The medium is the mes-sage, says communica-

tion guru Marshall McLuhan. Hecalled it technological deter-minism, a concept that claimsthat communication technologyshapes and influences themessage we convey. Thousandsof years ago though, the Lordsaid it before McLuhan did, albeit only implicitly in todaysGospel. The reference was notin technology, but in the persons

who deliver the message. Aprophet is not without honorexcept in his native place andamong his own kin and in hisown house (Mk 6:4), the Lordsaid. Called to be prophetsand spokespersons of God, webecome the medium (or media)of his message. Result? We getidentied with the message, sothat the message we bring isalways seen in the light of whowe are. To people of goodwill,we are indeed conveyors ofthe message; to the stubbornand unbelieving, we become astumbling block or a scandal. Ina way, they nd the messengera convenient excuse for notaccepting the message.

A story is told of an atheistwho, despite his friends faith-value witnessing and prayers,

has refused to believe in theHigher Being. Fed up, Godappeared to him in a dream andinstructed him to travel in a boatto the middle of the lake andmeet him there. Notwithstandinghis consternation and doubts,he decided to give it a try.

Prophecy as Stepping Stones to Faith

While the man was alone in aboat in the middle of the lake,Jesus appeared to him andapproached him by walkingon the water. The Lord thenasked him what he thought ofhim. The man said dryly: I amsurprised you cannot swim!

It is difcult to persuade aperson who has already madeup his mind on the basis ofthe character of the one whois persuading him. At best,a reasonable option wouldbe to walk away or assumeanother identity. We couldstick to our guns, stand ourground and play the heros roleof persistence and tenacity. We could succumb, to thepressure and give in to theintimidation for our own safety.Doing so, we could be dilutingthe message and compromisingthe One who sent us.

The haughty person picksa fight with his guide, saysan African proverb. Sadly,

this happens. The guide bearsthe brunt of contempt if the

people do not like where he istaking them. The prophet suffersridicule and derision if andwhen he tells the people thingsthey do not want to hear.

Another African adage forall of us: A tree no taller thanan ant cannot shade you. Asprophets, we need to be tallerthan ourselves, bigger than ourminds, mightier than who we

are. Our prophetic calling asChristians is greater than ourworldly ambitions and fears.Inasmuch as we are too humanand too imperfect for our owngood, we still must aspire to bedifferent from the world, takingcomfort from the fact that nopreacher is effective enoughfor a dull listener, no doctor iscompetent enough for a sickperson who does not want toget cured.

We should know better:overfamiliarity breeds contempt. But we should also knowthis: We can get overfamiliarwith contempt without beingdispirited and knocked off ourbase. People can take offenseat us for telling them painfultruths and showing them thedifcult path to holiness. But,

just as it is up to them to takeus as stumbling blocks, it shouldalso be upon us to treat them asstepping stones to our growth infaith and in our commitment toGods message.

become too elated, becauseo the abundance o therevelations, a thorn in the feshwas given to me, an angel oSatan, to beat me, to keep merom being too elated. Three

I will rather boastmost gladly o my weaknesses,in order that the power oChrist may dwell with me.Thereore, I am content withweaknesses, insults, hardships,

Message to Academics and ScientistsThe Second Vacan Council sent a very special greeng to

seekers aer truth, people of thought and science, explorers of

humanity, of the universe, and of history.

This special message was sent, because the parcipants of the

Council, like academics and sciensts, are always on the outlook

for truth. The four-year Council was a more aenve search for

and deepening of the message of truth entrusted to the Church

and an eort at more perfect docility to the Spirit of truth.

The Church and academics serve humanity through their

collaboraon. We are the friends of your vocaon as searchers,

companions in your fagues, admirers of your successes and, ifnecessary, consolers in your discouragement and your failures.

The Council encouraged these truth-seekers and reiterated

words of Saint Augusne: Let us seek with the desire to nd, and

nd with the desire to seek sll more.
