuable information for coaches.

At the National Netball Championships, Queensland teams were provided with video analysis support. This enabled coaches to review and analyse matches and to provide group and individual feedback to the team and players during the tournament. Sportscode, a system used heavily by the Mission Queensland Firebirds, was utilised for this analysis.

In the area of strength and conditioning, the Visual Coaching software was utilised to provide online programs for players in the Australian Netball League (ANL) and representative teams, as well as to provide programs to the Phase 2 players leading up to final selection for the State Teams.

Australian Netball LeagueIn 2011, Netball Queensland saw the fourth season of the Australian Netball League (ANL) kick off in July with the Queensland Fusion travelling to Canberra for the first round matches. Led by Coach Jenny Brazel and Captain Jacinta Messer, the Queensland Fusion started their campaign in exceptional style by defeating South Australia and the Victorian Fury. The second round saw further victories for the Queensland Fusion in Tasmania. Queensland Fusion had convincing wins over the Canberra Darters and the Tassie Spirit. Round three was Queensland’s home round, held at Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre. With a large crowd the Queensland Fusion narrowly defeated the NSW Blues by one point, and convincingly overcame the Territory Storm. The Queensland Fusion were on top of the table at the completion of the fourth round, though after narrow losses in the fifth round they finished fourth after round play. They were still in contention for the finals, which were being held in Melbourne. Unfortunately the Queensland Fusion lost to NSW Waratahs in the Semi Final and the Western Sting in the bronze medal play off, giving them a respectable fourth place finish. The NSW Waratahs claimed the title after a convincing win over the Victorian Fury.

National Netball championshipsAfter three months of intense training and preparation the Queensland Under 17 years and Under 19 years teams prepared for a home National Netball Championships. The 2011 Under 17s and Under 19s National Netball Championships were hosted by Queensland at the Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre. There were 16 teams, 31 volunteers, and hundreds of spectators. Attendance was greater than expected, and there was exceptional Netball played. The National Championships operated smoothly and appraisal was received from Netball Australia and other state delegates, parents, players and officials.

Both teams competed remarkably well, with some exceptional matches of Netball witnessed throughout the week. Queensland Under 17s competed well and finished third overall. The Under 19s, defending champions, were not as pleased with their result, finishing 5th overall.

The Under 21s National Netball Championships were held in Melbourne. It was a closely contested competition all week, with Queensland putting in a great effort and finishing in the top four to make the finals. Unfortunately Queensland were defeated in the Semi Final and the bronze medal play-off to finish fourth overall.

In 2011 the Mission Queensland Firebirds achieved what no other team in the history of the ANZ Championship has done – completed a perfect season.

There were very few changes to the team with four new players including Chelsea Pitman (Canterbury Tactix), Elissa Macleod (Victoria), and Queenslanders Candice Adams and Ameliaranne Wells.

It was a memorable year as the team racked up win after win with crowds and fans growing week on week.

The Mission Queensland Firebirds hosted six home games, the ANZ Championship Major Semi Final and the ANZ Championship Grand Final

With the success on court came an increase in media coverage for the Mission Queensland Firebirds with a record of three front pages of The Courier Mail.

Average crowd numbers across the season were 2,505 with the Grand Final attracting a record-number crowd of 3,541 with extra seating being brought in for the event.

Season ticket sales were also up on 2010 numbers with a total of 740 Season Ticket holders compared to 692 members in 2010.

In response to Queensland’s summer of disasters the Mission Queensland Firebirds were a key point in Netball Queensland’s Standing Tall Campaign. They also made visits to several areas affected by flooding including Rockhampton and Bundaberg. Throughout 2011 they made visits to a number of Netball Associations, Clubs and Schools.

A record number of six Mission Queensland Firebirds took part in Australian Netball Diamonds Selections; Laura Geitz, Natalie Medhurst, Chelsea Pitman, Amy Steel, Elissa Macleod and Clare McMeniman who all attended Australian Diamonds Camp following the ANZ Championship Season. Geitz, Medhurst and Pitman subsequently went on to represent Australia at the 2011 World Netball Championships, while Steel played with the Australian Netball Diamonds in the 2011 Holden Netball Test Series. Steel was the only Mission Queensland Firebird to play in the 2011 Australian Netball Diamonds FastNet team.

Mission Queensland Firebirds Coach’s ReportMiSSiON QUEENSLAND FiREBiRDS Pre SeasonThe Mission Queensland Firebirds’ pre-season commenced in November 2010 and consisted of a weekly schedule that included three strength sessions, two to three conditioning sessions, one to two specialist sessions, two to three skill development sessions, two strategy sessions and one to two match play sessions.

During the pre-season, the Mission Queensland Firebirds travelled to Queenstown, New Zealand to play matches against three ANZ Championship teams – Southern Steel, Canterbury Tactix and Central Pulse. This was an invaluable experience for the team. The Mission Queensland Firebirds won all games, which turned out to be a prelude to what the season would hold for the team.

Mission Queensland Firebirds cultureAthlete Assessments were engaged to profile the athletes of the Mission Queensland Firebirds to give the coaches and playing group a better understanding of each other’s personalities, learning styles and differences.

Bo Hanson facilitated two, three hour sessions on assisting the team to develop a Firebirds Culture with the development of a plan for Team Values and Behaviours, and Season Targets and Goals.

The players developed their Team Values and Behaviours which was to become the catch cry for the team ‘PURPS’! The players also set their goals for the season.

The exercise was again very informative, rewarding and gave the playing group a clear direction on where they were going for the season and what they wanted to achieve. It also gave the coaches a point of reference to return to at anytime if player behaviour was not up to standard.

Setting out the goals for the season and how we were going to achieve them was pivotal to our success in 2011.

A Team Bonding weekend was held at Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast which involved group activities to physically and mentally test the player’s team work under stress. The playing group also presented to the Management Team their final list of team values and behaviours they would be expecting of each other throughout the season.

ANZ championship SeasonThe Mission Queensland Firebirds went through the 2011 ANZ Championship season undefeated, winning all 15 of their games. In doing so they created history as the first team in the ANZ Championship to complete a perfect season. They also set a record for the most consecutive wins in the competition. This success on court saw the Firebirds succeed off the court with several prestigous awards and accolades.

MEDiAIn 2011 Netball Queensland and the Mission Queensland Firebirds saw a substantial increase in overall media coverage around the state.

With their perfect season, the Mission Queensland Firebirds had an unprecedented 171% increase in media coverage in comparison to 2010. This included three front pages on Queensland’s leading daily newspaper, The Courier Mail. This is in addition to several other front page stories across a range of newspapers around the state including MX Brisbane, The Daily News, Sunshine Coast Daily and The Chronicle amongst others.

This interest in the Mission Queensland Firebirds led to increased coverage for Netball across the state with the Media and Communications Manager leveraging off the Mission Queensland Firebirds success to promote the sport of Netball further.

of The Courier Mail• May was an outstanding month for the Mission

Queensland Firebirds with the team nearly equalling the total number of clips in 2010. A total 1177 clips on the Mission Queensland Firebirds across TV, Radio, Print and Web – a record high for the team.

• Netball Queensland members and players had a number of articles within The Courier Mail and The Sunday Mail including: Weekend Warriors (QSNL Player); For the Love of the Game; and Country Carnival (WDNA Flood Bounce Back)

• Increased radio coverage around the state including a number of key spots in commercial FM and AM radio, including the Keys to the City Ceremony being broadcast live for 45 minutes

• The Ergon Energy Equipment Grant received fantastic coverage around the state with 19 separate articles including a Back Page of Sport in Mackay’s Daily Paper, The Daily Mercury.

• The Ergon Energy Netball Academy had a significant increase in coverage with 149 articles across the year including a front page in a Sunshine Coast Newspaper.

Overall Mission Queensland Firebirds media coverage grew significantly from 1,338 items in 2010 to an impressive 3,630 a massive 171% growth in coverage.

Media Coverage for Netball Queensland also grew substantially in 2011 from 1,470 items in 2010 to 2,013 in 2011 with a 36.9% growth.

The new competition format for Queensland State Netball League (QSNL) led to a substantial increase of media coverage of the sport in regional areas, with a spike in

interest and media coverage in the lead up to “home rounds”. This had a flow on effect with more and more news outlets following up with coaches and managers to provide coverage of trials.

SOciAL MEDiASocial Media has been a key focus for the Commercial Operations Team in 2011, with a particular focus on connecting with our members, fans and the general public through this highly interactive medium. This has proved highly successful with a significant increase in our presence online.

In early 2011, the decision was made to have a dedicated Mission Queensland Firebirds Facebook Page and a dedicated Netball Queensland Page, with tailored messages and information being delivered via each platform. This included question and answer with players, videos, exclusive photos, quizzes , competition and offers through our corporate partners.

The community of Netball supporters has grown significantly. The Netball Queensland Facebook site has grown from 1300 members to 3258, while the Mission Queensland Firebirds Facebook site now sits at 3269.

Another significant growth area in the Social Media Framework is within Twitter; instantaneously connecting with fans during significant times and promoting a conversation that positively promotes the sport of Netball, interacting with not only fans and the general public, but the media, sponsors and potential sponsors, other sporting teams and Netballers.

Twitter has seen significant growth throughout 2011 increasing from 120 followers to 1,558.

Mission Queensland Firebirds dedicated YouTube Channel was another successful and cost-effective way of connecting with our fans and Netball community. Mission Queensland Firebird Natalie Medhurst hosted a series of clips entitled ‘Chat with Nat’ which helped drive traffic to the website and provide an insight into the personal lives of the members of the Mission Queensland Firebirds.

MARKETiNg AND SPONSORShiPIn 2011 the marketing and sponsorship team continued to administer branding across Netball in Queensland ranging from the grassroots level to the elite.

The vital sponsorship component which enables Netball Queensland to deliver and support all aspects of our sport provides a crucial focus for the team throughout the year. The range of management from initial contact through to execution and relationships ensures every partnership receives expert services.

This year we saw Mission Foods enter into its second year as Major Sponsor of the Mission Queensland Firebirds and Mission Primary Schools Cup. A number of long term sponsors renewed their support including Queensland Health, Ergon Energy, QAS, Skins, Konica Minolta, Holden, Motorama, Goodlife Health Clubs, Carina Leagues Club, Kedron-Wavell Services Club, McDonalds, Yellow Cabs, Elastoplast and 4BC.

Along with these key renewals, we were very excited to welcome new partners to our brand including Telstra, Gilbert, Logan City Council and Game Clothing.

A variety of campaigns were executed throughout the year as valuable resources and equipment was provided to assist in the promotion and the day to day running of Netball.The annual Sign On campaign provided every Association with promotional giveaways and collateral to assist with their individual campaign and encourage their local communities to become part of the sport.

The Ergon Energy Equipment Grant delivered $440 worth of much needed equipment to the 76 Associations who participated. The items include post pads, bibs, water bottles and netballs.

The provision of valuable resources to Associations for use in sourcing, servicing and implementing partnerships across all levels of Netball was a key achievement.

To ensure we drive our sport forward specifically through the Holden Cruze Cup and Queensland State Netball League commercial guidelines have been implemented to assist in operating at a professional level in each region.

With the ever growing support for these two competitions especially across the entire state we explored our broadcast options for the two hosted Grand Finals in 2011.

An online live stream broadcast was produced for both events and by taking this next step forward allowed us to provide instant access to those unable to attend. This live feed of the game proved a success and through the valuable assistance of our volunteers led by Mr James Exelby and students from Victoria Point High School along with key commentary led by Paula Stuart from the Golden South Jaguars and Darren Madigan from SportzScene we were able to take the game online.

In addition to these key tasks a significant contribution is made by the team in executing the Mission Queensland Firebirds brand. The design, production and distribution of promotional collateral, day to day operational tasks, vital match day role and provision of events throughout the season.

The financial statements cover Queensland Netball Association Incorporated as an individual entity. Queensland Netball Association Inc. is an association incorporated in Queensland under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981. NOTE 1 - SUMMARY OF SigNiFicANT AccOUNTiNg POLiciES

Basis of Preparation Queensland Netball Association Incorporated has elected to early adopt the pronouncements AASB 1053: Application of Tiers of Australian Accounting Standards and AASB 2010-2: Amendments to Australian Accounting Standards arising from Reduced Disclosure Requirements to the annual reporting period beginning 1July 2010.

The financial statements are general purpose financial statements that have been prepared in accordance with Austalian Accounting Standards, Australian Accounting Interpretations and the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (Qld).

Australian Accounting Standards set out accounting policies that the AASB has concluded would result in financial statements containing relevant and reliable information about transactions, events and conditions to which they apply. Material accounting policies adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are presented below and have been consistently applied unless otherwise stated.

The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs, modified, where applicable, by the measurement at fair value of selected non-current assets, financial assets and financial liabilities. The financial statements were authorised for issue on 14 February 2012 by the members of the committee.

Accounting Policies a. income Tax No provision for income tax has been raised as the association operates solely as a non-profit sporting association and accordingly it is exempt from income tax under section 50-45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.

b. inventories Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. The cost of manufactured products includes direct materials, direct labour and an appropriate portion of variable and fixed overheads. Overheads are applied on the basis of normal operating capacity. Costs are assigned on the basis of weighted average costs.

c. Property, Plant and Equipment Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses.

Plant and equipment Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis less depreciation and impairment losses.

The carrying amount of plant and equipment is reviewed annually by directors to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount from these assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flows that will be received from the assets’ employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash flows have been discounted to their present values in determining recoverable amounts.

The cost of fixed assets constructed within the association includes the cost of materials, direct labour, borrowing costs and an appropriate proportion of fixed and variable overheads.

Subsequent costs are included in the asset’s carrying amount or recognised as a separate asset, as appropriate, only when it is probable that future economic benefits associated with the item will flow to the association and the cost of the item can be measured reliably. All other repairs and maintenance are charged to the income statement during the financial period in which they are incurred.

Depreciation The depreciable amount of all fixed assets including building and capitalised lease assets, is depreciated on a straight-line basis over their useful lives commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. Leasehold improvements are depreciated over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements.

The assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed and adjusted, if appropriate, at each balance date.

An asset’s carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount if the asset’s carrying amount is greater than its estimated recoverable amount.

Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains and losses are included in the income statement. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluation relating to that asset are transferred to retained earnings.

d. Leases Lease payments for operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are charged as expenses in the periods in which they are incurred.

Lease incentives under operating leases are recognised as a liability and amortised on a straight-line basis over the life of the lease term.

e. Financial instrumentsinitial recognition and measurement Financial assets and financial liabilities are recognised when the entity becomes a party to the contractual provisions to the instrument. For financial assets, this is equivalent to the date that the association commits itself to either purchase or sell the asset (ie trade date accounting is adopted).

Financial instruments are initially measured at fair value plus transaction costs except where the instrument is classified ‘at fair value through profit or loss’ in which case transaction costs are expensed to profit or loss immediately.

classification and subsequent measurementFinance instruments are subsequently measured at either fair value or amortised cost using the effective interest rate method or cost. Fair value represents the amount for which an asset could be exchanged or a liability settled, between knowledgeable, willing parties. Where available, quoted prices in an active market are used to determine fair value. In other circumstances, valuation techniques are adopted.

Amortised cost is calculated as: (i) the amount at which the financial asset or financial liability is measured at initial recognition; (ii) less principal repayments; (iii) plus or minus the cumulative amortisation of the difference, if any, between the amount initially recognised and the maturity amount calculated using the effective interest method; and (iv) less any reduction for impairment.

The effective interest method is used to allocate interest income or interest expense over the relevant period and is equivalent to the rate that exactly discounts estimated future cash payments or receipts (including fees, transaction costs

and other premiums or discounts) through the expected life (or when this cannot be reliably predicted, the contractual term) of the financial instrument to the net carrying amount of the financial asset or financial liability. Revisions to expected future net cash flows will necessitate an adjustment to the carrying value with a consequential recognition of an income or expense in profit or loss.

The association does not designate any interests in subsidiaries, associates or joint venture entities as being subject to the requirements of accounting standards specifically applicable to financial instruments.

(i) Financial assets at fair value through profit or loss Financial assets are classified at ‘fair value through profit or loss’ when they are held for trading for the purpose of short-term profit taking. Such assets are subsequently measured at fair value with changes in carrying value being included in profit or loss. The association has not held any financial assets at fair value through profit or loss in the current or comparative financial year.

(ii) Loans and receivablesLoans and receivables are non-derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not quoted in an active market and are subsequently measured at amortised cost.

(iii) held-to-maturity investments Held-to-maturity investments are non-derivative financial assets that have fixed maturities and fixed or determinable payments, and it is the association’s intention to hold these investments to maturity. They are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method.

The association has not held any held-to-maturity investments in the current or comparative financial year.

(iv) Available-for-sale financial assets Available-for-sale financial assets are non-derivative financial assets that are either not capable of being classified into other categories of financial assets due to their nature, or they are designated as such by management. They comprise investments in the equity of other entities where there is neither a fixed maturity nor fixed or determinable payments.

(v) Financial liabilities Non-derivative financial liabilities (excluding financial guarantees) are subsequently measured at amortised cost.

impairmentAt each reporting date, the association assesses whether there is objective evidence that a financial instrument has been impaired. In the case of available-for-sale financial instruments, a prolonged decline in the value of the instrument is considered to determine whether an impairment has arisen. Impairment losses are recognised in the income statement.

DerecognitionFinancial assets are derecognised where the contractual right to receipt of cash flows expires or the asset is transferred to another party whereby the entity no longer has any significant continuing involvement in the risks and benefits associated with the asset. Financial liabilities are derecognised where the related obligations are either discharged, cancelled or expire. The difference between the carrying value of the financial liability extinguished or transferred to another party and the fair value of consideration paid, including the transfer of non-cash assets or liabilities assumed, is recognised in profit or loss.

f. impairment of Assets At each reporting date, the association reviews the carrying values of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value-in-use, is compared to the asset’s carrying value. Any excess of the asset’s carrying value over its recoverable amount is expensed to the income statement.

Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an individual asset, the association estimates the recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs.

g. Employee BenefitsProvision is made for the association’s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to balance date. Employee benefits that are expected to be settled within one year have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled, plus related on-costs. Employee benefits payable later than one year have been measured at the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made for those benefits. These cashflows are discounted using market yields on national government bonds with terms to maturity that match the expected timing of cashflows.

h. cash and cash Equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at-call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities on the balance sheet.

i. RevenueRevenue from capitation fees and Government grants are recognised upon the receipt of funds.

Interest revenue is recognised on a proportional basis taking into account the interest rates applicable to the financial assets.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and |services tax (GST).

j. Borrowing costs Borrowing costs directly attributable to the acquisition, construction or production of assets that necessarily take a substantial period of time to prepare for their intended use or sale, are added to the cost of those assets, until such time as the assets are substantially ready for their intended use or sale.

All other borrowing costs are recognised as expenses in the period in which they are incurred.

k. goods and Services Tax (gST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office. In these circumstances the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the balance sheet are shown inclusive of GST.

Cash flows are presented in the cash flow statement on a gross basis, except for the GST component of investing and financing activities, which are disclosed as operating cash flows.

l. comparative FiguresWhen required by Accounting Standards, comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in presentation for the current financial year.

m. Key Estimates impairmentThe association assesses impairment at each reporting date by evaluation of conditions and events specific to the association that may be indicative of impairment triggers. Recoverable amounts of relevant assets are reassessed using value-in-use calculations which incorporate various key assumptions.

A provision has been recognised for employee benefits relating to long service leave for employees. In calculating the present value of future cash flows in respect of long service leave, the probability of long service leave being taken is based upon historical data. The bank loan and overdraft are secured by: - An existing Registered Mortgage given by the Association over the Association headquarters building at 210 Beaudesert Road, Moorooka;

- a Registered Bill of Sale and Equitable Mortgage over the whole of the assets of the Association.

The overdraft facility has a limit of $50,000 and incurs interest at stepped rates dependant on utilised overdraft balances. At 31 December 2011 balances up to the facility limit incurred interest at 9.74% p.a. while balances exceeding the facility incurred interest at 15.49% p.a.

The bank redraw facility expired in November 2010. The facility was resigned in July 2011.

Report on the Financial Report

We have audited the accompanying financial report of Queensland Netball Association Incorporated,

which comprises the statement of financial position as at 31 December 2011 and the statement of

comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows for the year then

ended, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies, other explanatory notes and the

statement by members of the committee.

Committee’s Responsibility for the Financial Report

The committee of the association is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the

financial report in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards – Reduced Disclosure

Requirements (including Australian Accounting Interpretations) and the Associations Incorporation

Act 1981 (Qld) and for such internal control as the committee determines is necessary to enable the

preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or

error.

Auditor’s Responsibility

Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We conducted

our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards require that we

comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the

audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures

in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the

assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error.

In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s

preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are

appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness

of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting

policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as

evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.
