Masters Games hit the ground runningThe South Island Masters Games is in full swing and it will only get busier, say organis-ers.The games, which come to Nelson every two years, kicked off on Saturday with sports across the region, including athletics, waka ama, stand up paddleboarding, volleyball, basketball, tennis, indoor netball, mountain-

biking, touch, motorcross and badminton.Games manager Rita Merriman says more than 2100 athletes have signed up for the games and the weather has played ball. “I’ve had a lot of people from out of town say how nice the weather is and they’re saying ‘typical Nelson’. Now I just hope it lasts until Sunday.”Despite a busy weekend, Rita says this com-

ing weekend will be even busier with netball and football – the two most popular sports – kicking off on Friday. On Friday and Saturday night there will be parties under a marquee at the games village at Saxton Field. For more news on the games, see page 16, 17 and 26.

Strange items

found in our Sewer

System

Andrew Board

A glass eye, a $3000 gold and diamond ring, a child’s plas-tic potty and a 1.5 metre long log have all been pulled from the Nelson Sewer System over the past few years.Information released to Nelson Weekly shows some of the strange items found by council staff and con-tractors. Many of the items

were found when clearing out blockages, and commu-nications manager for the council, Paul Shattock, says towels, t-shirts, underpants and bras were often the main culprits. When the Atawhai rising main pipe was cleaned out a couple of years ago they found two full-sized railway sleepers in the pipe. Paul says they had no idea how

they got in there other than “probably when the pipeline was being constructed”.Among the other strange items were a dog bone from a pet store, which was large enough to cause a block-age in a 200mm street sewer line; false teeth and plenty of rubbish. Paul says most of the items are simply thrown away, but the gold ring was handed into police.

More than a dozen workers at Bunnings went on strike out-side the Stoke hardware store on Saturday, over a proposal to put staff on a collective agree-ment.Nelson-based FIRST Union organiser Rachel Boyack says Bunnings is proposing a collec-tive agreement that will hand bosses the power to chop and

change start and finish times without the workers’ agree-ment.Bunnings issued a statement yesterday saying they have put forward what it believes to be an industry-leading proposal covering wage rates and ros-ters.More at www.nelsonlive.co.nz

Spaceship lands on Hardy St: A space-ship landed on Hardy St last Thursday, stopping many in their tracks. The “spaceship” appeared to have crash-landed on a car parked outside Morri-son St Café on Hardy St, with dried ice even pouring out the windows.Morrison Street Café – which has been rebranded to Morri Street – owner Kay Field says the idea was to help gener-ate interest in the rebrand and was the brainchild of her friend Paul Hargraves. “He organised it for me and it’s had a lot of people stopping and having a look. It’s been great.”She says the spaceship was chosen be-cause they’d heard that a meteorite was predicted to land on earth this week. “So we thought we’d have a bit of fun with it.”

Nelson bars pass underage test: All 22 bars and bottle stores visited by under-age volunteers refused to serve them,

delighting police. Nelson Police Alco-hol Harm Reduction Officer, along with Public Health and Nelson City Council licensing inspectors, conducted a con-trolled alcohol purchase operation in Nelson city to see if they would sell al-cohol to minors.Staff at every business visited asked the two underage volunteers for proof of age when they requested alcohol.Sergeant Mal Drummond says this was the second operation in a row in which no sales had been made to minors.“It’s very encouraging to see that those selling alcohol are taking their responsi-bilities seriously. What was particularly

good on this occasion was the number of staff members who asked for ID and didn’t just ask the volunteers how old they were, or are you 18. We encourage all patrons who appear 25 years and un-der to be asked for I.D”

Firearm incident at Mall: A 34-year-old man appeared in court last week, facing charges in relation to an incident at the Richmond Mall on Wednesday afternoon. The incident involved an imitation firearm and it sparked a swift response from police who were swarming over the mall. At least four police cars and a police dog handler descended on the mall after a concerned member of the public reported seeing a man threaten-ing someone with a firearm in the mall car park at about 11.30am.

A couple of dozen beauty students showed how to cut, spray and perm at NMIT’s hairdressing competition on Friday. The contestants were high school students who also attend various trades academies in Nelson and Marlborough. Blenheim’s Faith Alexandra-Crone won the hair competition and Maia

Jones won the makeup competition. Garin College student Holly Phillips won the “overall look” award. The theme for the competition was rock ‘n’ roll vintage and that meant “pomps” and “victory rolls” – think Rizzo in the movie Grease.Other trades were also out to impress. Carpentry students made stools for

the occasion and cookery students showed off their skills in finger food and mocktails.Hairdressing tutor Zaley Gill says it was a great way to end the third semester. “It was pretty amazing because it was a big team event, with students from different trades, that made it really special.”

Around 40 protesters filled 1903 Square to voice their displeasure at TPP negotiations taking place in the United States. The protest, led by Graeme O’Brien, was much smaller than a similar protest a month ago but the message was the same, urging the government to show what’s in the trade deal with nations around the Pacific rim to the public before signing it. After a speech at the Trafalgar St square, the protest then went to confront Nelson MP Nick Smith at the Nelson Market. They also erected several tents in the square for the night.Graeme says he was happy with how the protest went. “Only had a week to organise things so we were happy with the turnout. We just want it to be out in the open, what’s in the deal?”

The show may no longer be in Nelson, but it was a designer from the home of the World of WearableArt Awards that took home the top prize on Friday night.Nelson designer Peter Wake-man won the “Creative Excel-lence Section: Architecture” section before then taking out the Brancott Estate Supreme Award, at the WOW Awards Show in Wellington last week.In all, three Nelson designs took home prizes, Peter’s “Diva’s Dreamscape”, Doreen Helms and Susan Thurner won the Children’s Section with “For Annie” and Gillian Saunders

finished third in the Man Sec-tion with “One for Sorrow”.But it was Peter’s stunning entry that stole the show. His clever interpretation of the Art Deco-era of design was made of stainless steel, wood and Peter’s trademark fibre-glass. The garment impressed the judges with its exquisite workmanship.Dame Suzie Moncrieff noted that this year’s Supreme WOW Award Winner had a clear artis-tic integrity and responded per-fectly to the brief for the Crea-tive Excellence Section. “Diva’s Dreamscape” really is a stunning piece of art, it has

a strong simplicity that works perfectly from every angle. The use of such hard materials to create a sophisticated garment demonstrates great skill and creative ability.”This is the third time that Peter has entered WOW and the sec-ond time he has won a prize, he was named runner up to the Su-preme Award Winner in 2013 for his pink fibreglass creation “Chica under Glass”.This year’s sell-out production is the competition’s 27th show and featured 107 designs from around the world. The show was founded in Nel-son in 1987.

A tatty-looking cat with a big heart has taken up residence at a Nelson vet clinic, and he’s looking for a new home. The cat, which has lovingly been named “Munchkin” by the staff at Victory Square Veterinary Clinic, was handed into the clinic two weeks ago after someone found him on Vanguard St. Practice manager Brendan Hickman says that ideally the owner will still come forward, but it’s odd that they haven’t had an enquiry as he is such a recognisable cat and it’s a long time to be missing your cat and not ring the vet clinics. “But, there could be an odd reason, or the owners might be away,” he says. “If no one comes forward, it’s a case of trying to find him a home for a little while.” Brendan says “a little while,” because Munchkin, who’s age is unknown, may not have very long to live, due to a squamous cell carcinoma – a form of skin cancer - on his right eye, and another developing on his nose. Brendan says it is common for

white cats to get skin cancer on their faces and often involves having to remove ears or noses.“He’s obviously had surgery at some point to remove his ears and it’s done a good job, but unfortunately he’s still got the growth above his right eye and it’s spreading to other parts of his face. You could do surgery but it would be less of a curative surgery and more of a ‘buying time’ sort of thing. He’ll still be happy – but technically it’s a

wound that won’t heal.”Despite his condition, Munchkin is happy, content and winning the hearts of the vet staff. “The cool thing is he’s just loving life at the moment and cruises around the place,” says Brendan. “He’s a happy character and just loves attention.” If Munchkin is your cat, or if you think you could provide him with a loving home, call the clinic on 546 9646.

Nelson has welcomed each of the past 24 years with brass and jazz, and organisers of the annual Jazz Festival are planning something a bit special for its 25th birthday. The Nelson Jazz Festival sees four days of music from local performers, as well as guests from around the world. It will kick off on New Year’s Day in 2016 with a concert at Fairfield Park in Nelson. That concert is the biggest single event of the festival and sees hundreds of people crowd onto the park, with picnics, chairs and dancing shoes. The festival then moves to several city locations, including free concerts at 1903 Square on Trafalgar St, Morrison Square and performances at a various bars and restaurants. On Sunday, January 3, a special 25th birthday celebration will be held at the Honest Lawyer. The event will be open to the public and even gives them an opportunity to join in.The festival attracts funding from Nelson City and Tasman District councils and the Rata Foundation [formally Canterbury Community Trust]. The festival will be rounded off with another open-air concert at Washbourn Gardens in Richmond.President of the Nelson Jazz Club, Dave North, says it’s an exciting time of year for local jazz musicians. “We work all year on this, we have a great team organising it and for the musicians there’s a lot of rehearsing. But we’re also excited, it’s a fun way to kick off the New Year.”Dave says they’re hoping that the 25th anniversary of the event will be something special for the city. “This would be the longest running jazz festival in the country and one of the best. They have jazz festivals all over the place now, but Nelson is special. The weather, the music, the crowds, it all makes for a great event for the city.”

Have you recently bought a new TV and now realised that the sound is pretty crap? Begg’s Musicworks has the answer – a Yamaha Sound bar.Beggs has the newest product from the “MusicCast family” and it’s an outstanding sound bar that allows you to watch your flash TV with high quality sound. But that’s not all it does. The Yamaha Sound bar also lets you stream

your music from Spotify, Pandora or from your computer, all while controlled from your smart phone or pad.The MusicCast sound bar is also fully compliant with the new 4K HDMI standard, giving you high quality sound to go with your high quality picture.Beggs Musicworks owner Tim Babbage says the sound bar will be a top-seller. “If you’ve got a new TV and realise that the sound is crap, this is a great way to get great sound back without setting up all sorts of speakers in the room.”

Tim says the sound bar retails for $1199. “But I’ve spun a deal with the guys from Yamaha and what we’re going to do is provide a sub-woofer which is usually $499 for $100. You don’t need the sub-woofer but it does give it a kick and for just $100 extra.”MusicCast was introduced just a few months ago and it makes it easy to bring music to every room

in your home wirelessly with playback controlled by a simple app. Start with a MusicCast Sound Bar then add a MusicCast capable AV receiver in your main entertainment room for the ultimate home theatre experience, next add MusicCast Wireless Speakers or Hi-Fi components in other rooms wirelessly. To find out more about the sound bar or any of the MusicCast range, visit Tim and his team at Beggs Musicworks on Hardy St.

Three years ago, Top of the South HOG had a brilliant idea to give back to the community. With an obvious passion for motorcycles, they decided to organise a charity ride, raising vital funds for the continued operation of the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. Organiser John Gray says the idea was to give something back to the community service that is always there for anyone in need, whether they ride a motorcycle and wear patches, or not. Starting at the helicopter hangar in Nelson, with a sausage sizzle supplied by the team at Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, the group then headed out towards the lakes before finishing up at the Belgrove Hotel. This

year the fundraising ride attracted over 70 entries, including representation from many of the local motorcycle clubs such as Top of the South HOG, Lost Breed M.C, the Patriots, Belts and Sprockets M.C, 81 Prospects M.C, Route 6, Red Knights, Brothers in Arms M.C and Independence. John says the total amount raised through the ride was over $2000, which is much appreciated by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter which is currently looking to purchase a new winch. Organisers would like to thank all those who supported the ride on Saturday, including sponsors Wallace Contracting, American Bobbers, Rolling Thunder, First Aid Services, Clark Transport and The Handlebar Company.

Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus, Tuesday, September 15: Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus was thrilled with the success of its 20 year anniversary concert on Sunday, September 20, which attracted huge support from the public. Leading on from it, members also hosted an open night for new members which saw a variety of ages come along for an introduction to barbershop singing.

Habitat for Humanity Restore, Tuesday, September 22: The stores grand opening on Saturday, September 26, was hugely successful, with people lining up to grab bargains from 9am, keeping volunteers busy all day. Manager Becky Wyatt said the store’s first day open went better than expected. Plenty of donations have also been given, although the Restore still needs more volunteers. Anyone interested in lending a helping hand can call the store on 547 4626.

St John Volunteers, Tuesday, September 15: St John had seven people to its information evening on Thursday, September 24, for their Friends of the Emergency Department service at Nelson Hospital. The main aim of the service is to provide comfort, information and non-clinical support to patients, and their families and friends, who are undergoing or awaiting treatment in the Emergency Department. Anyone still interested can call Sarah McCabe or Francine Currie on 546 9445 ext 2.

PETS SERVICE

Budding scientists from schools around the region showed off their projects last week, at the annual Cawthron Science and Technology fair. The fair, which has been running for almost 30 years, is open to secondary school students, and every second year primary school students are invited to take part.Founders Heritage Park hosted this year’s fair, due to the usual Stoke venue being too small. Cristina Armstrong, community educator at the Cawthron Institute says they are attracting more entries every year, and Founders is the perfect “family-friendly” place to hold the event. “This year we had 220 entries, with 160 of those being from primary schools,” she says. “It’s a good way to get kids interested in science and the success of it is partly because the teachers put in so much work.“We’ve had entries from as far away as Motupipi and we’ve also been trying to push technology projects this year, as well as projects with a focus on sustainability.”One project that ticked both those boxes was from nine-year-old Clifton Terrace School pupil Charlie Cuff. The first time entrant was the only student from his school who got through on technology, with his project, “In Hot Water.”Charlie investigated how much water was wasted in his house while waiting for the hot water to reach the taps. He measured how much was wasted by collecting the cold that would normally run down the drain before the water runs hot. He found that, for every metre closer to the tap the hot water cylinder is, 220ml of water is saved each time someone runs the tap and waits for the warm to run through.Charlie says he got the idea when he was thinking about ways to save water. “I got thinking about taps and hot water,” he says. “The testing took me two weeks but I really enjoyed it.”Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on October 14.

Rugby fan caught drink driving on her way to work:

Time of day is irrelevant - it's not compulsory to booze up while

watching the game (& don't know why you would that early in the morning when you have to go to work not long after)!

Good job she got caught. Hopefully a hard learned lesson. Tania Preston Brunell.

I've got no problem with people getting up early and going to bars

etc to watch the footy, but for gods sake, drink coffee, eat pancakes etc. You don't

have to be on the booze to enjoy rugby. Dez Tinee.

Must have been drinking all night and morning with

no food. They know their limits. Heather Waters.

Oh my god, four times over limit, 20km over speed lim-

it! Disgusting! Lisa Harmon.

Wonder what her job is that she can do it in that state?

Graeme O'Brien.

"Spaceship" hits car on Hardy St:Yep, what a crack up. I drove past it this morning

and was wondering what it was. Susan Pearce.

Looks like a giant golf ball hit the car. Ave Redyrts.

Fish sold illegally online:I see whitebait sold online all the time, is that allowed?

Greg N Debbie Harvie.

Can someone remind me why this is a crime? Kieron Welman.

Bunnings staff strike: Lowest wages are just the begin-ning... Doug Barry-Martin.

I think it's just the union trying to justify their organisation. Getting

people to protest to secure their own jobs. Bunnings is great, and they offer way more then most. Titus Miles Kalani.

Well done, stop bad employers chipping away at workers rights!

I have always found the staff lovely and helpful. Good staff are an asset, take care of them. Wendy Ford.

Striking not answer, though. I wasn't going to go through picket

line so kept driving to Mitre 10. They will have to cut staff hours for the loss in busi-ness. Mitre 10 not my usual hardware store, but I will go back there next time now - great garden section. Jo Bishop.

Thanks to everyone who has given so much support to these awesome

Bunnings workers. The heart of the dispute is that Bunnings want to move the hours and days of workers with only two weeks notice. Currently such changes require

mutual agreement. And we're most cer-tainly not doing this to 'justify our own or-ganisation'. The decision to strike is made by members (and only members). We've had a big increase in Union membership, too, since Bunnings initiated their pro-posed changes. Rachel Boyack.

Thanks to the First Union mem-bers and local organiser Rachel for

an awesome two hours together. There was superb support from the public, including a couple of guests who joined the line. This was a great show in solidarity, kinship and courage. This did show the Bunnings bar-gaining team that you do mean business, maybe the Aussies HR team will head back over the ditch. Stand together, be strong. Josh Gardner.

Go the Bunnings workers who are making a stand for themselves and

their families - Kia kaha! Stephanie Mills.

Man arrested in Mall with fake gun:What an idiot, he needs to get a real job. Brenda Kenny.

Was at the mall when this hap-pened, was quite disturbing!

Fleur-Monique Hall.

For just over two years Rodney and Sonya Holda-way have made the hospitality industry their pas-sion. After taking over the Robert Harris café on Trafalgar St, they have already become multiple award winners within the Robert Harris group, competing against 41 other café’s around the coun-try. They started filling their trophy cabinet in their first year with most Improved and were also nominated for rookie of the year and sales growth. In their second year they brought home the trophies for sales growth and coffee passion, but were also nominated for fran-chise of the year. Following on from the coffee passion award includes an up-grade of their coffee machine to one of the latest on the market, which also happens to be used in the World Barista Champi-onships. The new machine is a much appreciated bonus for the Nelson cafe and indicates the passion that Robert Harris has for its coffee, its franchisees and the quality of the brand. During their time as owners of the Nelson cafe, Rod-ney and Sonya have come to love the product they work with, Robert Harris being the most awarded brand in New Zealand, including the 2013-2014 New Zealand Coffee Awards where the brand won a gold medal for its café blend. From more than ten years in the forestry industry, to an apron and cus-

tomer service, Rodney can admit his new profes-sion is a little different, but one both him and Sonya are excelling in. Sonya on the other hand was a stay at home mum to their 4 young children, Amelia 12, Ajay 9, Zak 9 and Archie 7, but had previous hospitality experience. They are now both certified

baristas and take great pride in their work. A great café should offer the perfect combination of coffee, food and hospitality and at Robert Harris Café Nel-son, the whole team works hard to ensure that balance. “It’s a fun, efficient team,” says Sonya. This has included improving their breakfast and lunch op-tions with local, free range eggs and fresh sourdough bread that they cook themselves. While Rodney denies he’s any kind of chef, he does enjoy creating in the kitchen and some of those special recipes have found their

way into the café including his mother’s carrot cake. The café also offers the biggest range of gluten free foods, both sweet and savoury, and is working on a wider variety of dairy free items. The cafe is open seven days a week from 7am and 8am on Sundays with catering also available, whether it’s a business breakfast group in the morning, or food for morn-ing and afternoon tea, lunch or even an office cele-bration. Simply give the café a call to organise what you require on 548 1183.

Passion for coffee leads to national awards

Sonya and Rodney Holdaway won awards for top sales growth and coffee passion at the recent Robert Harris franchise awards.

Locals had a whale of a time at Tahuna Beach on Sunday, but Project Jonah’s interactive session was also teaching them some vital skills.Whale and dolphin strandings are a common occurrence in New Zealand, with Golden Bay being a global hotspot, especially for Pilot Whales.Project Jonah is a national charitable organisation that works to protect marine mammals and last Saturday they began their Marine Mammal Medic training course in Nelson. The one-day course is run throughout the country during summer and teaches volunteers the essential skills needed to keep dolphins and whales alive when they become stranded, as well as keeping themselves safe from exposure and the large mammals they are helping. “Once you complete the training you’ve got a basic understanding of what to do, how to look after those animals and how to keep them alive. We don’t use a lot of expensive technology, [or] expensive equipment, it’s a case of using nature as best we can,” says Project Jonah’s general

manager Daren Grover. Saturday’s course included four hours of theoretical learning before the 19 volunteers were taken down to the beach for some hands-on skills. Once they have completed their training they become part of the Project Jonah regional database, and should a stranding occur in the Nelson/Golden Bay region the organisation is able to send out a single text to its hundreds of volunteers, mobilising as many as possible to the strand site. While their Marine Mammal Medic training courses will be running around the country until April next year, local

volunteer group, Paddlers for Marine Mammal Protection, played an instrumental role in the additional public information day at Tahuna Beach on Sunday. Project Jonah volunteers and members of Paddlers for Marine Mammal Protection provided interactive demonstrations using a life size inflatable whale and dolphin, as well as fund-raising for the charitable organisation. For more information about Project Jonah’s whale rescue course, go to the website at projectjonah.org.nz/medic. A second course will be held in Nelson in February next year.

Eloise Dabinetta, 8, and Tallulah Dabinetta, 10, do their best to keep PJ the inflatable whale alive during the Project Jonah/Paddlers for Marine Mammal Protection public information day on Sunday.

Toy Library celebrates 30 yearsKate Russell

Nelson’s toy library is celebrating its 30th birthday this month, and it is just as popular now as when it first began. The Nelson Community Toy Li-brary began operating in Septem-ber 1985 from a garage at the back of Frampton-Honda motorcycles on Examiner St, with a rent of only 10 cents per month. It soon moved to a front room of a house in Van-guard St, but still a bigger prem-ises was required. With support from the Nelson City Council and fundraising efforts, it moved to a purpose-built facility and its cur-rent home on Grove St, which was opened on March 5, 1988.The original idea was to cater for 50 families with a pool of 200 children - but a month into its operation, 50 people had joined and there were 25 on the waiting list. The toy library has come a long way in its 30 years - they currently have over 100 families and a passionate committee. They are a non-profit organisation and fundraise to cover all their running costs and pur-chase of new toys, and grants are applied for each year.

President Eva Vogt says that they have a "great sense of community," within the organisation. "Many people don't know it's run by vol-unteers - we're all just mums, but love being part of it," she says. The library has one part-time li-brarian, Alicia Marsh, supported by volunteer members and a team of committee members. The com-mittee meets monthly to oversee the running of the library, review fundraising opportunities and dis-cuss the purchase of new toys. Eva says it’s a relaxed get-together and a great way to meet other parents and caregivers in the community, and that they are always on the lookout for new committee members. The toy library offers a large variety of quality toys, dress-ups, puzzles, ride-on's and sports equipment and novelty cake tins, and will be holding a raffle and fun day this December to raise funds. As a special offer to Nelson Weekly readers, the toy library will be offer-ing a 30 per cent discount on mem-berships up until Saturday, October 3. For more information on joining fees and opening hours visit their Fa-cebook page - www.facebook.com/NelsonCommunityToyLibrary.

The South Island Masters Games is back in Nelson and the fun kicked off on Saturday, 26th September. This is a highly anticipated annual festival of sport and sports clubs from all over the region are proud to be hosting it once more. Running for nine days straight, it is a chance for athletes at all levels and

abilities to compete in more than 50 different sports. Most sports have both competitive and social grades so you don’t have to be a top performer or even a current competitor to enter. There are no qualification criteria – athletes don’t need to be nominated or to represent a club. Anyone can enter – as long as they are old enough. Most sports take entries from age 30 or 35 and upwards but the complete sports timetable, found on the website, will be able to tell you exactly how old you need to be to compete. Besides the sporting activities, which usually take place during the day, athletes and their supporters will get an unforgettable party atmosphere thanks to a vibrant social programme. The social functions will cater for all tastes with themed entertainment nights featuring live performances and music. The Games Village will provide a registration centre, The

Shed Bar & Café, daily live music during happy hour, a social hub with themed dance parties, athlete services, a results centre, medal engraving, merchandise sales, media centre physiotherapy/massage and games administration. Those who have come along to watch can also get involved. The Supporters Package is designed for partners, friends, family and other people, who would like to be part of the Games experience but not compete. To enter as a supporter will cost $40 and entitles people to an official accreditation pass, games sports bag, Masters Games handbook and entry to all games social functions. Supporters can enter online or at the Games Village.Check out the timetable below to see which event tickles your fancy and get along to some of the events that will be running around the region. Whatever your taste!

Planning for the most important day of your life just got a whole lot easier. Sunday, October 4 will bring an answer to every bride’s prayers with The Nelson Wedding Show, so get along to Saxton Pa-vilion and plan a day that you and your guests will never forget. The show is all about showcasing Nelson’s local wedding experts and giving the bride and groom a chance to talk one-on-one with the people who can make their day truly special. If you’re looking for motivation to start planning your wedding day, or you’re stuck and need some advice, you’ll find everything you need under one roof for one day only. The annual show is full of fresh and exciting ideas from over 60 exhibitors who are passionate about helping you achieve a dream wedding. This year, The Nelson Wedding Show will be featur-ing a catwalk display of the beautiful bridal wear from New Zealand designer Sophie Voon. Sophie’s gowns feature luxurious fabrics, embroidered silks and laces, and have a vintage feel with a contempo-rary fashion edge. Sophie also donates $100 from each wedding dress to Empower Asia, a charity which runs safe houses across the continent.

From photographers, venue owners, caterers and florists to dressmakers and more, these professionals know all the

trade secrets for pulling off a stun-ning wedding. When you’ve had a good look around the exhibits, take a coffee break and grab some food while you explore your goody bag. Each bride will re-ceive a bag containing gifts from each exhibitor as well as the chance to get themselves one of the major prizes. Thanks to the shows 2015 sponsor, Glen James Jewellery, the first 50 bridal attendees will be presented with a jewellery gift valued at $139, plus, entry into the major door prize

will see one lucky bride receive a $1000 voucher to spend with The Wedding Whisperer. Bring your groom and plenty of questions and enjoy the abundance of inspiration at The Wedding Show 2015. The show will be running from 10am until 4pm on Sunday, October 4, with entry just $10 per person.

After almost twenty years in Australia, Craig Fenemor has returned to New Zea-land. In that time he has worked with, and been trained by, some of the best portrait photographers in Australia, and two of the best wedding photographers in the world. This experience has helped him develop the fun and elegant style that he now brings to Nelson. Focusing on you and your needs, you are assured of a relaxed and enjoyable experience with your mem-ories captured with the minimum of fuss. Fenemor Photography offers everything

from files to albums, full day coverage to time-based op-tions to make sure you get what you want. Tasman district Mayor Richard Kempthorne has praised the “incredible” contribution that volunteer rural fire fighters make to the region, saying they provide a safety net for residents and the economy.Richard was one of the guest speakers at the Waimea Rural Fire Authority awards held at Seifrieds on Saturday night, when the services of Nelson and Tasman’s volunteer rural firefighters across a wide range of duties were recognised. The Waimea Rural Fire Authority has nine rural fire forces throughout the region serviced by 130 volunteers, and on Saturday four of those volunteers and one Rural Fire Force were recognised for their services to rural fire fighting. “They do an awesome job - they are incredible,” Richard says. “We are very fortunate in our region to have such dedicated volunteers.“There is very good collaboration between all the agencies involved but it wouldn’t work without the volunteers. Obviously, they protect the commercial forests which are critical to the region’s economy, but they do much more than that - they attend motor vehicle accidents, medicals and protect rural residents from fires.”Gordon Cowie of the Glen Hira Voluntary Rural Fire Force (VRFF), Appleby’s Doreen Helms, Tasman’s Charles Pickett, and Richard Lelong and the Takaka VRFF received awards at Saturday night’s function.Gordon received the Community Education Award

largely for his work over the last three years initiating the Firesmart programme at Glen Hira and helping promote it in the community. He also received the Training Excellence Award for providing the force with a comprehensive and structured training programme that has helped improve the skills of the volunteers. Doreen received the award for Administration Excellence for playing a key part in the upgrade of Appleby’s station. She successfully applied for grants and managed the upgrade project, all while continuing her secretary role for Appleby. Charles was named Member of the Year for his contribution to the force that includes time running pumps and promoting fire prevention at school events. Charles also has a reputation for enthusiastically volunteering for duties after large fires and maintaining an impressive 100 per cent attendance record at training nights.

Richard received the Significant Contribution Award. Richard was the major instigator of the Tasman VRFF, which was formally registered in August 1998, and was the controller from 1998 to 2005 - he has had a significant input into training and maintenance of equipment. The Health and Safety Excellence Award went to the Upper Takaka VRFF after they implemented a number of policies, including holding quarterly health and safety meetings. The awards featured guest speakers National Rural Fire Officer Kevin O’Connor, Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and Tasman VRFF’s Colin Eggers. Doug Ashford, who retired from the Rural Fire Network last month, presented the awards. The nine Volunteer Rural Fire Forces in Nelson-Tasman are: Glen Hira, Brightwater, Appleby, Ngatimoti, Tasman, Upper Takaka, Wainui Bay, Marahau and St Arnaud.

After 15 years in the real estate industry and repeated recognition as a top performer, you can choose Phil Cooper with confidence. Phil joined Total Realty in June this year and is thrilled to be part of a group that offers a fair commission rate. Phil has worked for national brands over the years that charge twice the rate, but with Total Realty, Phil offers the same level of service without compromising the price achieved for owners, or the number of buyers through their property. For Phil it’s all about helping people, which is something he transfers to his life outside work, too. You may remember the 12 year old boy, Evan, who appeared on Campbell Live with his extended front teeth? As Evan’s neighbour, Phil wrote the letter to the show that then aired the story, resulting in over $100,000 to help the family and others. “I was blown away and felt privileged to help this young man,” says Phil. A rafting and kayaking adventure is being planned by members of the Nelson Canoe Club, and they’re keen for more people to join them. The trip will cater for less experienced, who can travel in the raft, and experienced white-water kayakers. Organiser Bob Gordon says it’s the third trip they’ve done and they’ve all been a lot of fun. “For those who aren’t so experi-enced, it’s a great few days on the river, and it's fully guided with all the safety equipment.”The trip on the Upper Grey River will be held over Labour weekend in late October. Bob says all meals are provided and rafters will camp in “untouched” bush for the one night they’re away.Bob says he already has around 18 paddlers signed up for the trip, but is hoping to encour-age another ten to give it a go and enjoy a “fan-tastic” weekend away.If you’re interested, contact Bob at [email protected], call 548 5382 or visit www.nel-sonkayakers.co.nz. All paddlers must be regis-tered by the start of October.

Pole dancing is coming to Nel-son this Saturday when “moth-ers, accountants, office work-ers and even farmers” from all around the country will be leaving their day jobs behind to strut their stuff in the Pole Stars New Zealand competition.Organiser Katrina Duffield, who teaches pole dancing in her Nelson studio, says the event has attracted a lot of in-terest from competitors. She says pole dancing is gaining popularity in New Zealand and some “truly amazing talent” is coming to Saturday's competi-tion. “Pole performance, dance and fitness has been taking off the world over and it has a huge following in New Zealand. We have some of the most amazing and talented performers in the world and this will be a chance for them to showcase that tal-ent.”Katrina says the competi-tion will include categories for “every type of pole style”, from pole artistry where competitors need to demonstrate artistic talents to the trick combina-tions that focus on the techni-cal skills. It will also feature a Freestyle Battle category where competi-tors will compete against two separate opponents and a “sen-sual” Miss Showgirl. However, Katrina stresses that the competition is a “no nu-dity” show and that the stigma attached to pole dancing is "no longer relevant".“Today, most people are aware

that pole dancing and pole fit-ness are about fun and fitness. You still get a very small num-ber of people who still think you are a stripper, but we can't help what people think.“Sure we wear skimpy outfits when we do it, but you need to have exposed skin to grip the pole. If I wore lots of clothes or leotards, I would fall off.”Katrina says the competition

will be judged by a panel of judges, including winner of Miss Pole Dance Victoria who will also be performing an ex-hibition. The competition is being held at the Playhouse Cafe and The-atre Restaurant at 171 West-dale Rd near Mapua. Tickets cost $30 and can be purchased direct online from Event Finder.

Head and shoulders studio portrait of a man in military uniform. From searching the Auckland War Memo-rial Museum Cenotaph database the man in military uniform is thought to posssibly be Corporal Ernest Gor-don Bennett (Serial No. 43491). This man was the only Bennett on the da-tabase who was a corporal in the New Zealand Artillery during World War One. However, his link to the Nelson region is quite tenuous. There were three other men named Bennett who fought with the New Zealand Artil-lery during World War One and were from Nelson. These men were Arthur James Bennett, George Harold Ben-nett and Harry Bennett. However, none of these men were corporals.Corporal Ernest Gordon Bennett was born on 10 December 1896 in Palmerston North, the son of George Henry Bennettt and Emily Ben-nett. On the Auckland War Memo-rial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Miss Anie Langley, Belgrove, Nelson, New Zealand, G.H. Bennett (father), Ter-race Street, Palmerston North, New Zealand. Before World War One he worked as a bookseller for his father

in Palmerston North. Bennett served during World War One with the 29th Reinforcements New Zealand Field Artillery as a Corporal. He embarked on 13 August 1917 from Wellington, New Zealand for Glasgow, Scotland. Bennett survived the war and was discharged on 1 August 1919, his in-tended address following

For a delicious start to your day, or end to your day, or even something tasty in the middle, Fresh As Bakery will satisfy. Jessie and Justin Reilly have recently taken ownership of what was Ploughmans Bakery and re-branded it Fresh As Bakery. While Jessie has nine years experience creating cakes and other sweet treats, Justin is a master of breads and pies after being a baker for 15 years. Owning their own business has always been a goal and, after seeing the bakery for sale when they moved to Nelson from Christchurch, the only thing to do was to take the chance and buy it. Jessie began her bakery career as a packer before working her way up to the position of head baker, and says she loves the creativity that goes into producing cakes and other sweet items, not to mention the enjoyment people get out of eating them. WEDNESDAY 24 JUNE 2015 PH 03 5282088

By Tim O’ConnellWhile the rest of the South

Island encountered rain, snow

and pestilence it was typical

Tasman sunshine at Kaiteriteri

Beach on Sunday as hundreds

descended on the shoreline for

the Riwaka School Mid-Winter

Festival. Bands, performances and the

standard array of hot and tasty

food made for a welcome way

to spend a winter morning, while

children were entertained by

bouncy castles, mini jeeps and

trains as well as a big dig for

A duck and dip kind of day for winter fest

prizes around the golden sands.

The main attractions of the day

were the mid-winter dip and the

duck race, both of which drew

plenty of entries from locals and

out of towners keen to support

Riwaka School.Fairies, bumblebees and

superheroes were among the

costumes on display as the swim-

mers gathered for the former.Jeanette Clark from Lower

Moutere was found in pre-plunge

contemplation of the icy fate that

awaited her. “Everyone has their bucket list

of things to do, and this is one of

mine,” she said. With the tide in for the 11am

start of the dip there was a very

short run from the shore to the

ocean, leaving the hundred or so

brave folk who entered little time

to chicken out. Admirably, a handful managed

to remain in the water for an

extended period of time to milk

the moment, although it should

be noted that most of these peo-

ple were female. For the rest however, the

sequence of events once sub-

merged was akin to someone

abruptly hitting the rewind button

on a DVD.The duck race was a slightly

more drawn out affair, yet attract-

ed just as much interest as the

earlier event, although it wasn’t

long before the nature of inani-

mate object racing set in and a

good portion of the entered ducks

were soon bobbing listlessly in

the lagoon,Speaking to the Guardian after

an extremely successful day in

the sun, Riwaka School Principal

Fraser Campbell was ecstatic

with the public response to the

event.“There was just a real good

buzz around the place and a real

connection between the commu-

nity and school,” he said. Showing leadership and

immense fortitude, Mr Campbell

took to the water for the dip along

with Deputy Principal Katherine

Sefton, a feat which he says was

“better than coffee”.The Mid-Winter Festival raised

close to $9000 for the school, a

total which is believed to be up on

previous years.

Development boom for region

White water wonderMost of the 250 plus competitors at

the weekend’s Buller Festival were

from out of town, but Nelson boy

Tommy McDowell made sure he

was up there with the best – taking

out the C1 open men’s slalom. The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s

premier white water event and at-tracted a large crowd of out-of-town

competitors – including a former

Olympian from the UK.The festival started off with the

popular boater cross, an event

which sees kayakers race together

down the river. Over the course of

the weekend there was also kayak

and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP

race and the classic cardboard cup,

which involves making a vessel out

of cardboard and tape and taking it

down the river. The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison

is known as the “four river plains”,

with its top spots being used by

hundreds of competitors over the

weekend.Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder

says this was no doubt the biggest

weekend on the Murchison calen-dar, with plenty of money spent in

the town. “I think this year we had a lot of

people coming from further. We

had a lot of international competi-tors and not just professional ath-letes but some just here for a good

social time,” she says. “There was a good long queue eve-rywhere, the Four Square was flat

out, the petrol station was flat out.

I don’t think they’ve sold as much

bread, meat and beer as they did this

weekend.” Tommy McDowell competes in the canoe

slalom at the Buller Festival over the weekend.

Still a volunteer at 94 years oldWhen Arthritis New Zealand needed a local volunteer to help promote its cause and raise some money, the man to put his hand up was a 94 year old World War 2 veteran.Maurice Abrahams is a legend in Nelson. He still plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of ar-thritis.

Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked.Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “commu-nity concierge” washing windows and greeting custom-ers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood pro-motion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”

NZ Post will bring its mail from the North Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-ship – will arrive in Nelson each day at 6am and its noise will have a “noticeable” impact. But the 6am landing is much better than 3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys in and the time they had proposed to land in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they weren’t willing to have such an impact on locals during the middle of the night.“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we would be inundated with calls wondering what was going on,” says Kaye. “After discussions with the operator it was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

rival until 6am, to minimise the effect. The changed schedule will have a significant impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow on effect through the distribution and de-livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-erator has been so willing to co-operate for the benefit of local residents.”The first early morning landing is expected to be on April 7.

Perfect weekend for coastal classicConditions couldn’t have been any better for Saturday’s CHIA Abel Tasman Coast-al Classic, with 292 finishers fotting it from Awaroa Lodge to Marahau along New Zealand’s favourite coastal track.Canterbury’s Chris Dunell lead them all home in an impressive 2hours 33minutes 24seconds after shaking off Simon Mar-don and Sarwan Chand (Greymouth) halfway along the testing journey.Forty percent of the field were women with some very impressive performances. Four were in the top ten finishers overall with Nelson’s Lizzie Wesley-Smith back-ing up last year’s win with another sub three hour performance. Tania McWil-liams (Chch) was also under the ‘magic mark’ and chasing Wesley-Smith home. Third placed Fiona Hayvice (Wtgn) was agonisingly close with her 3.00.14.The ‘Survivors’ group is now down to two, with Chris Gates, 3.16.11, and Colin Rolfe, 3.27.33, no longer having Owen Rouse alongside them as finishers of the event every year since it’s inception in 1994, however, Rouse still contends he leads the trio having spent more time on the course.

Blacksticks back in Nelson

Rainbow Ski Area will remain open for both weeks of the school holidays, as long as the weather and snow play nice. Ski School supervisor Georgie Tudor-Jones says the ski field has a good base of snow and they’re expecting it to last until the end of the school holidays next week. For the holidays, Rainbow is offering a special coaching programme with three hours instruction a day at discounted rates for all primary and secondary school-aged children. “This is a great chance to really get on top of your skiing and boarding for the season, and it’s generally in warmer weather at this time,” says Georgie. “We ran the same programme in the July school holidays and it was real hit

with children, so people will need to make sure they book in.”

As another Special Holiday promotion, the Rainbow Shuttles are offering to take two school-aged children for free with every paid adult on the shuttle bus that runs from the bottom car park. Leave your car at the base and ride in the bus. Rainbow are also looking forward to the Annual Slush cup on the middle weekend, with Saturday October 3 set for the big pool of frozen slush ready to take hardy risk takers on a journey of “temperature change discovery”. Rainbow field manager Jono Hay says it is one of the most entertaining days of the year. “The slush pit provides the human equivalent of snap freezing – for those who fall in.”

Rainbow extends ski season into school holidays
