“If you've never been thrilled to the very edges ofyour soul by a flower in spring bloom, maybeyour soul has never been in bloom.”

--Audra FoveoHappy May everyone! I hope that you are allenjoying the sunshine (finally!) and theglorious flowers everywhere. I am alsoprofoundly, deeply, gratefully, ecstaticallyenjoying no more rain. Finally we can work!As I write, we are over 150% of normal forour snowpack levels. Woohoo!

And have you gotten a load of the weedsout there?? Oh my goodness, the weedsaround my office reached 40” in two weeks. We have never, ever had so much weedingto do on our maintenance jobs or to prepnew sites (and clearly we are behind onoffice maintenance as well).

I like to poke around on the web to seewhat’s new and what’s hot. Houzz (thewebsite that has been helping homeownersdesign their homes) recently completed asurvey of the newest trends in landscaping,so I thought it would be interesting to letyou in on them (along with, of course, myeditorializing):Front Yards Make a StatementHomeowners are making significant changesto their front yards, creating landscapes thatare distinctly different from neighboringproperties. Two in five say their new front

yards are very or extremely different fromothers in the neighborhood post-update 41%.(I bet this includes all the folks that aretaking out their lawns, planting veggies intheir front yards, or making habitat-friendlylandscapes. Let’s hear it for losing boringgreen lawns!)New Home, New YardThe share of outdoor projects motivated by arecent home purchase increased in 2017 (33%vs. 25% in the 2016 study). At the same time, the share of projects triggered by somethingbreaking down and/or finally having timeor money for the project declined. (Wheredid they do this survey? Houses are soexpensive here that I think it takes a fewyears for new home buyers to be able tocommence to begin to imagine spendingmoney on landscaping – at least that’s whatI’m finding. I have only had two brand newhome buyers that had the funds to do amajor overhaul right after purchase, butmany who have “lived with” their awfullandscaping for a few years while stemmingthe financial hemorrhage from the homepurchase and then finally(!) being ready totake on a landscaping redo.)Cultivating Curb AppealMore than half of those updating their frontyards say that beds or borders (47%), shrubs

(29%), and perennials (28%) are the mostimportant features of their home’s curbappeal. (Note - no expansive green lawns arelisted. Free us from green lawn tyranny!)Lighting Goes SmartNearly half of outdoor-renovating home-owners are updating lighting (45%), withmost choosing LEDs (73%). Remarkably, onein five homeowners is choosing “smart”lighting that can be controlled via a mobiledevice or computer. (Are you installinglighting on all your jobs? I do lighting onprobably 95% of my jobs and I am onlyinstalling LED. Probably 1/3 of my clientsare opting for the expensive FX Luxorcontroller that lets you control your lightsfrom your mobile device. If you haven’t triedthem, you’re missing out. They are reallygreat, high quality lights and customers lovethem.)And more...For more info, check this out for yourselves. There are many more interesting tidbits.https://info.houzz.com/rs/804-JLJ-529/images/HouzzLandscapeStudy2017.pdfLast But Not Least...By the time you read this, you will havealready turned in your CLCA East Baybeautification award entries and maybe evenbowled a few games with your colleagues atthe Danville Bowl. I wish you all the best ofluck and I look forward to seeing you at theawards dinner on June 9. Please don’t forgetto remind your entry homeowners of thedates of judging: Thursday May 11 andFriday May 12. See you in June!!

Drivable Grass® was originally designed tohave commonly used spray irrigationsystems installed underneath the product, including fitting sprinkler heads throughcut voids in the mat or spraying fromoutside the installation. This conventionaloverspray irrigation system has been usedsuccessfully with Drivable Grass® for manyyears.

Soil Retention, manufacturer of DrivableGrass®, recently worked with NetafimUSA, a leader in drip irrigation systems, toprovide alternatives to conventionalirrigation systems in an effort to conservewater. Netafim USA Techline® EZ driplinewith 6” emitter spacing turned out to be aperfect fit with Drivable Grass® and wasinstalled as a test in the summer of 2016 atthe Carlsbad, California corporate officeparking lot.

A drip irrigation system is generallymore efficient than conventional sprinkler

systems because it delivers low volumes ofwater directly to the plant roots, minimizingwater loss to wind, runoff evaporation, oroverspray and uses 20-50% less water. Theunique design, limited thickness, andtypical 2” thick bedding course belowDrivable Grass® makes drip irrigation idealfor use with this product due to thecontrolled delivery of water right to the rootzone/bedding course.

Three hundred linear feet of Techline®EZ dripline with 6” emitter spacing wereinstalled and turned into 8 inch row spacingin the crevices/grooves of the DrivableGrass® for a coverage area of 200 squarefeet. Different fittings were used to allow forobstructions and curves.

The drip irrigation system was securedin place with landscape staples. TheDrivable Grass® was infilled with a mixtureof 75/25 sand (ASTM-C33)/compost(Kellogg fine ground compost) and then

seeded with a 70% fescue and 30% bentgrass mixture. This grass blend isconsidered a California drought tolerantmix. To ensure the seed was kept moist, aseed topper was used to lightly cover theinstallation and some overspray was used.

The parking lot test site area is used on adaily basis at Soil Retention’s headquartersoffice in Carlsbad. After six months, thedrip irrigation system has proven to be agreat success saving water and money.

Drivable Grass® is the premierepermeable, flexible and plantable concretepavement system. It is plantable and anideal solution for daily driving applications.
