What happens when a fire breaksout in a forest?

One day the sky over the forest in Bear Valley, California, filled with smoke. The people who lived nearby knew what it meant. They knew a fire was close. The smoke made it hard to see and to breathe. People were afraid they would choke.

Oh, no! You have a broken bone. Where do

you go? To the hospital emergency room, of

course. The emergency room can be a busy place.

Ambulances and people arrive there during the day

and night. People are brought there if they have a

serious medical problem.

Doctors and nurses work in the emergency room.

Their job is to aid people who are sick or hurt.

Other people help patients, too. They help keep the

hospital running properly. Let’s meet some of the

A Way to Help Planet Earth

Plastic bottles are piled high at recycling centers.

GenreNonfiction gives information about real people, things, or events.

Text StructureProblem and SolutionA problem is something that needs to be worked out. A solution is something that fixes a problem.

Keeping Earth healthy is an important job.

That’s what environmental conservation is all

about. People who do that job are working to

keep the air, land, and water clean. They are

also working to keep endangered plants and

animals from becoming extinct.

One of the hardest jobs is solving the

problem of trash. The trouble with trash is

that it keeps piling up. We could run out

of places to put it.
