Michelle Allbright: Strictly Come Danc- ing hotfooted it to the title of best talent show blasting Britain’s Got Talent out of the way at this year’s National Television awards, but presenters Ant and Dec continue to reign supreme in the best entertainment presenter category, clinch- ing it for a 12th consecutive year. The NTAs drew the celebrities out on bleak January night despite the cold, as stars of the small screen gathered at London’s O2 Arena on January 23. The event, which was hosted by Dermot O’Leary, now in its 18th year is televised live and was watched by around 5.9 million viewers. Whilst the NTAs may not be as glamorous as the Oscars, Golden Globes, or even the Baftas the awards are voted for directly by the public, so recipients are said to be especially honoured when they are chosen. So, who did the nation vote amongst their favour- ites… Strictly Come Dancing by winning the best entertainment programme category ended X Factor’s three year reign, and, won by Louis Smith, it was said to be one of the most successful series of the show to date. Elsewhere, our longest running TV soap Coronation Street proved it’s still got legs by running away with the best serial drama in a tense live vote at the end of the ceremony, seeing off Eastenders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. In recognition of 2012’s sporting legacy, a special award was given to honour the impact of the Olympics and Paralympics broadcast on both the BBC and Channel 4. Clare Balding, who has received acclaim for her presenting work at the events, was joined on stage by Olympi- ans, Paralympians, and the London 2012 organising committee chairman, Lord Coe. It was a night of double success for Ant and Dec as ITV show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here scooped the prize for best entertainment programme. But fans of Doctor Who will have been disappointed as the show missed out on winning the best drama award to Downton Abbey. Long-running BBC2 quiz show QI, hosted by Stephen Fry, was voted best comedy panel show. Another BBC1 show, Frozen Planet, was named best documentary series, despite contro- versy over scenes which viewers assumed were filmed in the Arctic but were actually shot in a zoo. This Morning won best daytime show despite a recent live show blunder in which presenter Phillip Schofield linked several Conservative politicians with allegations of sexual attacks on children. The mistake led to ITV paying Lord McAlp- ine more than £125k in damages and legal costs. Joanna Lumley was presented with a lifetime achievement award for a TV career that spans several decades, as well as her formidable efforts as campaigner. Lumley has starred on both large and small screen and is perhaps most fondly remembered for her roles in cult TV shows The New Avengers and Absolutely Fabulous. As a campaigner she has spoken out on behalf of the Gurkhas, Free Tibet, and mental health issues. David Cameron made a pre-recorded video message to pay tribute to Joanna Lumley. Lumley said afterwards: “It was the most unexpected and earth-shattering thing to hear these people speak so generously of me. To sit there with my son beside me, it was unbelievably touching.” Forthcoming Star Wars Episode VII movie will be directed by Star Trek director JJ Abrams, Disney has confirmed. Star Wars creator George Lucas described Abrams as the “ideal choice” to direct the movie, adding “the legacy couldn’t be in better hands”. The movie will be penned by Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt. Episode VII is expected to be released in 2015.
