NOT ONLY THIS…..

Women perform 66% of the world’s work & produce 50% of the food.Statistics say the livelihood of a child’s survival increased by 20% when the mother controlled household income.Women owned businesses comprise upto 38% of all registered small businesses worldwide.

Still....

Compared to Men, Women…. Operate smaller farms,

Have greater overall workload that includes low-productivity activities like fetching water and firewood Have less access to innovation and productive assets and services

Have weaker property rights and tenure security and reduced incentives to invest in their land

Are poorly represented in the leadership of rural organizations, particularly at regional and national level

If employed, are more likely to be in part-time, seasonal & low-paying jobs

Receive lower wages for the same work, even when they have the same experience and qualifications.

Dr. Dashrath Bhuyan in his article titled “Empowerment of Indian Women : A challenge of 21st century” writes:

“Women are being brutalized, commoditized, materialized and subjected to inhuman exploitation and discrimination”

REMEDIES BEYOND PROXIMATE ONES…..

Design programs to facilitate women’s and girls’ access to formal and non-formal education, their skills development and their transition to paid work.

Improve the conditions and quality of jobs to ensure that women are able to maximize their productivity, earn a decent wage and have access to benefits such as maternity leave, sick pay and other forms of social protection. Invest in infrastructure and labor-saving technologies, especially in rural areas, to reduce the time-consuming aspects of women’s and girls’ unpaid domestic work, enabling girls to attend school and women to participate in the labor market or take up self-employment opportunities.

Assist micro enterprise development and self-employment for women in urban and rural areas by improving working conditions and productivity through access to financial resources, business development, skills development programmes and basic infrastructure
