Eminent guests, dignitaries, members of staff, guild cabinet, graduates, families, colleagues and friends of Cavendish University Uganda, I welcome you all to this auspicious event.
We are here today to celebrate the 8th Cavendish University Uganda’s Graduation under the theme, “Commitment to Excellence as a key to graduate success”, to acknowledge the great work the graduands have done, to honour them with warm congratulations, and to send them off to the next steps in their lives with the blessings and good wishes life has to offer.
Graduands, each one of you is here today because of your own sustained hard work. You have required courage to face the challenges of dynamic university learning and have had to develop certain qualities of character and mind to achieve this. Qualities like self-drive, enthusiasm, rigour, the capacity to think independently, to listen actively, and life-long learning. With these qualities, you are empowered to create new opportunities with confidence and overcome challenges and unexpected setbacks.
One of the great joys of working and studying at Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) is the vast demography you get to engage with. You’ve explored with different cultures, ethnicities, languages and learning environments. This has therefore presented you with a chance to fuse and merge minds with experts from various disciplines and industrial knowledge.
Message from the CHANCELLOR of cavendish University Uganda

I wish to commend the CUU team manning the Learning Technology platforms for the great work they’re doing to boost distance learning programmes which have made education more accessible and flexible. We have in the world today, fewer people in absolute poverty than ever because of quick access to information and education.
I urge all Graduands to focus on steady progress but with a high sense of perfection. Remember, education is merely a journey but never a destination. As you graduate, you have the opportunity to do your part, to help create a better future for your families, communities, country and Africa. Allow the face of CUU shine through you, and be the institution’s flag bearer. Let the world see that indeed “Success begins at Cavendish”.
Big and significant achievements are usually not made by individuals on their own but are achieved through teamwork. I therefore acknowledge, and thank those who are with you today, - your sponsors, friends, families, all of whom have played some part in helping you to be the best you can be.
And now dear Graduands, soon to be Graduates, we as CUU have endeavored to facilitate a journey of experiences to help you grow and transform. The whole University celebrates with you. We are proud of your achievements. But there is much more to do, and today only marks the dawn of a new beginning. Conclusively, I call each of you to action, to go out from here with confidence, with our blessings and best wishes, and work actively towards living a divinely enriched life.
Thank you.

Message from the Chairperson of cavendish University Council
It is my privilege as Chairperson of Council to congratulate all graduates upon achieving this milestone.
The theme of today’s ceremony is “commitment to excellence as a key for graduate success.” This theme is particularly important because the world is now moving into the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and Africa cannot afford to be a mere spectator. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that Africa is a major player, innovator and power in this global Fourth Industrial Revolution which is driven by talent that is capable of inventing and deploying artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and a new interface of human-and-machine. Talent actually means having a serious commitment to lifelong development of knowledge, attitudes and skills—i.e., those with a commitment to excellence. God has endowed our continent with every natural ingredient necessary for economic productivity and success. But it’s our special responsibility as a university to add the final necessary ingredient—without which Africa will not be able to participate properly as a peer in the Fourth Industrial Revolution—and that is talent, graduate talent that joins the spaces of work and of entrepreneurship with a “commitment to excellence.”
May I offer the example of a man whom I know well, and in whose house I learnt how to think clearly and how to love Africa more, Professor Ngugi wa Thiong’o, now 81 years old. He has recently published his epic of the title “The Perfect Nine” or in the original Kikuyu “Kenda Muiyuru.”
Ngugi started pursuing excellence over 60 years ago at Alliance High School in Kenya where he started writing, and as an undergraduate at Makerere University here in Uganda where he wrote his first two classic novels. 60 years later, he is still pursuing excellence. Ngugi’s message to us is that we must pursue excellence relentlessly because it is our collective responsibility to fight for Africa’s success and self-respect among the other people and continents of this world.
To our graduates of today, congratulations on completing the first part of your education, and welcome to the second part of your education. Please note that this second part of your education entails lifelong pursuit of excellence in your chosen field of work or entrepreneurship.
God Bless!
we must pursue excellence

and self-respect

Message from the vice chancellorof cavendish University uganda
be passionate about what you do because Passion is the fuel that ignites your desire to work hard
Passion
Graduation day is a memorable day. Who would not feel overjoyed to be a part of this unforgettable occasion when our students are going to reap the well-deserved fruits of their toil. On behalf of Cavendish University Uganda (CUU), I welcome everyone.
Today, CUU presents to the world 966 graduands who are proficient and equipped with market-relevant knowledge, skills and competencies to effectively undertake jobs that relate to their disciplines. We have developed their capacity to think analytically and creatively, to examine social problems from a diverse array of perspectives, and to understand how to navigate in an increasingly global and technologically driven world. They are groomed with ethos, values and attitudes that are needed in today’s business environment. I can proudly inform the world that CUU graduates are responsible, educated, employable and entrepreneurial.
This year, CUU is holding its 8th graduation ceremony. The theme, which was thoughtfully selected is: Commitment to Excellence as key to Graduate Success. You, the graduands know that in CUU, excellence is not fashionable sloganeering but a culture in action. It is a sum total of small tasks performed in the best way and processes undertaken perfectly, consistently. It is an attitude that is committed to impeccable execution of activities focusing on the best results possible. I challenge all of you, as I have challenged myself, to commit yourself to continued growth and self-improvement and to stay focused on achieving your goals in an excellent manner regardless of the setbacks.
As our cherished motto says, “Success begins at Cavendish”. To maintain this success demands that you strive for excellence or perfection in whatever you purpose to do and how you do it. Motivation to excel is always superior to mere talent. Exercising your acquired skills and competencies will always serve you well in life but commitment to excellence will propel you throughout life. Please, remember that it is only by improving yourself that you will become a positive force in your communities. There is no doubt that you will meet setbacks. However, the success we are celebrating today is proof that we should never underestimate the value of focused persistence. Commit to working hard even when you’re not yet reaping the benefits knowing that it is the last person standing who wins the race.
Dear graduands (soon to be graduates), as you commence into a new life, make the mental commitment to focus on solutions not problems. Commitment to excellence means allowing no space in your mind for thoughts about failure or low quality. There is a sufficient pool of successful people whose achievement speaks to the benefits of visionary work, persistent perfection and firm belief in success. As you do this, make the choice to first measure your success by your work ethic, exalting integrity and self-respect.
Be thankful for what you have accomplished but understand that to be highly successful, you need to focus on higher goals after making a certain level of success. It is through consistent and diligent work and constant raising of standards, coupled with patience and flexibility, that you can climb the ladder of great success. Above all, be passionate about what you do. Passion is the fuel that ignites your desire to work hard. Nothing succeeds without passionate, focused, hardworking people. You are all invited to support your alma mater by joining Cavendish University Uganda Alumni Association, a forum through which you will also benefit from the more experienced colleagues who completed ahead of you. Congratulations once again. God bless you, God bless Cavendish University Uganda; God bless Uganda and Africa.
Prof. John F. Mugisha Vice Chancellor - Cavendish University Uganda.

Message from the executive director of cavendish University uganda
One of Uganda’s most successful businessmen once told me a business secret, “I don’t start to do anything unless I am sure I can do it very, very well.” Reflecting on this man’s unique yet huge and prosperous interests in diverse sectors, I couldn’t help but direct our graduating class of 2019 to contemplate afresh on the theme of today’s graduation, “Commitment to Excellence as a Key to Graduate Success”.
Today marks a maturity reached by the 2019 graduating class which, following months upon years of what is today a very grueling preparatory process, is being launched to excel in the world of employment and entrepreneurship. Hearty Congratulations!
I want to imagine that, during your time at our university, you have observed our own search for excellence through the very rapid and innovative changes that we have made to our academic offering to ensure that all taught course modules promote innovation, active, participatory and practical learning by embedding real life situations. These changes were purposed to prepare you for the exit we are witnessing today. It is delightful to know that many of you have indicated to have found your life’s purpose from this student-centered and transformative teaching and learning approach, at Cavendish University Uganda.
Because graduation day is a moment to showcase the fruits of one’s labour, I wish to recognise that our university continued to lead the way of innovation in the past year through the successful introduction of Working Adult – bachelor Programmes, tailored to the needs and lifestyle of working adults seeking progression as employees or business owners. Our enhanced Distance Learning product continues to attract both local and international students, offering opportunities to people in unique circumstances to flexibly access high quality education. We have formed valuable partnerships with leading companies such as IBM and Barclays Bank/NFT Consult through which thousands of our students have been empowered through exposure to required skill-sets necessary to launch their own paths to success in today’s digital age. Our students continued to remain at the forefront of innovation culminating in a leading student mentorship organisation, the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) giving a grant worth $25,000 to one of our students to mentor 200 learners in 2018.
I wish to recognise the efforts of our sponsors, regulators, staff and alumni who have made many individual sacrifices in supporting our graduands.
To our prized graduands, while the world is changing at a perplexing speed, I am sure that you will respond to the change and succeed, if you commit to excellence. Do always recall what one of the most imaginative writers of our time, Maya Angelou, said so simply: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.
“Success is liking yourself, liking what
you do, and liking how you do IT”.

Message from the guild president of cavendish University uganda
I am honoured and delighted as the leader of the students’ body to be a part of the 8th Graduation ceremony of our great institution, Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) under the theme: “Commitment to Excellence as a Key to Graduate Success”.
Graduands, this theme challenges you to distinctively contribute to your communities with the knowledge and skills acquired while at CUU. Commitment and dedication to excellence are key to overcoming any challenge and attaining success in all spheres of life. In contrast with the famous idiom which denotes, “half a loaf is better than none”, a full loaf is definitely better than half. Therefore, as you step outside the confines of the University, aim at attaining the absolute whole with the sky as the limit.
One of the most admirable qualities about this Institution is its student -centricity aimed to improve the quality of student life through academic, intellectual and social life activities such as; Community cleaning, Google digital skills training, NFT Consult Employability Programme, Mr & Miss Cavendish beauty pageants, Talk Shows, Think Tank Initiatives, to mention but a few. CUU students have registered a couple of accomplishments resulting from their various innovations such as participating in the Hult price competitions where the winner will walk away with a grand prize of one-million-dollars, the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) where a grant worth $25,000 was given to one of our students to mentor 200 learners in 2018, and many more. Indeed “Success begins at Cavendish University”
On behalf of the student guild leadership and the entire student body, I acknowledge with much gratitude the efforts of the University Management, University Council, Maarifa Education, academic, administrative and support staff. I also extend my appreciation to the Parents and Guardians for investing in the education of your children. There is no better investment than equipping your children with knowledge, skills and confidence. Thank you for entrusting the future of your children to Cavendish University Uganda.
Congratulations upon your achievement today. I urge you to increase your thirst for knowledge and understanding, and to uphold the CUU Core Values of Self–Reliance, Integrity, Responsibility, Excellence, Respect and Innovation.
As alumni, you will be home away from home and don’t forget to get registered before you leave Kampala. You are always welcome to CUU. God Bless You.

Message from the chairman of cavendish University Uganda alumni ASSOCIATION
It is a great honour to share in the joy and achievement of Cavendish University Uganda’s 8th Graduation Ceremony with the graduands who have journeyed through Cavendish University lecture rooms and can today attest to the excellent services offered by this exceptional institution.
Today I stand before you as a testimony that I was indeed transformed by the academic model of Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) and I encourage today’s graduands to appreciate first, the choice of joining CUU for your studies and second, the pride in having gone through the lecture rooms and exam auditoriums of CUU and warrant that it was worthwhile to have excelled through professionals to scale the high performance levels you have reached upon your graduation today.
Perhaps, some of us who may not realise it yet, will soon discover that we have been well prepared for our future, when the values, ethics and knowledge we gain at CUU come to full play after we step out of here today.
Besides todays’ graduation ceremony, we have gathered here because of our attachment to this institution, our great teaching staff and our recognition of the efforts these have made in the results obtained out of the teaching and learning achieved from CUU. We should not only be happy for our achievements, but are, in fact, compelled to take such occasions to ratify that the heat we endured and the guidance of the great brains of this institution caused us to be triumphant today, and that Cavendish University has taught us to continuously improve ourselves, ultimately mandating us to be the worthy ambassadors of excellence from this remarkable institution. On behalf of all present here today, allow me as Chair of the CUU Alumni Association to call upon all the graduands to be proud of our great institution and feel the joy of joining the Alumni Association so that we, together, can work with the university management to market it as a hub of excellence, including carrying out a life-long commitment to assist those who don’t find easy privilege to study and let alone find work or start businesses like we did, to attain the same. That way, we shall be worthy Alumni of CUU and share the same vision and mission of our university.
Thank you all and God Bless you on your new-found achievement and the journey into the new world of excellence, professionalism and achievement.
we have been well prepared for our future, when the values, ethics and
knowledge we gain at CUU come to full play
after we step out of here.
